“She dedicates herself entirely to the noble cause of protecting her country, but she doesn’t do it simply for noble reasons. She is terrified of forging intimate relationships with others—which is, basically, what constitutes a life—because she knows the kind of damage that her condition her wreak. Because she has such an anemic life, it is easier for her to risk losing it on behalf of her cause. While this is an advantage of sorts, she must live with the pain of her loneliness.” –Claire Danes

It is uniquely devastating to get obsessed with a show that has a dead fandom
BATES: Who sent you a card? ANNA: I don't know. It's not signed.
ANNA: Right. Can I do anything more for you? MARY: No, thank you.
“She isn’t crazy. The heroism uber alles part, that’s kind of deluded. But the part where they stay holding onto each other, through the storm, and it keeps them both alive? That’s the only kind of love I trust. Of all the million kinds of definitions for love this show has given us, it’s the only positive one that I also happen to agree with: Love is a harsh, stark thing, a thing that can destroy people and places, but if we don’t all get out alive, we did something wrong.” –Jacob Clifton
i’ve been thinking about this scene a lot because there are so many layers to it. but what really stands out for me is that there’s almost this sort of sick, quasi-religious aspect to their relationship.
i think it really demonstrates a lot of the internal damage to brody’s psyche as well. his conversion to islam was under intense torture and is very trauma based, islam was the life preserver thrown to him by his captor as a means of molding him into something more workable.
and from brody’s perspective, carrie is the person who knows the most about him after only allah. carrie knows everything he has done to everybody, and she’s willing to forgive him. there’s the appeal of martyrdom, more so than of success.
and in carrie’s own hopeful delusions, she has made a Christ figure of him. if he can just go and complete this mission, then it will erase the past, all sins will be forgiven, they can start over, be born again.
and he doesn’t see it quite the same way she does, but their worldviews are compatible enough for them to be on the same page about it. and all the debate about whether or not brody really did love carrie aside, i do believe that his agreeing to go to iran later in the series was his apology to carrie. however, his actually going was his apology to dana.
in case u were wondering my account is a safe space for evil and sinister women
