Nicholas’s mother had always called him the product of a whirlwind romance. She’d fallen in love with a young man in Paris and after just a few months together they were married with a child on the way. Everything seemed perfect, storybook even until the young man up and left, disappearing into the night with no note or explanation, leaving his young mother with a small child and no means to care for him. At the prompting of his grandmother, his mother moved them both home and took a job as housemaid in the home of the Fortiers, a local wine mogul who his grandmother worked for as cook.
Nick was raised alongside the Fortier children as he helped his mother and grandmother out around the house. He grew accustom to spending time with the brother and sister, though it was clear there was far more love in his home then theirs. He couldn’t help but develop a crush on the Fortier son and in their teens he found he was not alone. The pair fell for one another, meeting up in secret as the man’s father would not approve. For the first time, Nick allowed himself to dream, inspired by love. He even applied to a few medical schools, he had no idea how he’d pay for it but if they could get away from Xavier Fortier and that house maybe they could find a way.
Unfortunately they were found out, though he wasn’t sure how. Xavier of course could not have his son dating someone of such a low stature but he was sly wanting to keep the whole business discreet. He gave Nicholas an offer: He would pay for his schooling. room and board and all, as long as Nicholas left his son’s life. Nick was shocked, dismayed by the father’s dismissal of his son’s happiness but his grandmother forced him to think about it. He’d always been insecure about his standing, knowing that some day his love may move on to someone richer or from a better family, not the son of their housemaid. Every insecurity fed into his anxiousness over the offer and next thing he knew he was accepting it and with a letter left for the son, hopefully offering some explaining his choice he left for America.
To mend, or more likely hide his broken heart, Nicholas turned his focus on his schooling. If his young love was what he had to give up for the chance to be a doctor, debt free, then he was going to make damn sure it was worth it. With years of schooling under his belt, he found himself at a residency in the ER of New Hanover Medical. It was there he found his true calling, loving the fast pace nature of the ER floor. Once his residency was up, he was lucky enough to get hired on and found himself settling into the town of Amory.
