BELLARKE + CINEMATOGRAPHY
An anon asked me to use my knowledge from film studies class to help explain why Bellamy and Clarkeâs relationship has intentional romantic undertones.

First, I am going to explain some very typical Bellarke cinematography and then I will choose some of my favorite scenes and use my knowledge to explain why they have intensional romantic tones.
BELLARKE-CINEMATOGRAPHY: Close ups
Close ups in filmmaking are more important than most people think. It is not just another shot, because the purpose of close ups is to highlight important emotions and/or details in the story.
Here are a couple of Bellamy and Clarke close-ups:
We are all convinced that they were flirting in this scene, and that isnât weird. Why? Because of the close ups - because the scene was shot like this intentionally to highlight their facial expressions and emotions as much (if not more) than the conversation that theyâre having. We are told as viewers through this shot to pay attention to their faces - not the conversation.
Without knowing this for a fact, I will dare to say that Bellamy and Clarke are two characters in The 100 who have had the most close ups in their scenes together over the three seasons, and that is really important. Close ups are not there for fun - theyâre there to show us something crucial and make us pay attention to it.
Something I canât help but squeal about is the fact that every time Bellamy and Clarke show physical affection towards each other, it is shot as a close up. For example this ^^. They decided to shoot the scene like that because they want us to pay attention to Clarkeâs hand searching for Bellamyâs and how it trembles until he holds it. If their physical affection was merely platonic, they wouldnât highlight it like this, because it wouldnât matter to the story or relationship development.
THEIR PHYSICAL AFFECTION IS CRUCIAL TO THE RELATIONSHIP AND OVERALL STORY.

The fact that the producers have chosen to shoot so much of Bellarkeâs relationship and interactions in close up only tells us that they want us to notice the emotions in the relationship, the physical affection etc. Weâre not imagining things, but we are seeing them because they want us to see it.
