Final Thoughts
This course has made me much more aware of the constant change media is going through. When a media source seems obsolete due to a new source, instead of disappearing, it converges into a new role. This has happened with radio, televison, print, cinema, music etc. Communication must go on, but how it is channeled is in different forms that are now converging.

Social Media has forever changed the dynamics of art in how it is created and consumed. It can be shared, talked about, be more widely viewed, the possibilities are endless on a digital platform. For musicians, media convergence has allowed them to gain more exposure and listeners without needing a record label, touring, or other traditional music industry practices. It is the wild wild west (www.) out there for really any artist or business to succeed in the digital world.
Instagram in particular is now becoming a breeding ground for up and coming musicians. There are endless clips of covers, original pieces and collaborations posted on Instagram everyday. It’s often times overwhelming the amount of people posting their content in hopes of getting it out there. Still, numerous incredibly talented musicians are still unknown and not very popular, one of my favorites being guitarist Sam Birchall. My instagram feed is now littered with guitar content from non-mainstream artists. When a guitarist posts a great video, it is seen by a few at first. Then, when it gains enough attention, it is picked up by a larger instagram account, i.e @pickupjazz , @talented-musicians , @guitarsarebetter, etc., and shared to a larger audience. This creates a virtual community of musicians where new ones are found and established in the community. The viewers are also exposed and can interact to different artists. These artists are typically unknown to most, but are respected and inspire those within the community. In a way, the larger Instagram accounts have say of who gets the most exposure, but it is up to the artist to put out their material thats good enough to gain it.
Two prominent artists in this instagram community are Brazilian guitarist Mateus Asato and Japanese guitarist Ichika Nito. They were among the first guitarists to be “established” on Instagram and gain a following based on their incredible playing. As well as original content being posted on Instagram, many remixes and collaborations of previously posted content from other artists show up. This inspired my idea for my final project. I took instagram clips from both artists and remixed them, arranging background instrumentation. This goes to show the endless possiblities media convergence has on music. With countless clips of musicians online there is a never ending source of musical inspiration and collaboration.
Everything is a Remix
As my final project will show, there is little regulation for artists that post their work on social media. However here on tumblr, before a video is posted there is a notice saying “This is my original work, or I have permission to post this.” There is an extensive terms of agreement on posting content on Tumblr and upon reading of it, it states “You retain ownership you have of any intellectual property you post to Tumblr.” So far, most of the posts i’ve put up are of someone else’s work or service while my final project is a remix of original content posted on social media.

Modern Musical Convergence
This song was created thanks in part to media convergence. A web series created and hosted by Kenny Beats showcases a variety of artists in his studio as they come up with a song on the spot. The episode with Zack Fox was hilarious and ended up going viral. His freestyle/song ended up being released as an actual song converging musical media with viral videos, and web series.
Disney, plus a binging habit
Since my cousins got Apple TV for Christmas, and Disney + was included, we’ve been binge watching shows and movies, especially a lot of Star Wars. Never really being a fan of it, I got sucked into the Star Wars universe this past month since all of the movies and television shows are available in one package. This way of watching has made fans out of people who typically wouldnt be inclined to in the first place.
Everything with the topic 'Florida Man' on VICE
Vice used to be a much more interesting and credible media source. Nowadays the stories pale in comparison to its glory days. With that being said, the viral ‘Florida man’ series caters more towards mild media consumers but was still more interesting than anything they created in a while.

It seems there are a variety of ways to self publish your own book nowadays. Ebooks are even easier as you dont need to pay for printing and shipping. While before this, there were many obstacles one had to face in order to publish a book. This gives more opportunity for people to share their writing. More writing can lead to more discussion on a topic and bridge the gap between reader and writer.
Even games where the player can practically do anything are still not enough for fans.
In the realm of fan produced media, gaming mods may not be seen the same as say, fan fiction, but they do allow fans to produce their own content in the games they love. They alter the original art and make it their own. Some game creators promote this such as Bethesda, where mods are now an essential part of a lot of their games. Modders create new stories that can be added, new characters, or change dragons into Thomas the Tank Engine. In online games however, those that have access and the ability to mod have an advantage over others and can break the balance of it, essentially ruining it. The creators of the game usually try and put a stop to this type of modding. This coincides with the dilemma, is media owned by the creator or the audience? For gaming companies, once a game is out there its hard to stop it from being modded or altered, but once it makes its way in affecting others experiences, it should be stopped.

Plastic Love mashups, specifically this Nate Dogg remix, are great examples of how an internet meme is created and how it promotes remix culture. A Youtube algorithm had the song Plastic Love by a relatively unknown artist from Japan, Mariya Takeuchi, put into countless Youtube viewers recommended lists. Despite not being relevant at all, it attracted quite a bit of attention and suddenly gained millions of views. When viewers realized this oddity was happening to each other, it soon became memeable and people started mashing it up with other popular songs such as Despacito and Never Gonna Give you Up. These mashups surprisingly turn out to be hitters. This example contains explicit lyrical content which add to the dichotomy of the mashup.
Modern Musical Convergence
Josh Tillman, aka Father John Misty, is an American folk musician. He put out an album in 2017 entitled “Pure Comedy” that focused on the comedy (or tragedy) of human existence in the modern age as well as the past. This song entitled “Total Entertainment Forever” is a perfect example of how much media convergence affects our lives, and the dystopian future we may be headed towards as technology advances. We are constantly plugged into a media source no matter where we go which may be detrimental to our perceptions of reality.
Apple music is an example of an integration of social media and traditional media. Apple music allows music to be found and shared, and suggests new songs you would like. For students its $5 a month, but the artists however get paid a fraction of a penny for a stream.

As soon as I logged into youtube, a series of reports on the Iran bombing popped up on the home page. A variety of news outlets were lined up with the same story, but with different people commenting on the news. TV media now uses Youtube to get their headlinging stories out and Youtube lets the user pick which news organization they want to listen to. The most polarized news media companies of today are CNN and Fox News. For those that lean either left or right, Youtube provides a way to easily hear both sides of the situation with these side by side, 5 minute takes.
