Too sappy?
Celia Pacquola
Supersize VS Super Skinny
THEMES - series.
Each episode will have a theme, most likely to be the following:
* sex before marriage ("SEX")
* religion and dating ("FAITH")
* familial pressure and inter-cultural dating ("FAMILY")
* dating in a modern context ("SOCIAL")
Within these episodes, participants will be set challenges, for example, in the "Social" episode, two of the four participants will be sent to speed-dating nights, while the other two will try their hand at online dating.
A video of Dan Savage talking about marriage and 'the one(s)'.
STYLE - series.
HOST, MUSIC & NARRATION:
We are hoping to find a host for the show - maybe two, and include 'experts' to chime in with information and statistics (Super Size VS Super Skinny, The Nest).
The series will be narrated by the host, who will act a guide and confidant. They will be shown on camera at times interacting with participants, answering any questions or talking issues through with them (Savage U).
In Savage U, Dan Savage and Lauren Hutchinson spend time with the participants talking to them about their issues with relationships and sex as well as giving Q&A lectures across a number of universities in the US.
STYLE - series.
CAMERA, OPENING CREDITS & GRAPHICS:
While our show won't be a 'social experiment' like some of the other popular doco series aired on SBS (such as The Nest and GBTWYCF), we will be filming in a similar manner to these shows. Our cameras will follow the participants or 'characters' if you will, in a fly on the wall manner as they go about their lives, and they may be asked questions by the host(s) that time. However, the characters will also be interviewed in a to-camera style on specific topics being covered in any given episode.
This will mean that the interviewer will not be visible and they will simply be talking to the camera, much in the style of a video diary with set topics to be discussed.
SBS
Our imagined project has already been set funding from SBS and Screen Australia, but have been looking into what it is exactly that SBS are looking for. Following are excerpts from their website.
Single Documentaries, Short Series and Seasons * We are also looking for short run series of 2 – 4 episodes that delve into subject areas such as: social inclusion, race, health, the immigration debate, religion. Islam for example is something we are very keen to explore.
* We are also looking for fresh, new documentary on screen talent. A provocative multicultural voice who can appeal to our core documentary audience and who can explore Australia from a multicultural perspective with intelligence and a playful nature.
Our project would cover these areas in that it will be a short series of four episodes which discuss social interactions between people of different races and religions. It will explore the traditions of dating and marriage from a multicultural perspective.
A section of the homepage for the SBS documentary series, Go Back to Where You Came From. We are paying particular attention to this series due to it's social media interaction and the fact that it is an SBS funded project.
Angleah Johnson, a female Mexican-Native-American comedian's sketch on the ways in which men of different ethnicity flirt.
22. SBS Indie Option
A TV documentary, website and Facebook page. Your choice of topic for a multi-cultural audience.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
Young adults (people between the ages of 18 and 24) of varying ethnic and religious backgrounds.
TOPIC:
Dating in Australia.
Idea was formed after deciding on a target audience and talking about the types of documentary series that we think are popular (those mentioned were things like Agony Aunts, Grumpy Old (Wo)men, Big Fat Gypsy Weddings).
FORMAT:
We decided on a short series (2-4 episodes) to be aired on SBS and followed by an episode of Insight after the finale. We threw around some ideas as to what the episodes would be based on and came up with a few 'topical' episode ideas:
1) Dating within (and outside) your own culture.
2) Family influence on dating and marriage.
3) Online dating and the impact of social media.
4) Inter-racial dating. *
* 1& 4 are similar.
