Stamps MFA alum Mia Cinelli is going viral with her most recent design project, a blanket called The Weight. In the wake of a family member’s death, Mia sought to design a therapeutic object. She researched the use of stress-relieving weighted blankets in occupational therapy practices, and was moved by the simple but powerful comfort that came from getting a hug. Hybridizing these two ideas she created “The Weight” – a blanket with hands to hug and hold.

Occupational therapy has become one of the most common and widely used techniques in psychiatry. It is essential in a 21st century working environment to help reintegrate people back into their jobs and lives.
Occupational therapy provides support to people whose health prevents them from doing the activities that matter to them. An occupational therapist can identify strengths and difficulties you may have in everyday life, such as dressing or getting to the shops, and will help you work out practical solutions.
An occupational therapist can work with you to identify goals that can help you maintain, regain or improve your independence by using different techniques, changing your environment and using new equipment.
Occupational therapy is used when an individual is having difficulty with everyday tasks. This could be because of a: medical condition – for example, rheumatoid arthritis learning disability mental health condition – for example, bipolar disorder Occupational therapists work with people of all ages and can look at all aspects of daily life, from the home to the school or workplace.
After identifying the difficulties experienced by the individual with everyday tasks, occupational therapists can help by either: practising the activity in manageable stages teaching a different way to complete the activity recommending changes that will make the activity easier providing devices that make activities easier
For example, after a hip replacement someone may find it difficult to get in and out of the bath. Grab rails could be fitted in the bathroom to make this easier.
Someone with rheumatoid arthritis (a condition that causes pain and swelling in the joints) may find it hard to lift small objects. Special equipment, such as a wide-handled vegetable peeler, may be made available to make tasks easier.

[B]lindness, like all things, is on a spectrum. Most characters depicted in fiction are completely blind – they see nothing. In reality, only 10% or so of blind individuals are completely blind. The other 90% fall on a spectrum. Depending on the disorder or trauma that caused the blindness, a person could see in a thousand different ways. So many people don’t realize this, though. I actually get accused of faking my blindness because I can read large print text on my phone. I often wonder if this is because the media only portrays complete blindness as ‘blind’ and rarely acknowledges the other 90% who have some vision.
