John and Craig welcome writer and showrunner Tony Gilroy (Andor, Michael Clayton) for an in-depth look at crafting a second season of a hit

I'm sure that this has been posted many times before -- an absolutely fascinating interview with Tony Gilroy.

I'm not at all familiar with this podcast, but it seems to be a very industry-insider type of thing. One of the presenters seems to be the creator/showrunner of another show (The Last of Us? idk).

This ends up being a really deep dive into the creation process behind Andor, and I'm particularly intrigued by what seemed to be big setbacks and obstacles during the making of the show ended up in fact unexpectedly being integral in making Andor such a good show. It was all so improbable.

Also, this:

I had the experience that one always speaks about in an editing room. On every movie I’ve ever been on, there comes a moment where you go, “God, I’d pay $50,000 if I could see my movie for the first time.”

What a thrill that must be!

I think it's safe to assume that I'm going through a fever-dream obsession about Andor. I haven't had a fever-dream obsession in a VERY long time -- and my fever-dream obsessions have always been about music and/or musical artists, so this is weird for me. New territory.

Andor provides so many interpersonal relationships to think about, and I do. I keep coming back to the relationship between Luthen and Kleya... I have this fuzzy, indistinct notion that Kleya is really the motivating force behind Axis, and that ultimately Luthen is nothing without her.

In the video, Epic Sell puts into words what I've been trying to reach in my thoughts: Kleya is the very embodiment of Luthen's guilt about what he was in the Empire and what he did in its service. Kleya is his motivation, and she is his compass. He is indeed nothing without her.

OK, well, surfacing again. Definitely want to keep an eye out for New Delhi composer-producer and vocalist Sijya. She self-produces all her tracks and she plays all the music parts herself. Very impressive! And the results are awesome!

Surfacing briefly to gush about Andor.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that I haven’t been hit this hard since bounty. It changed my momentum, deflected me ever so slightly in a different direction. A rare and precious and ephemeral moment. I’m feeling grateful to everyone involved for bringing it all together.

I’m not a merch person, but I’ve been fantasizing about acquiring a Tony Gilroy action figure, if such a thing existed. I’ve got such a crush on that guy right now.

Very sad to learn of the passing of Harold Budd. He was brilliant and visionary. RIP. 

For a while, back in 1984, I was kind of obsessed with "The Pearl" by Budd & Eno. It'd be hard to overstate how much of a lasting impact that album made on me.

Lene Marie Fossen wanted to stop time 23 years ago. She was only 10 years old when she decided to stop eating and struggled with anorexia the rest of her life. She chose to be open about her disease and is best known for her beautiful and revealing self-portraits. Her soulful portraits of victims of the refugee crisis on the island of Chios in Greece also bear witness of a unique photographer and artist.

Lene Marie’s last wish was that her work should be shared with as many people as possible.

Lene’s work and ambition inspired Susanne Sundfør to collaborate with her when Lene asked, composing the original soundtrack to the film ‘Self Portrait’. It became the last piece of art she created as she passed just after the finalisation of the movie.

‘Self Portrait’ is a Norwegian feature length documentary that tells the story of Lene Marie Fossen, directed by Margreth Olin, Katja Høgset and Espen Wallin, and released in Norway on 17 th January 2020 with international distribution to follow.

Susanne Sundfør’s original soundtrack to ‘Self Portrait’ will be released on 10 th January 2020 through Bella Union. ‘When The Lord’ is the lead track from the ‘Self Portrait’ score, released today, and is the only vocal track from the record.
