In this event, we’re digging back to the red stringing and creativity of old that took their own paths from the story that took place in canon!

What Is Red String Retrospective Week?

Red String Retrospective Week is an event created by and for fans of the Magnus Archives to encourage the creation of fanworks that stray from the canon lore of the podcast through debunked theories, no longer relevant speculation, and anything else you might think of! The event will run from October 4th to 10th and will promote all headcanons, writing, and art you create.

Three different prompts will be provided for each day of the event. You don’t have to stick to the prompts or the theories - they’re there as inspiration. If you have an idea and none of the prompts are calling to you, go for it! Any and all content is encouraged.

Gertrude as an old lady with sensible shoes, warm gloves, and the brain of a spymaster. Jon as a scrawny academic out of his depth. Kind of a late submission to the #redstringweek. The prompt and Leitner made me do it.

Oh god I just had a dark thought.

Gertrude said Avatars tend to burn out after their Rituals fail, and we’ve seen examples of this: Tom Haan letting himself get shot with a bolt gun, Michael loosing his identity and getting supplanted, Breekon making one last delivery before fading away…

Jon is an Avatar. The Watcher’s Crown is due sometime within a year.

What if they do stop it? What if that’s the season four finale? They stop the Watcher’s Crown, and Jon survives.

And then we get season five. And an Avatar whose Ritual has failed, clinging to scraps of who he was and his former purpose.

Slowly burning out.

if annabelle’s using the camera then she doesn’t have spooky powers and also is potentially not directly under the influence of the web (for a given value of ‘web’, ofc, as simply an aspect of ‘all fear’, not necessarily a separate entity, u get it u kno the drill)

I’m not certain that the camera cuts Annabelle off from the web. Logically it should, but there are definitely implications that it doesn’t.

I am desperate to know what Annabelle The Person wants as well though, because she clearly has her own agenda separate to that of her patron. Six episodes to go and we still have no idea.

that’s why i said potentially. i really do hope she is, and it does make logical sense that it’s at least weakened, but yeah i get the feeling that’s not what jonny intends………. but i still want it tho.

Strong agree with this. Whether or not that’s what happens, it would make such a good development, and there’s enough foreshadowing/parallels to make it possible. Consider that we don’t know what Annabelle’s been doing this whole time, she’s been trying very hard to throw the Eye off her trail, but this aside, it’s wholly open. Consider also that there is at least one interesting parallel between her and Jon: both got their current powers through involuntary participation in a highly traumatic ritual (compared to a lot of other avatars who came by their powers at worst through accident, and at best through an active process of seeking).

Here some things about Jon that might also be relevant for Annabelle: he’s a character who notably serves the Eye (or rather, the more eyelike parts of the soup, if we want to be accurate) but is not a fan of his attachment to it - this means that while he has done standard avatar-things like hunting for victims and engaging in the characteristic strategies and approaches of his patron (see Melanie: “Pull your head out of your arse, stop trying to use it as a bloody antenna, and actually try thinking!” – I want to argue Annabelle’s acts of manipulation fall under this: just a cognitive style of doing things that she’s used to because of her status - which in a sunnier AU would have the potential to be hilarious just because it is so inconvenient, and yes, of course she’s going to be morally grey, she presumably feeds people to spiders, but that doesn’t mean she’s worse or scarier than the other avatars for doing it), but ultimately is trying very hard to not pursue the path laid out for him and is working against the fears.

Also, speaking of fear soup, I really like the idea of an aggressively deconstructed reveal where it’s going to matter that there’s actually a lot of overlap between what we’re used to thinking of as the Eye/Web.

Also, this may not be news to many people, but just casually pointing out that if Simon Fairchild attempted his ritual in 1853, that puts him within the lifetime of Jonah Magnus; and in fact, since these things seem to take an awful lot of time to plan and prepare, it's likely he could be significantly older than Jonah Magnus.

Which means it's not out of the question that Jonah Magnus could still be alive - especially if he became an a avatar.

Simon Fairchild is old as fuck. Didn't he say he studied under Tintoretto? 16th century Italian Renaissance painter Tintoretto? That would put him well over a century before Maxwell Raynor even.

It's been hinted at that there are immortal Beholding beings (the thing in Alexandria), although I prefer the bodyhopping idea personally, since the "transferring knowledge/being" aspect seems fitting, and Maxwell Raynor does it this way also.

I assume the difference between the two (three?) is that immortality is a feature for the Vast, because a vast lifespan makes things look more insignificant as Simon puts it.

Meanwhile Raynor came up with that black water ritual to become immortal. And since we learned that you can just come up with something like that (e.g. to create a black sun), it would be possible for Jonah Magnus to have figured something out too, not necessarily the bodyhopping thing.

1.) Thank you, that name was said with such an accent that I didn't even know how to go about spelling to try to google who that was. Yes, that would put him centuries before Jonah Magnus.

2.) I've had many, many thoughts about the thing in Alexandria. Gertrude says, "Perhaps it, too, was once an Archivist." But after some time I thought... she doesn't really know though, does she? I mean, it could be a hint from Jonny that's what happens to avatars if they live that long, or perhaps it was just a "monster"; something like the Distortion or Nikola that was never human to begin with. We don't really know.

3.) My personal theory is that each Power has their own unique way of extending their avatar's life, whether that's just not dying, body hopping, mind info dump, whatever. But again, we don't really know.

Conclusion: *exaggerated shrug*

I assumed the Alexandria thing was an Archivist at some point, since in MAG 92 Elias was like "Don't worry, Jon, you won't end up like that thing in Alexandria." But of course I hardly believe everything Elias says.

What he says is, “You’re worried you’ll turn into that thing in Alexandria; don’t be.” Which, well, doesn’t mean he couldn’t turn into that thing in Alexandria, but also could mean it’s a totally unrelated Beholding monster.

(I love seeing avatars who pre-date Smirke’s system; it really highlights how artificial it is. I’d love to see a statement from Jonah Magnus or Smirke about meeting Simon for the first time, under whatever name.)

The Magnus Archive is consciously leaning into the common horror trope of the Lone Witness, considering that a lot of events are witnessed by one person, and then recorded by our very own Archivist. This has for the longest time led me to believe that Jon, the Archivist, is the final embodiment of that trope. The Witness of Witnesses, the one whose long and winding Statement makes up the lens through which we Behold the world.

But what if it’s Martin who’s the Lone Witness in the end?

Who better to stand there, at the end of everything, than the one with ties to Forsaken and Beholding both? The Lone Witness in more than just title.

Do you think the Darkness is its own Aspect or is it part of the Hunt? Are they collaborating?

I don’t think that the Darkness is part of the Hunter.  I do think it’s probably either an entity in its own right, with Mr Pitch being the main avatar known (Maxwell Rayner seems to have fit into more of an Elias role), though contact with Mr Pitch is less common than contact with the avatars of other beings, as the People’s Church is very secluded in that way, and seems to exist in a pocket dimension of some sort, in the strange stone cathedral that only exists when you can’t see it.

The question is, is all this the attributes of a single entity, or are they attributable to something larger?  I would argue that the People’s Church never felt wild or hungry enough to belong to the Hunter.  It’s small and controlling and governed by fear.  During ‘Growing Dark’ (again, that episode is a treasure trove of lore), new People’s Church convert Natalie stated that her roommate Kathy was worshipping their god with her fear.  That’s not the Hunter’s MO.

That’s the MO of the Stranger.

I think that the Darkness, Mr Pitch, and the People’s Church are all another extension of the Stranger.  Furthermore, I get the feeling that the People’s Church was the driving force behind the last attempt at the Unknowing, 300 years ago.  Natalie mentions that 300 years is a long time to wait, but that the worshippers of the People’s Church would be taken away from the world and delivered to something better soon.  This happened in early 2015.  As a few people have mentioned in another post, the last total solar eclipse that hit London occurred in 1715.  If the People’s Church were in charge of the last Unknowing, then it makes sense that it would coincide with an eclipse.

But whatever they did, it seems to have failed.  More than that, almost exactly 100 years after that attempt at the Unknowing, Jonah Magnus founded his Institute in 1818.  So either the Stranger had power very briefly but lost it, or never managed to secure it at all, leaving the Stranger weakened and the Beholding able to establish a much firmer hold in the world.  

But the People’s Church seem more or less disbanded.  As far as we know, Maxwell Rayner is now dead.  The rest of congregation is leaderless, and we don’t know what sort of contact they have with Mr Pitch.  So it would be easy for Nichola Orsinov to take over and start directing them as well, coopting Mr Pitch into her efforts.  

It makes sense that, with something as huge as the Unknowing is supposed to be (so big that the congregation of the People’s Church believed they would be taken away to escape it), all the disparate parts of the Stranger would start to be pulled together into a more unified front.

I’d say Darkness and Stranger were separate entities, in so far as our current understanding of the Powers goes, admittedly mostly because they had different corridors in Old Passages. There are fourteen corridors, and those described seem to be referring to Enclosure, Vast, Darkness, Butcher, Web, Stranger, and Desolation (though the first and latter three are described at different sections so it’s possible that Stranger and Darkness could be sharing a corridor? but the Darkness corridor is too dark for their torches so I’m not sure how one would see the Stranger in it (though I guess the Powers don’t really care for physics and that), and it would leave a gap in my nice list of fourteen Powers).

A bit less connected, but what are your thoughts on the screaming heard from the Hither Green Dissenters’ Chapel the night Gertrude died? I guess it could have been happy screaming, but I had been wondering if perhaps she had allied herself with them in some way, perhaps to destroy the Archives, as she seemed to be big on that. Perhaps they with their closed-eye-ness were helping to conceal her from Elias? But there does appear to be a connection there, and with the argument here for People’s Church being pro-Unknowing seeming sound enough to me, I’m wondering about the nature of it, as I had been assuming Gertrude was anti-Unknowing. But yeah, possibly just happy screaming at the passing of an Archivist?

Oooo!  List of powers!  It’s a little different than the one I’ve been rolling with, being:

Beholding (confirmed)

Web (confirmed-ish, Jonny stated it as a separate power in the Christmas live stream thing)

Vast (confirmed)

Enclosure (neither confirmed nor addressed very often)

There’s also the being of Random Shit that seems to have been featured in ‘Thrown Away’ and ‘Lost and Found’, but I really have no good definition for it, aside from that it really seems to like random junk belonging to humans.  The Packrat?  The Hoarder?

That’s the list so far for me.  

As for the screaming, I’m not certain.  One thing that season 1 really stressed that hasn’t come up in a while is that Gertrude’s death was a BIG DEAL in the supernatural world at large.  The Hithergreen Dissenters’ chapel started screaming.  The Desolation’s burn site for her in the woods had been destroyed.  The End may well have been sending Antonio Blake premonitions about it.  Gertrude was important.  The Archivist is important.  As much of a nuisance as Jon’s being treated as by the other beings, they do respond to him.  They often feel good telling him their stories.  So I think that it was likely the End was trying to save Gertrude.  The Desolation might have wanted her dead, or was already working with the Stranger at that point.

See, my theory is that the Archivist is a vital part of the Unknowing.  Gertrude’s death actually delayed that event because there were so many plans in motion regarding her.  At that point, I think that the People’s Church was in charge of the Unknowing, working with the Lightless Flame, but when she died things got thrown dramatically out of whack, and the Circus had to be called in to take over the plan.

Did Elias know any of that?  Likely.  He was acting primarily to protect the Institute, of course, but may have justified murdering the Archivist to himself by the thought that without her the Stranger would have to scramble a different plan.  But of course he also screwed himself over, because the Stranger might have had to change plans, but so did the Beholding.  It had to bring in a new, untested, inexperienced Archivist.  Both the Stranger and the Beholding might well be on the back foot right now.  The Beholding due to the new avatar it’s having to get used to, the Stranger because the People’s Church detonated.

You guys know I’m not the best at meta, I’m just the girl who screams AU at the void, but I freaking love the Web getting less and less subtle about its involvement this season; like we know it was always there from the beginning, of course - helped Jon for the Infestation, gave him the lighter, covered the remnants of the worms in the tunnels after the attack… But now they’re like “let’s wake the Archivist up!” and “Let’s give him statements!” it’s so pro-active of them, and I’m so CURIOUS about what it entails! 

Is it, as the obvious answer should be, a Web/Beholding Alliance? Is it a Web/Beholding/Lonely alliance? Like, are Lukas and the Spiders playing more or less the same game, pulling at different but complementary strings to stop that Potential 15th Fear rising/to stop another Ritual that’s in motion?

Or, on the contrary, are the Web and Lonely not doing the same thing at all and the Web is actively moving things forwards to stop Lukas? Peter seemed to think the Archivist wouldn’t wake up - or, at least, that’s what he told Martin, maybe it was just manipulation, but I dunno, for the sake of the argument, let’s pretend he was at least a bit honest there - and it IS a setback on his plans for Jon to be awake and pursuing Martin, because Martin’s in LOVE and can’t cut Jon out off his life easily. So, the Web sending Oliver would be a pretty big “fuck you, Peter, we ship jon/martin, go back to Elias and leave them alone” 

Is the Web genuinely into helping Jon not only as a Beholding thing but as a “you were almost ours once” way? Is it just helping Jon because web!Martin loves Jon and can’t directly help him right now so little spiders work hard to make up for it?

Also, what is the Web’s big picture here? Is it just stopping a ritual? Stopping a new fear from rising? Reinforcing an alliance with the Beholding because their ritual is the closest to theirs and they want to be pulled along for the ride? 

I AM SO INVESTED AND CURIOUS. I can’t wait to have more.

(of course, it might also just be the Web being lovingly protective of its Dear Beholding’s favourite son) (yes. yes. i like that incomprehensible and weird ship. sue me. i blame fanfic writers.)

Event Prompts

Since last week we’ve been reblogging theories on the event page. If you’ve been having trouble thinking of ideas, we suggest you take a look at that and see what catches your eye.

So in “Left Hanging” Jon declared he doesn’t want to ever meet Simon Fairchild, thus cursing himself to meet Simon Fairchild.

The Vast is the opposite of the Buried.

The Buried is what’s got Daisy in that coffin, trapped so tightly she can’t even die.

…is Basira gonna go ask a Fairchild for help with he coffin?

We’ll see what the rules of the apocalypse are like and I’m sure I’ll be happy with whatever they do. But I am quietly hoping for a situation where avatars have absolutely zero protection or perks, the Entities don’t recognize them as separate from the mass of humanity, and any special powers they have are so dwarfed by the scale of the Entities that they’re functionally on the same level as everyone else.

Consider the following:

Jonah Magnus, who thought he would be a king in this new world, is as much a victim of his hubris as anyone else and is left alone with the fear of death that drove him to this in the first place.

Jon, who has been struggling with the idea of not being human, finds that as far as the Entities are concerned he’s as human as anyone else - a revelation that would be much more comforting if not for what that means for his safety.
