Melissa was a perfectly ordinary girl at a boarding school in the kingdom of Aladiana. She was an average student, with a handful of friends, unremarkable, and all in all, completely normal.
Genevieve was the princess of the land. She loved the attention, the parties, and all the perks that came with life in the public eye.
And yet, both their lives were about to take a 180-degree turn…
Princess Genevieve’s Downfall – Is She Now Facing Banishment?
The headline graced the front two pages of the News Daily. Annoyed, Melissa flipped on. Who cared about the pompous princess anyway? Everyone in the country knew she regularly went overboard at parties. Whether drunk or sober, she caused one scandal after another. Just because she was the heir to the throne, she apparently believed she could behave however she wanted. And that usually meant behaving badly. When she once broke a paparazzo’s nose because he sold a panty shot of her to the tabloids for a hefty sum, the whole of Aladiana gossiped about it for two weeks.
“So, what’s our scandal princess up to now?” asked Lily, sitting across from Melissa and putting a spoonful of porridge into her mouth. “No idea, and I don’t care,” Melissa replied, annoyed, and pushed a red curl out of her face. “You can have the newspaper right now if you really want to read it.” Lily grinned. “Bring on the gossip. My life isn’t even half as exciting as Genevieve’s.” “Mine isn’t either,” Melissa replied dully. “And I’m quite happy about that. I like my boring life as an ordinary person. And I intend to keep it that way.” Melissa continued flipping through the newspaper, searching for an article that might interest her—without success. Wordlessly, she handed it to Lily, who immediately devoured the headline about the princess.
“Ladies, if I may have your attention!” The headmistress of the boarding school, Mrs Craftford, stood at the entrance to the cafeteria. As always, her brown hair was pulled back in a tight bun. Her sharp eyes scanned the girls, silencing even the last of them. “We are welcoming a new student today. However, she is likely already known to everyone here. I therefore ask for your discretion and that you treat her with due respect.”
“If she earns my respect, no problem,” thought Melissa.
Before Mrs Craftford could say another word, a blonde woman in expensive-looking clothes marched into the cafeteria. If it had been quiet before, it was now deathly silent in the large room. Melissa found this woman somehow familiar, but she couldn’t place her face. Her gaze drifted absently to the newspaper Lily was still holding open. The same arrogant face stared back at her. Only now she looked more refreshed than in the newspaper picture. Was this really Princess Genevieve Elisabeth Louise Dahlia of Aladiana? Good heavens, this must be a joke!
“Your Highness, freshly prepared meals are served here three times a day for our students. I’d also like to introduce you to your roommates: Anne Halton and Heather Smith.” The headmistress gestured for the two students at the next table to stand up. They rose and curtsied, prompting Melissa to roll her eyes. “Such hypocrites. They’re always badmouthing her, and now they’re acting subservient? Don’t make me laugh!”
“I’d now like to show you your room,” the headmistress said to the princess and left the cafeteria with her.
As soon as the door closed behind them, a loud murmur of voices erupted. Some students were excited to be going to school with the princess, while others gossiped about why she’d been sent to this particular school to get rid of her and whether another school wouldn’t have sufficed. “I’m sure no other school was stupid enough to take her,” Melissa heard Heather laugh. “How much do you think the royal family had to bribe to get Mrs Craftford to back down?” Anne giggled.
“Mel, jaw.” Melissa hadn’t noticed she was clenching her teeth until Lily pointed it out. “It’ll ruin your pretty little teeth,” Lily had said when she first noticed it. Back then, they were new to Honeysuckle School for Girls, and Melissa was hopelessly overwhelmed by everything. Five years later, she still tended to clench her teeth whenever something stressed or annoyed her. And right now, it was both at once. Resignedly, she relaxed her tense jaw.

“It’s unbelievable they’re putting the princess in a room with the two biggest gossips in the world!” Shaking her head, Lily stuffed her homework into her leather bag. “Mrs Craftford can’t seriously believe that Princess Genevieve is in the best hands with them! Yes, they probably know the most about her, but that’s only because they’re so obsessed with gossip. And now they’ll have even more information to spread about her.” “You’re never one to shy away from listening to gossip about the princess,” Melissa chimed in. Lily stopped mid-movement. “True. But unlike those two bitches, I still have some morals and decency, and I would never talk about the princess the way they did earlier. Especially not when you’re sharing a room with her.” With a little too much energy, Lily shook her bag to shift its contents and fasten the buckle. “I can only think how glad I am not to be the unlucky one who has to share a room with your snotty attitude. She seemed even more arrogant than you’d expect from a princess,” Melissa snorted. “Give her a chance,” Lily said gently, slinging her bag over her shoulder. “Maybe she’s not so bad.” “Yeah, maybe.” Melissa nodded. And maybe she’s just as much of a two-faced bitch as Anne and Heather. Who knows?
