âHey, thatâs better than I ever did in school. Notes is a big deal. Totally means they were trying,â Brady laughed, shrugging innocently. As far as she was concerned, that was probably all a teacher could ask of a student. If they werenât being disruptive, that had to count for a lot. Being a teacher wasnât something Brady could even fathom doing with her life and she had a level of respect for Jamie that she didnât hold for many other people. If she could tolerate cranky teenagers all day and somehow get them to learn even just a small something, it was a near miracle. âAw, yeah, you bet. IâŠwell. Iâm sure Iâll getâŠmaybe a little time to go see some sights?â she mused, biting down at her lip. Her time was limited no matter where she was, but especially so when she was overseas at a tournament. The games came quick and her practice time with her team was short, leaving her with little extra time to actually go out and explore the exotic locales she often found herself in. âBut, yeah, yeah. No, yeah. Totally. Wonât work myself into the ground, scoutâs honor. Iâll take at least one break a day for like ten minutes to just breathe. My job is fun anyway, so itâs like. I canât complain, yâknow?â
They were trying. Sometimes, at least. She knew she wasnât as riveting as the latest gossip or Instagram trend, or Tik Tok. But damn, grades meant something to the world, and as much as they liked to think it only consisted of their pixelated screens it truly didnât. Jamie had been in their shoes, of course sheâd had to in order to become a teacher, but perspectives changed mightily the moment the shoe was on the other foot. Sheâd been teaching pretty much non stop for six years now, and had chosen it as her future. It was sometimes tough to see things entirely from her students points of view. The way Brady didnât seem totally able to commit to catching some of the sights wasnât lost on Jamie, her head tilting as her lip went out in a soft pout. âIf you canât take a moment, that blows. Donât worry about it, seriously.â She never wanted to be an inconvenience, especially not to a friend. âSure, your job is to have fun, but itâs still a job at the end of the day. I get sizable joy in my Michelangelo lectures showing how his David has an incredibly small penis but I still get hand cramps from grading papers and hate how early I have to get. Seriously, if theyâd just push it a couple hours, thatâs all Iâm asking.â
