Anyway, on this night, Billie and I were watching Grey’s Anatomy and the lead character had just found out that she was pregnant. But she didn’t want to announce it until she told her best friend. And her boyfriend couldn’t understand that. “She’s my person” the pregnant doctor told him, “If I killed someone, she would be who I called to help me hide the body. Until I can tell her something important that’s happened to me, it isn’t completely true.” A violent analogy, sure. But also vivid enough to make the point. After she said this, Billie, without moving her eyes from the screen said in a matter of fact voice, “You’re my person.” I think that was one of the most magical moments of my life. If not just flat out THE most magical moment of my life. Cause, I mean, she didn’t say it to flatter me or make me feel good. She said it like it was the simple truth. And I’m not a person that goes around cherishing things – moments or otherwise – but I’ll cherish that moment all my life. And there’s nothing you can do to stop me.

You know what I really love about Brooklyn 99?

The characters. All of them. They all have so much potential for such great stories and developments, it’s amazing. And each has such a distinct personality and they are all lovable. They’re sometimes jerks to each other but nobody is a “jerk” jerk. They apologize when they mess up (special mention for Jake Peralta).

You know it’s like a show that can be categorised in the same list as Friends, etc. but it’s so so so so so so so so so so so much better. Character-wise, plot-wise, humour-wise, and everything else.

It’s not just a lame sitcom where people crack stupid jokes and do stupid things, but they do and at the end of the day all those stupid things provide a buildup for a great plot.

Like, the lead cast includes TWO Latina actresses (one a bisexual - talk about LGBT representation in women of colour), a Jewish actress, two black men, one of them openly gay and the other with a strong, ‘masculine’ physique and a very sensitive, responsible, and fatherly personality,

and two white men with a very healthy male friendship where they actually like each other and discuss their feelings and are emotionally close without it being regarded as weird.

Like Jake is the ‘cool’ one while Charles is the guy who messes up sometimes and people make fun of him and he really really praises Jake a lot but Jake isn’t an asshole about it. He’s just as loyal and kind and nice to Charles and defends him when someone messes with him and they both always have each others’ backs and it’s so perfect.

They’re literally nothing like your usual white men from TV shows who always have to maintain a physcial distance or act in an appropriate manner and be like “no homo” all the time. They aren’t racist, homophobic, or sexist. They respect women a lot and actually treat them like equals rather than some crazy emotional objects they can manipulate and laugh at. And they aren’t afraid to talk about how they feel and they don’t have any sort of white/male ego or toxic masculinity.

And the women are all such badasses. They’re strong and independent and take their own decisions and never change themselves for anyone. They’re confident and proud and respected.

Everything is perfect.
