Stepping into the bookstore, Colton adjusted his glasses as his eyes scanned the rows of shelving. Taking in a deep breath, he basked in the smell of books, one of his favorite scents in the world. Heād come to check out the storeās selection of young adult novels, hoping to find something exciting to choose as his studentsā group read project for the semester.Ā āI hope they have something- Iām sure they do.ā He signed to himself before turning towards a nearby figure. Using his voice, yet still signing simultaneously, he asked,Ā āExcuse me, but you wouldnāt happen to know where Iād find the Young Adult section?ā
āThanks, I think itās literally in me to worry but I will try to pretend I am completely chill right now,ā she laughed slightly.Ā āThen it seems my dignity has been saved,ā Belle smiled back at him.Ā āItās worth a shot, right? Nothing to lose if it doesnāt work.ā She nodded, grateful he was being so nice.Ā āItās just one of those things. Happens to the best of us. Well, thank you for being so sweet, Colton West. Iām Belle. I own the little restaurant. Belleās Place? I could give you a meal on the house.ā
āI can understand that, I get the same feelings myself sometimes. Hey, whatās the old saying? Fake it until you make it, or something along those lines.ā Colton teased, his smile widening.Ā āGood, then Iāve done my duty for the day. Really, I should be thanking you! Hopefully the rice will work for you!ā He nodded as the woman continued speaking, taking in everything she was saying.Ā āThatās very true, and a good thing to remember. You arenāt alone! And, really, itās no trouble at all, Belle. Everyone needs a hand every now and again.ā At the mention of the restaurant, his eyebrows raised.Ā āYou do? Wow! Iāve eaten there many times since moving here, itās delicious! My compliments to the chef! But, you really donāt have to do that! I know times are tough, Iād much rather pay you! Thatās so kind of you to offer, though. If youād like to accompany me over, actually, weāll call it even. I was just considering heading over for lunch!ā
Belle composed herself, she felt embarrassed but she wasnāt going to show it. She gave the guy a grateful smile, nodding slightly as she straighten her jacket.Ā āYes, thank you. Iāll live. Probably⦠more than my phone. I just have a little bit of a bruised ego.ā She looked towards the now soaked phone.Ā āI have insurance. Maybe theyāll save it. All I know is, I canāt live without a phone,ā she gave a little laugh.Ā āThank you for helping me and not making me feel too stupid.ā
Colton returned the womanās smile, doing his best to let her know she had nothing to be embarrassed about.Ā āI wouldnāt worry about it too much if I were you.ā He joked.Ā āIt doesnāt look like anyone else is around, and I donāt know very many people so...No one to tell!ā Colt shrugged with a laugh.Ā āMaybe. But, you could still try putting it in rice overnight. See if that helps anything.ā At least the woman had insurance, if the phone wasnāt salvageable.Ā āItās no problem at all. Like I said, nothing to feel stupid about. Accidents happen. My name is Colton, by the way. Colton West. Whatās yours?ā

BIO
Colton Patrick West was born February 18, 1993 in Charleston, South Carolina. His mother, Catrina Thompson Brown, was a waitress at the local diner. His father, Bradley Brown, was a mechanic at the local auto garage. Being from the South, Coltonās family was always tight-knit and very close, depending on each other, supporting each other, and loving each other. When Colton was two years old, he was diagnosed with meningitis. Due to the high fevers that came with the illness, upon recovery, Colton was rendered deaf.Ā
Although the West family knew Coltonās deafness might present some unique challenges, they loved him none the less. As a family, they began American Sign Language classes, and wanted to enroll Colton in a daycare program at the stateās Deaf School. The school, however, was nearly two hours from where they lived. So, the family instead reached out to other families with Deaf children in the area, to begin getting involved with the community.Ā
Although Colton grew up slightly impoverished, he truly never minded. He was happy, his family was happy, and he honestly felt he had everything he could ever want. For elementary school and 6th grade, he was mainstreamed, attending a hearing school. Then, when he was 12 and in 7th grade, Coltonās parents allowed him to begin attending the Deaf school. During the week, he lived on-campus in a dorm, and was allowed to go home for the weekends. Academically, Colton was always above average, especially when it came to his English classes. Heād always loved to read and write, so when it came time for college, Colton easily chose to major in English Education. He continued to excel all 4 years of college, and graduated on time and with honors.Ā
All his life, Colton had felt just a little different. While others around him began talking about girls, he didnāt feel moved to partake in the conversations. He had no relationships throughout his time in school, despite numerous offerings. The single life didnāt bother him, Colton enjoyed focusing on his academics, and believed that the right opportunity would present itself. And it did, when he went to college. It was there that Colton finally felt secure enough to come out, and it was there he had his first boyfriend. Jamison was a wonderful man, and he helped Colton to explore and discover who he truly was. The pair were together for three years. However, when Jamison graduated a year before Colton, it became clear they simply werenāt meant for each other. The two parted on good terms, and Colton moved back in with his parents after graduation, taking a job at the local high school in his home town.Ā
Four years later, Colton has decided to uproot his life, in search of some adventure. Having taken the time to explore himself, he wanted to explore a little of the world. So, he resigned from his position and decided to travel, visiting six of the seven continents. After getting his fill of travel, Colton decided to settle down at his last stop- Woodcrest. Renting a small cottage, Colton accepted a teaching position at the local school, after obtaining the appropriate certifications to do so.Ā
āWell⦠I⦠I was walking and texting⦠and I tripped. My uh phone, well itās having a lovely bath in there. Could my day get any worse?ā she half laughed, flopping on the side of the wall.Ā
Colton had been enjoying his day, having found an available bench to relax on, and take in the scenery around him. Heād been in Woodcrest for a few months now, and was still amazed by the beauty around him. Everything seemed so different than things in his hometown of Charleston, South Carolina, and having moved to an entirely new continent was still something he couldnāt quite fathom on some days. Colton was very astute, and was used to paying attention to the little details of things going on around him, so of course heād seen the woman trip, though in his haste to help her up heād missed her phone flying into the nearby fountain.Ā āAre you alright?ā He asked, signing and speaking simultaneously before reaching out a hand to help her up.Ā āThat sucks, yes, but maybe thereās hope itās still alright. A lot of these new phones are waterproof, for a few minutes at least. Maybe we can save it.ā Once heād helped her to her feet, Colton moved towards the fountain, extending himself to reach in and retrieve the device.Ā
