This is a hockey sideblog for @squeezetheduck so follows and likes come from there

My two favourite NHL teams are the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers and I live blog games for both teams (yes I’m aware these teams are rivals but I don’t really care so like feel free to follow me if you like either team but if you hate the other you should probably filter the tags). I also cheer for and liveblog Vancouver Goldeneyes games (PWHL).

I occasionally post about the Abbotsford Canucks (ahl) and the Victoria Royals (whl). Sometimes I post about other teams/players as well.

I also make graphic edits/webweaves sometimes

disclaimer that this is not at ALL an expert assessment of things, but here's my quick bullet point list of thoughts & people should definitely comment if i miss anything super important

every single PWHL team is owned by the same man

this man is Mark Walter

Mark Walter is a billionaire (who also owns the LA Dodgers, the LA Lakers, and has minority stakes in other sports teams)

he also has multiple financial ties to private prisons, ICE detention centers, and Palantir which is off topic but i feel the need to add here. he fucking sucks. he is a billionaire and he sucks

this (single-ownership) is not how all sports leagues are run. to look at the men's league, here is a list of current NHL owners. each team is owned by a different person

the general idea is that single ownership prevents teams from advocating for themselves. if somebody has a financial stake in one specific team, they will fight for that team's specific interests

FOR EXAMPLE. if the owner of a team thought that their team had been particularly fucked with in a disorganized and outrageous expansion draft. they would make a fuss, probably

and, in turn, the league would know this & (in my opinion) make their decisions accordingly

bonus point: single-ownership was a point of contention for several potential expansion locations. (see: DC, which broke attendance records, but basically said that they would only host a team if they could own it)

I’m upset about HNIC no longer being on CBC but I do objectively understand why. What I don’t understand is people online who hate CBC. Like CBC is a public broadcaster and in this day and age of subscriptions and capitalism having a free public broadcasting company is so important. What could people possibly have against them existing and broadcasting hockey (and other sports like the Olympics as well as tv shows) for free a couple times a week.

I kinda feel like I should caveat that my general annoyance at everything about the pwhl expansion process does in fact stem from Edmonton not getting a team, and if Edmonton had gotten a team I would be less annoyed because I’m a hypocrite. So ya know take everything I complain about with grain of salt I guess
