When i open my front camera
Not to shade troy books but damn bitch please give credit to where each thing is from like… Dont give me a complex seal and say shit like “pentacle of arte” without any references to its origin other than “ceremonial magic” what book? Is this the original version? What?????
Ceremonial magicians and fact checkers help me out is it ok for me to be using this symbol as a working pentacle or is that a bad move ?
It’s certainly Solomonic, but I’m not sure of the original source! Interesting that it’s coming up in Gary’s work, especially since the tetragrammaton is so on display here, which I don’t think features prominently in her practice.
Update: my boyfriend who knows more about ceremonial magic than I do just flipped through The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage books 1-3. No dice with this seal there, but he found it in A.E. Waite’s Book of Ceremonial Magic in the section “concerning the rite of conjuration from the lemegeton”. It is indeed a double seal of Solomon! Pages 221-222.
@foggy-student-witch
(its 186 on the pdf but heres a screenshot of it for comparison)
Ok so we’ve figured this out. This is a seal for forcing demons to take on a pleasing form during a conjuration from the lemmegaton AKA greater key of solomon the king. (Correct me if any of that’s mislead)
If you’re a reader of troy Books DO NOT use this as a working pentacle like Gemma suggests. Its really not a good idea to do spirit work and the like when you have a demon binding pentacle on your altar.
(unless your doing goetic stuff but that has its own set of rules)
So… A few things about this series of comments…
A.This is the Hexagram of Arte [originally, “ Solomons sexangled [hexagonal] ffigure”, go see for yourself here] from the Goetia, which is book 1 of the Lemegeton (comonly known as the Lesser Key of Solomon, not the Greater Key of Solomon). It is described in the text (again, which you should read, here) as follows, “This figure is to be made on parchment made of a calfes Skin and worne at the Skirtt of ye white vestment, and covered wth a lennen [linen] cloath to ye which is to be shewed to the spirits when they are appeared that they may be compelled to be obedient and take a humane shape &c.”
B. This sort of thing is exactly what you should use for “spirit work” and precisely as Gary suggests. This is applicable to any sort of spirit that you would ever be actually evoking that needs to be constrained (which should be almost always). Spirits are way more often than not NOT your friends and should be treated such, especially for the catalogues of the Lemegeton and the Verum. Generally, they are best treated as contractors that probably want to do you grievous harm in the end- you should probably just make them do exactly what you want and pay them for the work ONLY AND STRICTLY AFTER the work is complete.
C. Christian Magickal Tech is actually insanely common in actual Tradcraft, folk magick, hoodoo, conjure, braucheri, etc. and even features heavily in the author’s craft. She wrote a book called The Charmer’s Psalter, as in the Psalms, and a ton of her tech is legit lifted directy from the Solomonic Grimoire Traditions, such as the greater and lesser keys, Grimoirium Verum, Secrets of Solomon, and if you need proof of these things look into a book called “The Grimoire of Arthur Gauntlet” for the confluence of witchcraft and Christianity in history, or even look at the pentacles taken from the Greater Key of Solomon in the authors other works like Cornish Book of Ways and the same Black Toad, and all of these books can be found FOR FREE online as PDFs with a simple google search. This can also be seen in modern books like Huson’s Mastering Witchcraft (which has a really fucking messy and dangerous conjuration of Vassago, which is a spirit listed in the same aforementioned Goetia) and Secrets of Solomon (a literal book confiscated from actual witches during the Venetian inquisition).
Please read the Grimoires after learning where the tech comes from and understand that all these traditions converge, intermingle, and form a workable system. Also, please refer to the tags of this reblog. @foggy-student-witch

@thedeedwithaname
1st) stop with the tags, i understand thats what you do with grimoire spirits, fae and any spirits known to be that dangerous (generally most in europe with some exceptions) but even then other methods exist for tricky folk spirits. However not everyone calls on those spirits and not every tradition sees all spirits as something to be constrained. Try constraining an ancestor or an orisha or a god and see how far you get with “all spirits need constraining” as some will wreck you the second they’re free/at the very attempt.
2) not all spirits will bend to names of god if they are entirely independent of grimoire or even European tradition
3) Gemma actually suggests to use this as a charging plate/to manifest so again maybe you read before condoning her her suggestions
4) Gemmas idea of traditional witchcraft leaves out every other important aspect of grimoire magic so would this even do that much good independent of the rest assuming your summoning the stuff you’d need this for?
5) you’re saying its fine for folk magic to be a mix but then tag “do as the grimoire says” (which i agree with and never disputed)
Your reply is kinda exemplary of the Mansplaining and lordyness that goes on in some parts of the occult community and came off a bit arrogant and dismissive.
If that wasnt your intention fair enough
1) If you expect an author to provide every way on earth to constrain spirits, you’re an idiot. Authors provide information about their practice, not the practice you wish they had. Who gives a shit if some people don’t believe in constraining spirits, the author does so that’s what they’re gonna write about. People aren’t obligated to include every possible option and paradigm in their work and to do so makes your writing useless and wishywashy.
1.B) You can absolutely constrain an ancestor you fuckin noob. A ghost being tangentially related to you does not make restraint practices instantly fail. Every ghost is someone’s ancestor. I’d argue that if you don’t know how to constrain one you should back far away from spirit work until you can reliably. Additionally many traditions include options for constraining gods so they don’t just immediately kill you. The PGM for example contains a number of this. No idea regarding orishas because I don’t practice those traditions and I’d bet good money neither do you.
2) If you know what you’re doing, most will. I’ve actually never encountered a single one who wouldn’t regardless of tradition or place of origin because it’s not a mere belief in an entity that creates the power. If you want to take a less religious look at it, you can easily view the names of the Abrahamic god as words that carry a specific magick power rather than referring to believing in the deity. I suspect you probably don’t throw such a tantrum when a tradwitch uses the names of the man in black or a witch of literally any other tradition uses the names of their deities and spirits in order to command spirits because it’s understood that divine names regardless of tradition are words containing magical power. The Abrahamic god is no different and the fact that a witch who worships Bucca uses them might tip you off on that.
3) This symbol is indeed used to manifest shit. It’s literally part of it’s main purpose.
4) British folk magick contains a huge amount of material from the grimoire tradition. These grimoire practices have been adapted into folk tradition for literally hundreds of years all across the western world and what she’s written is perfectly inline with the traditional folk uses of grimtrad tech. In fact there are more grimtrad materials on the very page you posted. The hexagram of art’s usage is not limited simply to Solomonic practices which is precisely why it’s being included here and within other folk practices. If you take the time to actually read how witchcraft was historically practiced in Europe, and England in particular, this should become incredibly apparent.
4) While not a historical grimoire, Gary’s books are grimoires themselves so yes it would be logical to read and do what it says if you’re interested in practicing her style of magic. Learn the rules (and often that means doing a bit of research aside from the single book you’re reading) before you try and break the rules. Note that deed also said “ Please read the Grimoires after learning where the tech comes from and understand that all these traditions converge, intermingle, and form a workable system“. What he meant was incredibly straightforward - research the shit the books refer to for a deeper understanding, especially when you’re confused. That’s honestly a very feeble attempt at a gotcha.
5) You asked to be corrected if any of your post was misleading. Almost all of it was and you were told why. Calling that mansplaining is tedious as fuck and a very obvious attempt to cover up your embarrassment at being corrected by pretending you’re doing some favor to women. When you decide that correct, accurate information is offensive and derogatory to women, you are doing way more harm than good and also perpetuating misogynistic ideas about female occultists as a whole. Accurate information does not harm women, what harms women is male occultists pretending like we’re too soft and weak to handle correct information and using us as a cover for their own problems.
Ok. I agree i was mislead. Thank you for the parts where you actually explained.
But you’ve all got to understand that no one is receptive to criticism and information when they’re
A) being called noobs and idiots
B) being given the criticism in derogatory and condescending manners
C) being called a fucking idiot when they’re new to concepts and accused of trying to fucking infiltrate some secret gate of occultism/friend group like a villian
Like i get that overuse of “Mansplaining” is a bad thing and is a disservice to feminism
But what the fuck does that sound like to you?
I admit i was wrong and trying to understand
But i reacted with annoyance cause some of you frankly come off as dicks and im not sure if thats a miscommunication or if there’s really this amount of hostility behind your reblogs…
Deed didn’t do any of that and he wasn’t rude to you, he just gave you the correct information you asked for and you immediately accused him of mansplaining for no other reason than you were wrong. And that’s why I’m being a dick to you
Sighhhh. I would like to add to all of this that I have actually made the damned thing. Here it is. I made it out of wood to act as a “charging plate.”
I made an exact copy of it from Gary’s illustration. I’ve had it for about a year. It has been quite effective for the purposes stated in Gary’s text. Demons haven’t manifested in anyone’s butthole or anything.
The meanings of symbols can change over time. Intent is still meaningful. Folkloric witchcraft heavily bastardizes certain grimoires and is still valid blah blah blah.
