What is this

I hope I’m not the only one wondering what the fuck is up with the Berserk art lately. Ever since Elfhelm things have gotten real psychedelic, and I mean really. The characters have lost all their edge, they all look like loli parodies of themselves. The contour lines thickened, the eyes got bigger, the lips got smaller and plumper and everything is nice and cute.

My hopes are that this is a stylistic choice for Elfhelm only as to portray the traditional fantasy vibe the place has and to show everyone happy and healing. It could also be a hint at the magic of the place, like everyone has been put under a cutesy happy spell. I really hope this is it. (The gritty looking Guts in the last panels of 355 give me hope but I won’t cheer just yet.)

The shift in the art was starting to get noticeable in Falconia, where Griffith is apparently a Disney princess now but again, it could also be a portrayal of how otherworldly and magical and perfect he seems to be to everyone over there.

I have such a problem with this because this is NOT Berserk. Sure, the art is absolutely breathtaking in every aspect that has to do with background and detail, now more than ever, but if the weird turn on the characters stays it will hurt the story.

You can’t have an epic grimdark such as Berserk with cute art, you just can’t, not unless you want to wreck its seriousness and impact completely. I always praised and admired Miura for his character designs and portrayal, for their uniqueness and for being so true to the story and so different from every manga  out there. For making realistic portrayals of bodies, for making women with normal tits, for drawing distinguishable races and genders, for making everyone their unique person, even the backdrop characters.

No matter what his new ideas for design are, I hope he realizes he can’t draw the finale for such a story like this. At least not the finale it deserves. Every artist changes style after oh so many years, but if you’re a comic artist you can’t afford to make changes that will hurt your story, especially if it relies as heavily on the visuals as Berserk does.

Miura, I really hope you’ve got your shit together and you’re playing us hard with this loli bullshit to unleash the storm on us later. I hope you make me eat my words out and make a fool out of me for even doubting you but please, do not fuck this up.

I’m not gonna say you’re completely wrong, because you’re not, (there are a lot of weird looking panels) but jebus buddy this is incredibly not cutesy. I’d say it’s mostly a stylistic choice, but it could be Miura’s change of art style, or his supposed change to digital drawing instead of traditionally, and that might be a bit of a learning curve to get over, which it looks like he has.

Yes I did say in my post that the grittiness in the last panels gave me hope, especially the one where Farnese’s face isn’t fucked up, but I don’t want to get my hopes up just with the flashbacks (since that’s the only place where we’ve seen the usual darkness) when Casca’s “new” design bothers the fuck out of me, though this one DOES look promising, we can see edge in Guts’ face.

Again, I really hope I just overreacted and he’ll go back to the good ol’. 

As for the digital art thing, going digital doesn’t make characters moe when you don’t want them to be, especially when his other stuff doesn’t seem to suffer from it at all, it is however possible that that’s why his lining is chunkier (but whatever, the lining is the least of my problems).

Yes he was basically nicknamed Vlad Impaleski or whatever. Laugh it up, but say it right.

By the way, Dracula is corruption of another nickname, one carried by his father. The nickname was Drăculea, i.e. The Dragon/The Drake/The Devil (the word drac can mean any of the three because Romanian is like that), and was a reference to his father’s membership in the Order of the Dragon.
