I haven’t posted on this blog in years. I’m writing here again because music - playing it, listening to it, sharing it - is therapeutic for me (hence this blog’s name). That’s a simple truth that I can too often overlook. And confronted with an onslaught of emotion in the aftermath of this presidential election, music helps me stay grounded and connected to the world. 

The first roughly 3 minutes of this Animal Collective song are a frenzy. It’s foggy, it jerks you around, and it’s hard to get your feet on solid ground (the 7/4 time signature contributes to this effect). Then the clouds part, sun shines through, and everything that once felt chaotic has order and grace (including that irregular time signature). It’s an awesome transformation.

This is just a song of course. But it’s helpful for me to remember the power that music has to lift my spirit.

Arthur Beatrice make a triumphant return on the rich Who Returned

We ran out of superlatives to describe Arthur Beatrice a long time ago - crowned the second spot on our best albums of 2014 list, they finish a nearly silent 2015 with the aptly titled Who Returned. It is the first in their collaborations with the London Contemporary Orchestra (Jonny Greenwood, David Byrne, Beck) and sees them sound richer than ever (without losing their magic touch). There’s no typically orchestral-sounds sweeping in like a dozen of violins and what not, but it just adds to the overal value of their sound, which now sees Ella let her hair down and sing like an enchanted sorceress. Who Returned? Arthur Beatrice did, and how.

Composer of the Angry Birds Theme as well as many other video game soundtracks, Ari Pulkkinen of AriTunes Records has released AG Drive Soundtrack, an epic compilation of world famous video game musicians doing exactly what they do best: creating electronic music. Quoted saying that music is “the biggest emotional aspect of any game,” Pulkkinen is the mastermind behind this compilation, which is an interesting venture into a primarily untapped world. How often do you find a bunch of Finnish electronic artists compiled in one soundtrack? Almost never. Give them a listen and and enjoy the finely crafted music of a premier selection of world famous video game musicians.
