THE LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP
It didnât start off as one. We were like most regular couples. We got to call each other up at 1am to plan a rendevous at the closest 7-11 so we could just hug each other and have cheap ice cream.Â
But now here we are, where even â1amâ isnât the same due to different timezones. We are left to resort to digital hugs and kisses where the only warmth weâd get from it is the burning screen of our mobile devices.Â
No, itâs not the same. Long distance relationships are not easy. It doesnât matter whether youâre in a city 2 hours away or in a country 2 days away by travel. Regardless the distance, it isnât easy.Â
We donât get to have meals together after work anymore. We donât get to watch movies halfway just to fall asleep at the best part together anymore.Â
But even though long distance relationships arenât easy, sometimes the person youâre doing it with can make it easier.
Itâs easier with a person who understands why you had to leave. For reasons such as your careerâwhich ultimately leads to a stable future and with your partner in mind for sure.
Itâs easier with a person who likes to live vicariously through you. When instead of feeling jealous that they canât experience the wonders you are going through, they thrive and feel happy for you.
Itâs easier with a person who shares the same vision as you do. Not in career paths but in life pathsâsomeone who shares the same idea of what fulfilment is.
And even when weâre 9,000 miles apart from each other and Iâm feeling like I could break my credit card to buy a flight ticket home; the idea of being prepared for our future always stops me. I canât get the future I envisioned without the education I am currently learning, across the Atlantic Ocean.Â
And he understands that more than I do. He understands that Iâm only away so I can return to him. And I can return to him with wisdom and knowledge that will make our life together thrive. There is no rush.Â
Sure, at 23, Iâm watching all my friends walk down the aisle and start to feed families of three instead of just two.Â
Photos of weddings and newborns make me think sometimes that that could be me had I not taken this opportunity to go so far away to chase my dreams.
But thatâs exactly what this is. An opportunity to chase my dreams.
A crazy person would give that up just to rush down the aisle with someone who has already promised them that they will wait at the altar for as long as it takes. There is no rush.
He promised. I trust.
I promised. He trusts.
For as long as we share the same vision, goals, and dreams in what our future looks like, itâs not going to be hard to be apart for a couple of years; when we have the rest of our lives waiting for us.
And if youâre reading this, Iâm sorry we canât hold hands when it rains, Iâm sorry I canât get nurse you back to health when youâre sick, Iâm sorry I canât help you tell the hairstylist exactly how to do your hair, Iâm sorry we canât do regular girlfriend/boyfriend things.
But I promise this is only temporary (even though youâre the one that has to keep reminding me this as opposed to the other way round) and when I return we can do mediocre, stereotypical, cliche couple things again.Â
I miss you and I miss you every second we are apart, but so that we can feel normal, hereâs one cliche couple thing to say:
Youâre always in my heart.
Remember, friends, LDR is not impossible. You just have to be with the right person with the right state of mind to make it work. Itâs okay to not be the cliche couple for a while, cos when goals are met, you can be as cliche with your partner for AS LONG as you guys shall live.
Live in positive energy.Â
Love in positive energy.
The future awaits!
âBehaving like a princess is work. Itâs not just about looking beautiful or wearing a crown. Itâs more about how you are inside.â â Julie Andrews

Marry someone who you can watch Disney movies all day with. Marry someone who is proud of you whether you earn ÂŁ5 a week or ÂŁ5,000 a week. Marry someone who you can tell everything to. Marry someone who isnât afraid or embarrassed to hold your hand in public. Marry someone who lets you take over when decorating a cake. Marry someone who you can spend the day in Ikea with without feeling stressed. Marry someone who wraps you up inside their coat in the winter. Marry someone who accepts your fears and phobias. Marry someone who gives you butterflies every time you hear their key in the door. Marry someone who you donât always have to shave your legs for. Marry someone who accepts you all day every day, even when you donât look or feel your best. Marry someone who still puts three sugars in your tea, despite telling them âjust twoâ. Marry someone who doesnât judge you when you eat your body weight in cookies. Marry someone who doesnât make you want to check your phone, because you already know they will reply. Marry someone who waits with you to get on the train. Marry someone who understands that you need to be alone sometimes. Marry someone who gets on well with your parents and isnât uptight about family events. Marry someone who calms you down when you get mad about stupid stuff, and never tells you itâs âonly stupid stuffâ. Marry someone who makes you want to be a better person. Marry someone who makes you laugh. Marry someone who treats you the way you deserve to be treated. Marry someone who you love. Marry your soulmate, your lover, your best friend.
