NMJ642 - Mastery Journal
Another course has come and gone on this Full Sail journey and it has been a learning opportunity. I enjoyed learning about the different cases, especially those dealing with deceptive advertisement. I wish there could have been deeper discussions and debate concerning these types of cases, but I guess that is one of the limitations of online courses. A discussion board limits the depth in which one can go because of the lack of immediate interaction form the other participants. As a Social Studies teacher I thoroughly enjoy doing these types of activities with my students as it gets them thinking.
Understanding how to conduct your business in a truthful and professional manner will keep you out of the courtroom. As journalists we must be able to draw the line between selling our product or ourselves and manipulating the people with which we interact. We need to be aware of the pitfalls involved with spreading information to those who may be ignorant to the legal aspects of communication.
Lesson one; always tell the truth. We have to understand that communicating is not about manipulating, which is very fine line, especially when it is your job to sell something. Even when we write a blog post we are attempting to sell something, whether it is a product or our point of view. We have to be cognizant of the possible legal and personal ramifications of what we write or what we support. Even though we may have a small blog with a small following we still have a responsibility to be truthful in how we write or how we portray people in our writing. Lesson: ALWAYS TELL THE TRUTH.
Class Reflection
All I can say is “Wow”! There is so much happening in the classes with planning stories and coming up with pertinent ideas. I has been extremely difficult trying to maintain focus on this class an teaching school especially as we have entered the dreaded “testing season” where everything seems to be about testing and altered schedules and trying to find a way to prepare the kids, and lets not forget we have 23 days left of school so the kids are a bit excited.
I think the key thing I learned was that Spring Break in the middle of a four week class is not a good thing. It was like we were pushing and after week three we take a week long break. It was a momentum killer. On the other hand it was nice to have a break from class.
I am having a hard time linking the content to what I am doing. The sale of writing that I am gearing toward is not like what others are doing. I do not see myself as a reporter, but rather as a writer. My readers are not interested in reading about events, but are eager to learn about new ideas and concepts.
This puts me on a different track as the requirements have me needing to attend an event, but it leaves me wondering why because that is not meeting my learning goals.
I am learning about writing styles and the elements that will make my writing readable and more enjoyable and that is great. Practice makes perfect.
In classrooms across the United States, and quite possibly the entire world, educators are feverishly working on lessons that intertwin...
Read this with an open mind ... are we capitalizing on student addiction?
There are Fundamentals in Enverything
The New Media and Communications class has been an enlightening class as it made me look at the details of journalism. This introductory course placed the attention on the fundamentals of writing for an open market and it helped me identify my place in this world of writing. My goal going into this degree program was to somehow identify where my voice fits into the crowded journalism field. I am not looking to leave my current job, but rather looking to expand my horizons through writing and move myself to the next level and this class has set the gears into motion.
There were parts that were not new information to me, like discussing the role of social media. I have a nice following on Twitter, but this class has helped me understand how to leverage this following and tailor my writing to fit this audience. Narrowing my ideas and focusing on the smaller details to create a better story for my readers. Previously, I felt I was tossing words into a blog and letting it fly, but now I realize I could produce a better article if I spent time researching the content and adding more voices instead of merely relying on my own experiences. It is strange that it took this class to get me to realize something I tell my students all the time. Research and use multiple sources in your writing as it will give it more validity. Now it is time to apply it to my own writing.
Let the writing adventure continue!

America
No matter how you feel about the current political climate, America is still a pretty awesome place to live.
The Journey Continues
One of the goals of education is to instill the desire to be a life long learner. A life long learner is someone who is not afraid to learn new things to further their careers not are they afraid to learn new things just for the fun of it. Too often, many people cease to learn when they leave the confines of the walls of education and this results in stagnation. Many leave graduation bright eyed and ready for the challenge of “adulting” and everything that entails only to realize they need to learn to adult before they can actually “adult”. That is part of being a life long learner. If you want to know more about something do not be afraid to teach yourself or find someone who can sho you the way.
Life is not about a singular journey, but rather, a series of journeys that intertwine with each other. Sometimes we have to be ok with looping back around because it will help us meet a new goal. That is what I am doing right now as I embark on a new journey. I am looping back around to pick up some new knowledge so I can attain a new goal. It is a goal I had not initially set for myself, but one that has evolved over time.
Hopefully, my journey may inspire.
It is so easy to give up, hard to fight back in the face of adversity, but sometimes things work out for the best.
Check one, two, three ... is this thing still on?
