Happy Mother's Day weekend! My mother has been my greatest spiritual teacher. My mom and I are no strangers to personal tragedies and triumphs. And through it all my mother and I have learned that nothing has ever happened TO us but all has happened FOR us. To not judge anything as bad or good but to accept life as it is gifted to us- as a lesson to learn from and grow from. With the discovery of my birth mother and assassination of my biological father- With the stories I carry with me of my mom's Austrian Jewish family immigrating here to the United States- I am reminded that my life is a result of not only many cultures and beliefs but of great sacrifice and love. I am forever grateful for the grace and love my mother has shown me and for the hilarious one liners she continues to deliver.
The planet does not need more successful people. The planet desperately needs more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers and lovers of all kind.

Sharing some Happy. From my journey through Colombia. Taken in Puerto Lopez #Colombia #Travel #SayWhat #werelated #MyAdoptionTelenovela
An hour drive from Villavicencio to Puerto Lopez to visit the town where my biological father and mother were from. Meeting my grandmother for the first time on what happens to be- my biological father's birthday. After the assassination of my biological father in 1999, expectedly this day has been a hard one for the family. She knew she would know it was me once she saw my hands. The children have the same hands of her son. #MyAdoptionTelenovela #Journey #travel Jarl Haugedal #colombia

Update: Leaving tomorrow! Back to Colombia to meet for the first time, my blood brother and 2 sisters on my biological father’s side. What a cray cray adventure.
Continuation- We pulled over on the side of the road to give a proper heartfelt greeting.
“After discovering a family member on Facebook, Producer Michael Billy discovered he had a birth mother and blood brother in Villavicencio Colombia. All the way from Jersey City New Jersey- Michael along with his friend and business partner Jarl, decide to go and meet his family for the first time. Jarl translates.”
And then we met- just like that. After a 4 1/2 hour drive to Villavicencio, Ruben asked us to meet him in town by my birth mother’s home. On the way, in local traffic with motorbikes zipping through what seemed to be an early evening rush hour- I turned to my right on the passenger side and we recognized each others face.

Hi!
I uploaded my video’s so people could follow along and catch up with my story. You can also follow #MyAdoptionTelenovela Cute hashtag right?
This Wednesday, I’m Returning to Colombia- the crazy reason why...
In March, you may have followed my posts on going to Colombia and meeting my birth mother and brother for the first time. The experience was profound. To see my face in someone’s face. To learn more about the circumstances around my birth and adoption and to learn that my biological father was murdered by the drug funded militia years after I was born. Information that was- quite honestly and obviously- overwhelming.
On Wednesday, April 6th- Jarl and I are returning to Colombia. When I came home from Colombia two weeks ago I received a message that sounded like the first one I got from Ruben (My Birth Mother’s other son.) The message was from a politician in Colombia- the message explained that their family had researched and confirmed that I was his father’s first born son that was given up for adoption without the family’s knowledge. All perfectly legal, but dramatic none the less. The message explained that the family wanted to at least let me know the truth about my biological father and the family I had come from. As much as this new development seems unbelievable- along with my birth mother walking again after 12 years- it turns out to be absolutely true. I have another brother and two sisters on my biological father’s side and a whole family that is waiting to meet me.
So again, with an open heart and no expectations- we’re off to Colombia to meet my biological father’s side of the family.
We’re celebrating my 8 years sober of alcohol this weekend. To love who I am today is to have the willingness to accept that every single moment I’ve experienced was a gift to get me to the present. To not judge my experiences as bad or good but to see the totality of my story as divine and purposeful.
