FYI: Homelander deserves the worst but not bad writing, that’s why here I talk about his characterization and other routes of it so much. We are all having fun, if you’re not-that’s completely fine! I like deep characters, dragged, tender scenes. I am aware of the fact that he is awful and problematic but since it’s tumblr, I will not repeat it every time I write a take.

I'm ngl I couldn't even bring myself to read it. Maybe I'm too emotionally attached to Homelander's story in general but damn did this make me feel sad. Don't get me wrong, I actually really like the other characters too. Even if I didn't like them, I loved their complexity. All the actors and the writing really brought it to life.

But then I also hear so much discourse online about Eric Kripke himself? I'm not caught up with that bit but I'd still love to hear your take on this.

So Kripke is the type of a guy who is THIS close to getting it right. The first 2 seasons were flawless, S3 had mixed opinions, I personally loved it. S4 is where it started going downhill. It had the same problem as S5.

Since S1 they created a narrative that the show is indeed a reflection of our reality. But with later seasons it was more of a…low hanging fruit dare I say. S4 was when the right-winged buffoons started noticing that the show is indeed about them. So that was funny. But Kripke realllllly fixated on the Trump allegory.

And I wrote a post about it and I’m happy to link it below. Vought is more Tr*mp than Homelander is. And that’s why I hated the ending a little bit. Because why did they survive. Why did money win. Why did abuse win. Homelander-a symbol-died. Cool. But…it didn’t symbolize anything. It was actually sad. And Kripke praises himself on any confusion he raises in the audience. He gets fixated on getting it right and getting approved. The shows railings grew largely around S3 and the Homelander speech was called out to match Tr*mp’s. And that’s when it alllll went wrong. Unfortunately. Because yes, let’s call out dictators on TV. But God, Kripke. It doesn’t need to ruin the quality of the writing.

I think that Annie/Hughie lost the most writing wise (Sage was disrespected but I am more attachment to them since I watched the show since S2 released). Did they even have any scenes from S4? MM. this guy. My man. I love that he adopted Ryan and I was head-cannoning it before. But there was so many BEAUTIFUL chances, human moments, that they could’ve played into to make this more meaningful. For example both Ryan and Marvin being very vulnerable young men.

The show lost a lot, and god does it make me sad everyday. Put me in the writers room!!!

You're right in that HL wants to see people willingly surround themselves with him. I noticed in the final episode that there were ads for him and his movies plastered all over Times Square; I definitely think he would've made sure he absolutely saturated media with his image. Like, having movie theaters play nothing except his (and maybe Firecracker's and Soldier Boy's old movies if there were any), TV shows featuring him, etc.

Same with the planned amusement park (though I admit I had to look up what a "ticker tape parade" was, since I hadn't heard that term before.)

He just wants a big hug from the world

I wonder who was Homelander’s childhood crush. They played him all this movies where the woman was (very) probably brought down to the role of a romantic interest which would automatically “allow” his brain assume he can like her.

Along that, doctors showed him a bunch of propaganda which must’ve include something about gender roles. “You’re the man John, nation is your lady, you must protect.” Etc

I wonder if it was Private Angel and if seeing Starlight rekindled that feeling

I really did love the response you made to my ask; I would love to see you write more about this idea if you have anything else to say. Like, I could definitely see HL trying to make people obey 50s norms, wanting to return America to its supposed "Golden Age", according to him.

Yes! Golden age is a great way to put it! He’s so into strength, power, golden light. He thrives on being praised and respected for all the hard things he went through. He wants a nation that will be thankful, happy, satisfied to be HIS. To live FOR him. To exist. Not to praise an invisible man in the sky, but a real man who actually took a sacrifice.

Homelander believes that he is more Jesus than Jesus himself. He is not shitting on religion, he just doesn’t care. To him it’s another story in a book and he is a living result of that. He was raised on watching movies of those stories, reading the Bible, comic books. Soldier boy was his real icon. He was his father before he was reveal to actually be one.

Like I wrote before, I feel like he wouldn’t want to pastels of the 50s but the aesthetic that we see being created for Vought Rising. This show will give us an insight into how heroes used to be branded. The same insight Homelander grew on.

His mission would be to protect and support. He doesn’t want a pathetic nation, he wants to be a good father.

His version of beauty is very classic, I got a lot of questions about chubby girls. I genuinely believe that he wouldn’t be into wide hips and bodies that can handle childbirth and supporting the nation etc.

I also feel like his version of baptism would be giving the strongest citizens compound V hahaha

Also, he’d definitely not allow anyone to smoke or drink. He’d ban everything that isn’t natural for human bodies.

I love reading about him and Meave. I don’t really ship them because she deserves to be free, but when I find a good fic set in the early 2000s? I’m gone. I love how much they can explain about why he is how he is. A head canon in Meavelander community is that he doesn’t drink or smoke cause of her addiction.

I am a big fan of Deeplander. Come on. Deep was so smitten! But I am even a bigger fan of Butchlander but only when certain people wrote it. The god of Butchlander is @ficyorick !!!! I will not add anything cause i can’t find the words! Bad Ending is my fav fic EVERRRR

I personally, do prefer him x OCs. I love receiving commissions from people with their Original Characters!!! Or asks with ideas or confusions about “how would it work”. It just gets my brain going! I have some OCs myself that contradict him. It’s just fun having him be smitten for someone whose power is his ONLY weakness. Or someone whose job makes him immediately fall for them which is unusual for him since he always takes his time! I’d love to hear about your OCs or talk some more about mine if you’d like that!!!
