There's a group for you 🫵 on Tumblr called Grad Students in the Humanities! We're fairly small so far, but I hope that by reblogging this post and adding tags you know to be in use, we'll build a nice little community :)

I've looked for people to invite, but often I find side blogs with no reference to main, blogs that don't appear to be in use, or blogs that I just can't tell are by humanities grad students. So please, help me out!

Past-midnight-thoughts as I’m thinking forward to the next semester of teaching and to what the purposes of a university education and my course are. For a while I’ve been saying that the purpose of a college education is to “teach critical thinking” in resistance to the businessification of academia and because, for technical skills that can be learned on the job or through self-learning/other experience, “critical thinking” seems like an offering unique to academia. At the same time, I have also been thinking about how that framework of critical thinking as academia’s main offering can be limiting to specific epistemologies (and can still allow me as an instructor to fall into the banking model of education!). I have started thinking more about Lauren Berlant’s notion that we are scholars not to find the answer but to learn to ask a better question. Maybe that’s also what I think academia can offer—tools and practice to learn how to ask a better question, regardless of the epistemological framework.

I encourage shifting the perception of the value of academia (esp in the humanities) more towards the questions than the answers! We (probably) all have been taught to write essays that offer a solution to a problem. Exploratory essays are discouraged, in my experience. There must almost always be a clear importance to the field. This is one way science has a better publishing culture: papers that eliminate answers, or simply try to identify questions, or just note phenomena are OK.

We should value creating questions just as much as having answers! Sometimes I notice things in literature, but don't have particular thoughts about them, or don't have the knowledge to figure out what the right question even is. The academic community should be eager to provide the questions so that we all can strive towards answers—if we choose.

I know there's a stereotype about discord mods, but it is pretty amazing that a post about French dictionaries on the resources page of a French learning group, that conforms to all the relevant rules and includes all the requisite information, could be considered spam and result in me being kicked out of said group.
