This Wednesday, I’m Returning to Colombia- the crazy reason why...
In March, you may have followed my posts on going to Colombia and meeting my birth mother and brother for the first time. The experience was profound. To see my face in someone’s face. To learn more about the circumstances around my birth and adoption and to learn that my biological father was murdered by the drug funded militia years after I was born. Information that was- quite honestly and obviously- overwhelming.
On Wednesday, April 6th- Jarl and I are returning to Colombia. When I came home from Colombia two weeks ago I received a message that sounded like the first one I got from Ruben (My Birth Mother’s other son.) The message was from a politician in Colombia- the message explained that their family had researched and confirmed that I was his father’s first born son that was given up for adoption without the family’s knowledge. All perfectly legal, but dramatic none the less. The message explained that the family wanted to at least let me know the truth about my biological father and the family I had come from. As much as this new development seems unbelievable- along with my birth mother walking again after 12 years- it turns out to be absolutely true. I have another brother and two sisters on my biological father’s side and a whole family that is waiting to meet me.
So again, with an open heart and no expectations- we’re off to Colombia to meet my biological father’s side of the family.
We’re celebrating my 8 years sober of alcohol this weekend. To love who I am today is to have the willingness to accept that every single moment I’ve experienced was a gift to get me to the present. To not judge my experiences as bad or good but to see the totality of my story as divine and purposeful.
