Honestly the first time I met him in the game I was both intrigued and terrified of him somewhat. Rizzing MC up any chance he gets, talking dirty and all that and most of all - this still cackles me when I think about it - the tales of the circus making me see him as someone who got cucked (LMAO)
Genuinely I was giggling to my friend as I read through the stories from both Harlequin and Jester's, being jealous of Pierrot and Columbina's "love" and eating her alive and laughing maniacally, I didn't think much of it and just thought "oh he had to sit on the cuck chair thats funny as hell"
But then I kept going back and forth between options, between choices and reading over and over and over the lore. Paying special attention to Columbina's mirror as well as the special cutscene during day two where you enter her name. That's when my opinion of him slowly shift and then a question rises: "what if he's painting himself as a villain?".
I read again, in both Jester and Harlequin's stories, reading through the AMA and questions towards Columbina, I could somewhat feel the truth hidden behind (FROM MY VIEW), Harlequin wasn't controlled by Jester nor was be blinded by jealousy that drove him to eating Columbina, it was the love he had for his 'family' that drove him to the point of despair.
Being the only one left that has enough strength and resolve, knowing that if they don't eat anytime sooner all will die and rot away in their cages, Columbina being the weakest, even if she is taken away she will not survive the cruel hands of the owners. Furthermore, Columbina will possibly suffer even more than them to the point that death is the only way out.
That's why Harlequin did it, even if he knew that if he did, the bond he had between Pierrot would be unsalvageable but yet he had to, if Pierrot will hate him so be it, as long as Pierrot and the others can live. Harlequin would play the villain.
The hour of the diverging path,
Harlequin's play show us the begging Columbina, the tearing Columbina, the Columbina that wanted to live. But that's why its "Harlequin's play", it is told from the perspective of the one whose hands are stained with angel's blood.
But at TT's tent, when we 'talked' with Columbina, we could say the truth (?) hidden behind was far more...gentle. There were no begging, no cries for help, only the gentle and kind Columbina knowing what must be done and does not blame Harlequin, and the Harlequin with tears in his eyes as he laugh at the cold body of their 'angel', as he laugh at Pierrot's hatred towards him.
I can't say for certain what went on through his head but I somewhat relate to the mental toll he has taken, when the situation is so helpless all you can do is laugh. Laugh at the cruel fate, laugh at life, and laugh at your own weakness for not being able to do anything until all is too late.
He played the villain, he saved his family, he saved Pierrot, but he couldn't save the one he "loved", he couldn't save their "angel". All because he was a coward, because he was weak, so he was done with being that. (As per the AMA I read somewhere?)
That's why I can't help but love this little sucker, yes he is annoying, yes he jokes dirty every chance he got, yes I want to punch him in the face HARD to smack the smirk outta him but the gremlin has that side to him that is only seen when you read through the facade. I think bro just need a hug.

I get why people hate him, to each and their own as they say. But it just hurts a little that I can't tell any of my friends that I like Harlequin because of what is said about him.
"He's a r@p1st / He assaults the MC" was one of the comment I read somewhere while scrolling through platforms...
He quite literally leaves you alone and let you go if you openly voice out and you does not like something/doesn't consent it, I think it was shown somewhat during the scene where Pierrot shackles us to our bed and Harlequin came and free us. There are options that lead to Harlequin breaking the locks WITHOUT biting us even once, and the scene with him in his tent are quite literally implied consensual because the MC in that route was FREAKY. The fright MC felt in that scene was because they didn't know about the 'tentacles' that he had and finding out they are monsters (personal opinion).
Beside that I just think people are annoyed at his dirty jokes and stuffs which is honestly fair, I want to punch him for that too but that does not mean being allowed to attack/berate Harlequin fans,
People have their own taste and have their own opinions on characters, our opinions (maybe) are subject to change as more updates are released and who knows, maybe my opinion over Harlequin will also change and I might hate him after,
But for now, let us all just enjoy ourselves and respect each other.

This sounds silly but you don't know how much it frustrates me to go on Pinterest and other platforms see people comment about Pierrot on a clearly devoted Harlequin fanart, "Where's Pierrot?", "Oh Pierrot MC is cheating on you!" Etc, its just weird to comment that. Because I know if the roles are reversed the person who comments "Oh Harlequin, MC is cheating on you with Pierrot!" might just get burned at the stake.
Pierrot fans, Harlequin fans, Jester fans, TT fans, Doctor fans, GreenApple fans yaddy yadda, I don't really care who you are but as long as you respect my favorite character (and dont do weird stuffs)
