21 Albums (11/21): Doolittle - Pixies

Around this time last year I had a big Pixies phase. For months I think they were the only thing I listened it. Before that I knew a bit about the Pixies; “Where Is My Mind?” from the end of Fight Club and “Here Comes Your Man” from somebody showing me the chords in high school. For one reason or another I started listening to them on Spotify and was blown away. I knew immediately that they were exactly the kind of band I would love.

There was a huge consideration of which Pixies album to choose: Doolittle or Surfer Rosa? They’re very similar and I don’t have a clear favourite. Surfer Rosa was hugely influential and innovative in a lot of ways. It’s also much rougher around the edges and the themes are much more in your face. Doolittle on the other hand is very clean, the songs are sharper and catchier. There’s more subtlety in the lyrics which makes the whole album more accessible (the band had a tendency to write about very eccentric topics). Is it better than Surfer Rosa? Not necessarily. But when it comes down to it Doolittle is the Pixies album in the same way Nevermind is the Nirvana album.

I love this band. Songs like Debaser have an infectious energy that is just life-affirming. I really think they’re one of the greatest of all time and completely underrated. Go listen to Doolittle. Or Surfer Rosa, they’re both fantastic.
