is his exhaustion so apparent? the dark circles under eyes exposing the obvious truth —— long hours bleeding between mere blinks of sleep, patients in, under his scalpel, & out all blurring together. rotti's up & coming top surgeon worked till mind threatens to melt; he can't help wondering if it's all some test of grit, how far he can be pushed before losing it.

his feet undeniably drag as he follows marni's lead, clinging to her hand: a guiding light in the darkness. any hopes of obscuring his state quickly dashed, as she sees through him with ease. nathan's voice is soft, punctuated with that same exhaustion, even as he tries a smile, “ i'll be alright. i'm sure a nap isn't what you had in mind, pulling me in here. ” smile eases, hands finding her waist to keep her close to him. “ i've missed you. i'm sorry i've been so busy lately. . . ”

ㅤ𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐭𝐮𝐭, the tempt to scold sitting on the tip of her tongue. refraining as a hand comes instead to pet at his arm, a silent acknowledgement of his hard work. it's practically tangible, how his work hangs off of him like a drenched coat. ❝ a nap is perfect . . . ❞ words leave soft, the curve of her lips pressed to his cheek in a brief kiss. body retreats but never from his touch, fingertips brushing at the stain left by lipstick. ❝ look at you, oh, my love . . . what is he doing to you? ❞

the sigh drifts as noses nuzzle in a moments affection. honeyed gaze lingering on his features in worry. every second is cherished. ❝ we could be sitting here in silence and i would still be content. i've missed you, too . . . ❞ lips pull thin, weighing her words for a long moment. ❝ let me talk to him. there has to be 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐨. ❞

Haven't seen any post on here about it yet, so: there is another one day strike tomorrow (Thursday the 7th), as well as a call to boycott the oscar's on the 10th. Much like the super bowl and christmas, israel is planning to attack Gaza when they expect americans to be distracted, on top of having a history of targeting Palestine during Ramadan.

chemical smell burns as he cleans, the sting of it a reminder of needed distraction —— though memories are never far. flashes of blood, the beeps of a flatline, the images bleeding through his incessant cleaning. looking down at chapped hands half expecting to still see the red he's tried to scrub away. reliving those moments, over & over again, mind racing with the what-ifs & the almosts, flashing behind too-tired eyes with every heavy blink.

her paled skin serves as a cruel reminder of what was almost her fate at his hands, her life's red string poised between his taut scissors. i almost killed you.

gaze fixes on a notch of wood as poisonous thoughts wander; an imperfection he can't seem to expunge, no matter how he works knuckles to the bone. his chest aches at the sight of it, at what it represents. what was supposed to be their happy ever after, free from the pain & suffering that their had previous lives wrought, to become marred with the black of blood's stain, at the fault of his cure.

the guilt is unbearable, worsening every time he sees the state he's left her in: failed savior's cross to bear. the mess he's made of their lives —— the mess he can't seem to clean up, even as skin cracks & peels.

unfamiliar creak of stairs draws attention away from the suds & sorrow before him, concern immediately blooming. “ marni? ” nathan calls, beckoning in a softer tone as he rounds the corner. heart sinks as he sees her, clinging to the bannister with exhaustion hanging off bones. “ . . . marni, ” breathed out on the bough of a soft sigh, traversing up the staircase to greet her, his hands carefully finding her arms. silently assessing for any damage done. “ i told you you should be in bed, resting. if you needed something, i would've gotten it for you, honey. ”

ㅤ𝐞𝐱𝐡𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧, heavy & thick over rounded shoulders. his touch is warm in contrast : she cherishes the feel against chilled skin. death walks by her side but refuses to take her hand once more ― offering the chance of recovery. there is a tremble to the hand that settles over the wound done up in stitches, ache radiating it's own warmth. senses burn at the scent of chemicals worn on nathan in a perfume of desperation. body does not stray, rather it sinks ― solace sought in once steady hands. i'm alright [ . . . ] it is thought on repeat yet never once said. rubied poison flows in rivers, uncured but not unsaved. nathan's voice is a saving grace, chiming through the weight of gravity pulling her from the unfocus. i almost died. it takes no investigation to recognize the torture of her love : gaze settled on his hands. they were the last thing she looked at, how red they were. you still see it, don't you? the blood. vague is the shake of her head, skull kept tipped hands loosening in their strangle at the bannister. instead they find his, fingertips brushing over the texture of overworked hands. ❝ i know, i know . . . ❞ words drift, quiet, too tired to build themselves up.

dark honeyed gaze drags upwards, meeting his at last : a silent request. help me. their matched gazes do not last before marni's descends once more, once more settling on the final step of the staircase. hands squeeze at his, a quiet & dull evidence of hope. ❝ . . . if i can reach it, then in my mind it's telling me that 𝐢'𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭. ❞ we'll be alright.
