"I was with some friends, watching an aurora from space, when we got a message that said ‘Once in a lifetime event happening’ at this star. They didn’t tell us any more than that, but when we arrived at the solar observatory, this creature, that they call a Sun-Eater, was floating around, getting ready to devour that star."

Space? Kaito eyes the person before him critically.

He was just in space? And saw the equivalent of a giant squid devour a star?

Every reasonable part of him tells him that this video is fake. That shooting an event that probably happened light years away isn't something that just happens to be on the phone of someone around his age, much less anyone else's.

But turning this away is missing the opportunity of a lifetime.

"What exactly is a Sun-Eater? No, more importantly, who are you?"

ⓜⓔⓓⓐⓛⓢ} "There’s no way that guy would be dead so easily.. even if he was here." Ankh stated simply, almost insensitively to his words. "That guy can more than easily defend himself, he’s not powerless.. and I’d know if he died." He stated, again, almost like it was a defined fact. "But at least I know he is probably not around here. That’s another place off the list of possibilities but.." He looked around again before looking once more at the fruit.

"A place like this looks like some place he’d end up. Maybe if I wait he will arrive." He stated before he finally touched the fruit that had been taunting him this whole time and his eyes went wide, pulling his hand away quickly.

"What… What is this?" He practically yelled turning back to the man, since he seemed to know what this shit was.

"What the hell kind of fruit is THAT.”

With his words he stepped towards him. “That’s no normal fucking fruit.. Why did it give off that feeling when I touched it..? … You know why.. I know you know why.” How did he know?

Honestly he wasn’t completely sure.

The only thing that told him he might know for certain was that he had this.. feeling to him. Of course, being what he was (not that he knew what that was) he could feel the desire coming off of Kaito. That desire of power, of strength. That same feeling of desire didn’t feel so different from the desire that went through him when he touched the fruit, even if the desire was a different kind the energy was the same. Damn, he knew too, if he was any normal person he’d not be able to stop himself from eating it.. Why did it want him to eat it? And why didn’t he get affected?

"What. The. Fuck. Is. this?!"

Kaito raises an eyebrow.

Was this man a psychic? Some kind of empath?

The demands were a refreshing change from the being’s previous hesitancy. The assurance that his companion was alright was all too typical.

"I told you, didn’t I?"

Kaito reaches for a nearby vine, picking off one of its fruits. Since he doesn’t have his driver on, it doesn’t transform.

"These are the fruits of Helheim. Within their poison, is unimaginable power. Power to turn anyone into a monster."

He looks at it for a second, brings it up to his lips, and takes a bite.

Nothing changes.

"I suppose you could call them invaders.”

Rather than respond, he takes out his phone, showing video footage of a massive multi-tentacled beast literally eating a red giant star. The footage is shot from the phone, and lasts five minutes from the time the creature starts to when nothing remains.

"I saw that happen."

Kaito's eyes grow wide as he watches. Forgetting to order, he quickly pulls up a chair next to the other man and sits down.

"Explain."

He’s seen the suit before, the times he passed through Zawame. He knows this person, and he places a hand against the table to brace himself and catch his breath.

After counting to ten and breathing deeply, he’s able to look up at Kaito. “Sorry you had to see that. I just witnessed something no human should ever see.”

"And what would that be?"

Kaito idly thumbs the train ticket in his pocket, his return ticket to Zawame.

While there was the chance that whatever this person was talking about would be completely ridiculous, he couldn't deny the possible merit in this conversation.

She gasped, she had to be hallucinating, that looked just like....but it couldn't be...."Kaito?"

"Yoko." he says, nodding in acknowledgement.

He steps closer, until he stands right next to her against the tree.

ⓜⓔⓓⓐⓛⓢ} "Fruits.. of Helheim.." Ankh questioned. "I haven’t heard of Helheim but I guess I wouldn’t be surprised. I’ve been spending my time chasing after my friend I haven’t really been paying much attention until this abandoned city caught my eye." He admitted before motioning behind him..

On the side of a street, leaning against the curb was a bike, not a motorized bike. Just a normal two wheeled bike someone peddled to get around on with a woven basket on the front. “To answer how I got here.. I’ve been riding that all over.. Isn’t exactly the fastest way to travel but it’s my own mode of transportation. My friend though uses a motorcycle.. So I have no idea where he could have ended up, I just have a feeling, I suppose the hope, that I might be going in the right direction.”

Yes he was answering his questions honestly and without any problems but he was honestly just used to that. He did work at a restaurant and he was used to being asked questions and giving the answer that was needed to it. Well unless it was the boss and why Eiji and him had to run out all the time. Those were always well thought out fibs that tried their best to hide the truth in them.

Speaking of his job he honestly missed it. He was starting to become pretty good at cooking. It was awesome being a chief for the place instead of cleaning all the time. It was a lot more fun and a lot more useful. He hoped the replacements he found to take up for the two of them being missing for a long time won’t steal their jobs. He was looking forward to going back so much…

But he needed to think back about what was going on now. Suddenly looking up back at Kaito again as he ‘woke up’ from his thoughts about work, obviously having been temporarily distracted.

A traveler, then.

It's unlikely, incredibly unlikely, that someone who had moved around so much, had seen so much, would be unaware of Helheim's invasion.

Unlikely, but not impossible. There was no lack of willfully ignorant people in this world, content in their power and unwilling to see the world for what it truly was. That creature could very well be one of them.

Who was obviously far less powerful than Kaito originally thought.

The bike was a dead giveaway. Excluding Kazuraba, what kind of person, with power far surpassing a normal human's, would travel across the country by bicycle?

The arm, itself, was probably only decorative at best.

"Your friend isn't in this city. If he is, then he's dead."

Kaito had more than a few Invess in the city, and if there was another clueless wanderer here, well the answer would be obvious, wouldn't it?

Kaito turns around and starts to walk away.

If this creature survived, then so be it. If he didn't, then so be it.

There were other, more pressing matters to deal with right now.

ⓜⓔⓓⓐⓛⓢ} Tilting his head a bit he looked him over. The guy seemed human enough. His style seemed pretty nice as well though he looked a bit unkept. “I’m just passing through.” The guy stated even as he tilted his head a bit the other way studying him a bit more.

"I’m trying to find someone and I don’t know where he went and while searching for him I ended up here.. Wherever this dead city is supposed to have been." He stated, with obvious lack of knowledge of anything that transpired here. He was going to lie but he had no reason to deny this guy knowledge, maybe he could help.

Or maybe he’d end up being one of those same monsters OOO has to fight, either way he had no reason not to talk to him since he had no leads and no clue what to really do next. Turning his head away he looked back at the fruit again. It still made him curious. Just what was it? It honestly looked pretty cool but it looked so unEarthly.

"Why is this stuff everywhere..?" He asked, but it was more like a self question since he asked it very softly and not really directed towards the man who spoke to him. His eyes did go back to the man, he felt nervous keeping his eyes off him for too long.

The fact batters around Kaito's brain for a moment, unable to orient itself in his thoughts.

What was that man? His expression had seemed far too honest, far too confused for someone attempting to deceive him. 'Seemed' being the key word here. There were liars in the world, far too skilled at their craft for him, even with all this power, to easily spot.

Amnesia was an option, albeit a rather sketchy one. Faking amnesia was far too easy and the other man was far too aware of having a companion and far too little aware of the plants that had rapidly grown and invaded the world.

There was a third option. None of the above. That man was not an Overlord or Invess, but something else entirely. Before, Kaito would have dismissed it out of hand but now, with concepts like 'time travel' and 'omnipotence' becoming all too real, he'd have to consider it.

However, there was no need to think too hard about this task. If that creature was asking questions, he was unintentionally answering just as many.

"They're the fruits of Helheim. They've been here for a while." Kaito said, gesturing the vines all around them.

"As for your companion, how exactly did you get here?"

She sat down and rested her head against the tree staring off into space not speaking, not really doing much of anything, just sitting there, she was stragely drawn to the tree that Kouta and Mai had created, there was something familiar about it.

Kaito concentrates on making himself visible, walking around the tree towards the place she was sitting.

He doesn't greet here. There are no teary hellos or frantic waving.

Not for them, at least.

Instead, with his gaze fixed, Kaito simply moves into her line of sight

ⓜⓔⓓⓐⓛⓢ} Of course. Ever since he woke up he always had bad luck didn’t he? Eiji went off to who knows where without him, maybe letting him hold a few combos of medals on his own meant he wasn’t as needed to him. After all he was always late to battle even if he always sensed the enemy and was the one to tell Eiji where it was.

Sighing he looked around. In an effort to find Eiji he tried to track anything he could but it didn’t seem to be the energy of those.. monster things they usually fought. Honestly he had no idea what they were called or how they were made. How was he supposed to? He didn’t even know why he had a weird monstery hand for a right arm.

Either way he continued on his way.

What confused him was the city being so dead and lifeless. About the only thing that seemed to give the place life were all the vines with strange fruit growing from them. Curious he walked over to one and reached out to pick it off with his monster arm, he wasn’t going to eat it but he was just wanting to get a better look.. But his hand stopped before touching it as he heard footsteps that made him turn around.

"Who’s there..?"

Kaito steps closer, ready to shift into his Invess form if needed.

The person, no being, seemed human enough. But upon closer inspection, he could see that their right arm, at least, was far from anything resembling human.

It was bright red, a few other colors mixed in, and had what could best be described as claws for nails.

All evidence pointed to the man being some sort of early stage Invess.

The monstrous appendage, the fascination with the Helheim fruit, etc.

But there was just as much evidence, if not more, pointing out the opposite.

The coherency, the ability to speak, the way he didn't frantically devour the fruit the moment he saw it.

In short, this person was either an Overlord that had never revealed themselves or someone like Kaito.

He wasn't arrogant enough to discount the possibility of someone else being infected by the vines, someone else eating the fruit and surviving. Someone else with powers like his.

Kaito would be lying if he said the thought didn't excite him.

He ignores the man's question and asks his own.

"What are you doing here?"

Kaito dies.

It isn't quick or painless. He screams in pain for what feels like minutes when Kazuraba stabs him with his own sword, his own power that destroys him from the inside out, both figuratively and literally. Smiles in happiness as he passes away in the arms of his rival, someone he acknowledged. Someone, who in another life, another world, he would have happily called a friend.

Except it isn't the end for him.

Mai (or is it her and Kazuraba both?) revive him as a tree. The sacred tree. Right in the middle of the lot it was taken from.

It takes a while to adapt, even longer to understand his limits, but after a while he's able to catch glimpses of conversation about the survivors.

He hears about Zack and Peco happily dancing as part of Team Baron. He hears about Jonouchi and Oren and the Charmant II. He even hears about the Kureishimas and their efforts to make up for Yggdrasil, make up for supporting the Overlords.

Yet, he doesn't hear a single thing, not even the wildest rumor about Yoko Minato. The person who was willing to die to save him.

She transformed quickly enough back then, her suit protecting her from the worst of the fall. She was alive but not unharmed.

Her ankle was swollen, her leg broken. Nothing that wouldn't heal in time, but something that would hamper her nonetheless. The last time he saw her, he left her with a portion of his Invess army to lead and nothing since. The Invess, he knew would have left with Kazuraba and Mai.

Her, he wasn't too sure.

Light footsteps, careful and measured, snap Kaito out of his thoughts. They approach the tree.

"Can you fight?"

She looked up from her magazine with a puzzled look on her face, all she could really think of as a response was “are you kidding?”

"See that, you managed to catch it, because your instincts and your conscious mind were fully lined up, it’s only in times like that I stop holding back."

Kaito glares at her, arranging himself back to some semblance of dignity. Something around the lines of not being stabbed to death by a pencil.

It's obvious he isn't going to get the answers he wants. Perhaps, it's best to let this topic go.

For the time being of course.

"This would" She threw a sharpened pencil at him fast enough and hard enough to kill him.

Kaito's never been afraid to die, never valued his life much but he's far from being suicidal. He barely has time to throw an arm above his face as the projectile hurtles towards him.

"Can you fight?"

She looked up from her magazine with a puzzled look on her face, all she could really think of as a response was “are you kidding?”

"I do, but I haven’t been given reason to for a while." she responded, it took a few seconds before she continued "so to answer your question, i can when the need arises."

"And just would constitute as a need?"

The moment Kaito says it, he knows he's not likely to get a straight answer.

Minato Yoko's stepped in to save his life once before, possibly more if he's read Ryouma Sengoku right. Between the power-hungry Sid and the mad scientist, it was always her motivations that were unclear. Even after the Overlords and Invess had swarmed Zawame, it was she who had discarded Yggdrasil the moment Sengoku betrayed her.

On some level, he knows it's not his business, that her reasons are hers alone. On the other hand, the issue had been nagging him for days, and he was far from being the type to hesitate to ask questions.

"I'm not questioning your skills." After all, Kaito had experienced them first-hand. Felt the bruises for days after escaping Yggdrasil Headquarters.

"I've seen you subdue us easily, arrange an escape easily. But I've never seen something like that afterwards. You don't fight, you test."

"So," he says, he repeats. "Can you fight?"

"I’m terrified. But I’m going to fight too."

Kaito stands up. He isn’t sure exactly how he got involved in this mess with time traveling trains and sand-based spirits, but he is involved nonetheless.

Mindlessly rampaging Invess he can ignore, but the opportunity to test himself against beings who can change the flow of time itself is too tempting to pass up.

Ryoutaro Nogami, at first glance, is dismissible.

Soft-spoken. Hesitant. Weak.

But with the man’s admission, Kaito finds himself questioning that last quality.

"Are you coming?" He asks, one foot already outside the dining compartment.

"I don’t want to change anything because there’s no point in changing anything.  The future isn’t set in stone but that doesn’t mean we can just make the past how we want it."  Ryoutaro pulled the door open and was greeted with the humid air of a summer night.  It had just rained, probably, and he sneezed against the sudden assault on his senses.  There’d been a report of something attacking a place in town and, well, Ryoutaro happened to think the sound of whatever it was matched an Imagin.  Or at least something worth checking out.

"As for forcing, you’ll find sometimes it’s easier to push than pull.  I’m not going to let myself be lead around but I won’t be a leader either.  I just want to do what I can."

Kaito grits his teeth and leaves angry nail-shaped indents in his palms. If anything, there's no point in continuing this argument. No point getting angry because Ryoutaro Nogami isn't different. He's just the same as the rest.

For now, it's best to cooperate. Find the Imagin (is that what those creatures were called?) and subdue it.

"We'll split up." He says, pointing in the direction he'll be headed. "We'll cover more ground that way."

He may be working with Nogami, but in no way did that have to mean they were working together.

His face is pale from fright. He’s just witnessed something beyond the scope a human can normally see.

"It…ate it all. It was so quick. It ate it all in five minutes…" He stammers, still trying to make sense of it.

It's rare that Kaito ventures outside of Zawame City.

It's not just the money, he had only established Team Baron a year ago, only started winning more money than he's ever had a year ago, but also in the fact that Zawame was home. Zawame was his.

But things happen and circumstances change, so here he was, miles away from home. The business with the new tailor had been finalized quickly enough, the pieces ordered and paid for.

Kaito enters the nearest restaurant, not bothering to pay attention to the sign, only to see what looks like a high school student (with a rather large pompadour) having a panic attack.

"For others."  The train pulled to a complete stop and Ryoutaro pulled the massive door open, letting in the light from the sands of time.  A rush of warm air flooded the DenLiner as he stepped off, motioning the other to follow.  "I fight because it needs to be done, and I can’t just stand by and do nothing."  

He stepped down and started towards the exit, a door in the distance.  ”And I don’t give up on myself.  If I were to do that I’d never be forgiven.  I’m stronger than I think, or so I’ve been told.”

Kaito's heard it all before.

For others. I can't just watch. I won't be forgiven if I just watch.

The dedication to say such things, to follow them up with your own actions, is without a doubt admirable.

It's also incredibly, painstakingly naive.

Throwing all of your efforts to protect a worthless world would not make it any less worthless. It wouldn't change anything.

The trek across the sand is quiet, but when they approach the door, Kaito breaks it.

"You have the power of time travel in your grasp. The power to force history to your will."

"What do you plan on using it for? What do you plan to change?"
