NYPD Officer Saunders has heard the stories plenty of times. How Uncle Danny had been trapped behind the German line by a blizzard, a HYDRA blockade pinning half the battalion for months. How Captain America had fought through the blockade, single-handedly saving over a thousand men, including Uncle Danny (although he did lose a leg in the process). How Aunt Peggy had also fought alongside Captain America, altering the course of the war and carrying on his legacy through her work at the S.S.R. and in the foundation of S.H.I.E.L.D. How Aunt Peggy had actually heard Captain America’s last words before he crashed a HYDRA ship into the Arctic, saving New York City from destruction.

They were stories that Officer Saunders had grown up with, stories of the bravery and selflessness and heroism of Steve Rogers. But he didn’t believe those stories, not really at least. He always thought his aunt and uncle had a penchant for exaggeration. It wasn’t until he came face-to-face with the legend himself in the Battle of New York that he realized.

The stories didn’t do Steve Rogers justice.
