                    mary   jane   had   done   her   best   to   stick   with      at   least      one   other   person   at   all   times   since   the   end   of   the   world   began  .      with   an   underlying      fear   of   being   alone      and   an   inability   to   actually      go   through   with      killing   the   dead  ,      she’d   prefer   to   remain      moral   support  .      eyes   stay   shut   tight   until   the   sound   of   shuffling   feat   is   distant   against   the   pavement  ,      and   although   it   feels   like   it   takes   forever  ,      it   allows   mj   time   to   focus   on   her   breathing   and   to      calm   herself   down      significantly  .      she   believes   him   when   he   says   it’s   okay  ,      despite   the   heavy   lump   continuing   to   grow   in   her   throat  .      then   he’s   moving  ,      coat   pulled   out   of   her   grasp   and      she   watches   silently  ,      carefully      as   he   shimmies   himself   out   from   their   hiding   spot  ,      all   while   staying   corpse  -  like   still   herself  .      still   until   he   gives   the      okay  ,      and   then   she’s   using   her   feet   to   push   herself   out   from   under   the   truck  ,      fingers   taking   hold   of   his   outstretched   hand   before   standing   with   eyes   trained   on   the   corpses   shambling   away   from   them   as   she   wipes   pebbles   and      dust      off   of   her  .          ❝   there   could   be      more      of   them------  ?   ❞          statement      drags   on  ,      comes   out   more   like   an      inquisition      than   it   does   an   observation  .      chills   form   up   and   down   her   spine   with   the   distant      moans   and   groans      of   the   very   threat   that   had   forced   them   underneath   the   vehicle   in   the   first   place  .      shoulders   shake   with   the   fleeting   feeling   of      fear  ,      replaced   quickly   with   the   comfort   of   jeff   at   her   side  ,      questioning   her   well  -  being  .      returned   to   her      happy  -  go  -  lucky   demeanor      in   no   time  ,      displeased   expression   turning   to   a   small   smile  .      hand   raises   to   wave   off   his   worry  ,      head   shaking   from   side   to   side   as   she   brushes   off   his   concern .      she      was      okay  ,      she   was   alive  .          ❝   i’m      fine  ,      jeff  .      but   we   ought’a   get   out   of   here   before      those   things      decide   to   turn   back  around  .   ❞
