Cliff was the second bassist in Metallica! He made his own bass solo, (Anesthesia)--Pulling Teeth. That was a big deal since y'know, there was mostly just guitar solos
To put it short and hopefully not confusing.. He used his bass as a lead melodic instrument, using aggressive guitar effects and also bringing classical music theory into thrash (which you can really tell in Orion) He also used wah pedals and made his bass have that distortion sound to it
That's why so many people are surprised to find out the intro to For Whom The Bell Tolls is actually a bass, not a guitar! (same goes for other songs on Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets)
Sadly, when people are talking about Metallica's bus crash in 1986.. that's the crash that killed Cliff
And that's actually cool you know two people who have the same name!
