Blood stained a certain alley in London.
(Ugh, I got blood on me, gross…)
The blood of the purge target I had just cut down splattered on my clothes, and though annoyed I sheathed my cane sword.
Darius: I'll leave the rest to you guys.
Vogel member: Yes, sir. Over here, guys.
The ones who were waiting behind me shuffled out and started to clean up the place.
The human I had killed today was someone who had shared information with Vogel.
That said, he had also shared that information with a different organization, and so he became a purge target…
(But I should've just left this to Ring.)
(If I did, I wouldn't have to deal with such dirty human blood on me, but alas.)
I wiped the blood I could with the handkerchief my subordinate had handed me.
Taking in the smell of that filthy blood made me want to take in Kate's scent.
(I want to go back now, bury my face in her neck and take in as much of Kate's scent as humanly possible.)
But that unbearable desire to take in the scent that made me feel most at ease brought me back.
(…To think the likes of a single mere human could change me this much.)

It wasn't as though she held some grandiose power or that she was particularly superior.
She was a human like anyone else around, and yet at some point she had become special.
And now, I was driven mad by Kate to the point I couldn't bear to think of a life without her.

Even so, it was true that I felt more happy than I ever had before,
so while putting all the blame on her, I found myself humming a tune as usual.

Just as I thought back to the time she had so rudely said before that my tone was off,
a few members came up to me all of a sudden.

As they fumbled for an explanation in light of their honesty, I gleaned a general idea of what went on.

She didn't know anything, so she probably wouldn't have imagined being left behind upon calling out to them.

Darius: I'm sure I told you to go out since Kate was coming today, did I not?
Darius: I made it clear that not even cleaners would be able to enter…so why were you guys there?
Dumbfounded member: W-we were told by him that we wouldn't run into her if we stayed in the corner of the grounds!
Dumbfounded member: He had said you gave your approval, too, so…
Darius: So? Even if you ended up believing someone else other than me, that doesn't change the fact you broke your promise.
I had an inkling on who the one they mentioned was as I sighed.
Darius: …I've got no need for humans who can't follow their orders, you know.
The members were trembling as they gauged my reaction.
Darius: But since I'm just so kind, I wouldn't dispose of you guys for something like this.

They had little time to feel relief when I once again unsheathed my blade and pointed at the ground with a full smile.

After spending some quality time together in the morning, I went to Vogel's base to help with Darius' work.

There should have been many members stationed here, but today I couldn't feel a single presence around.
Thus I was walking alone down the quiet hall, when at last I saw a figure.

The members, clad in white, were leaning against the wall as they chatted.

When I called out to them, the guys dipped their heads in a hurry before leaving in even more of a hurry.

The two's faces were blank, so I filled them in on what happened— to which Nica started guffawing.
Nica: AHAHA—! Oh god, you've got it rough, holy—!
Ring: That's too much, Nica…
Kate: This isn't anything to laugh at…I really am troubled here.
Ring, unable to continue looking at me in my current state, scratched his cheek before dropping a shocking truth.
Ring: They're not avoiding you because you did something. It was Dari who ordered it.
Ring: All of Vogel aside from me and Nica are strictly forbidden from making contact with you.
Kate: —!? But why?

When I saw the word "secret" I asked Darius casually—
Kate: Do you have a secret you can't tell me, Darius?
Darius: I've got a pile of those. But it's not like I'm going out of my way to try and hide them.
Darius: I imagine I'd have no secrets left if you heard every time who I killed, how I killed them, how they're disposed of, things like that.
Kate: Ah, that might be…
I placed an index finger on his lips and shook my head.
He gave me a "see, I told you so" look.
Whenever he delved into such topics, it was usually something that went well beyond what I expected,
so to protect my sanity, too, I mae sure not to ask much about that.
Darius: And what about you? Do you have a secret or two you can't tell me?
Kate: None. I'm always facing you with honesty.
Kate: So, I've neither lies nor secrets on me.
Darius: Is that so…
His gaze searched me, and I looked right back at him as an attempt to prove my innocence.
But then he let out a scornful laugh, letting go of the newspaper and pulling my body closer…

I was surprised how Darius went into personal information I had never once told him about before in great detail.

I covered my mouth in a panic, but I let go from surprise at my palm being kissed.

I work with kids and sometimes we have to do safety lessons with them about like, not telling strangers on the internet your home address or something. And sometimes the kids wont understand why, so you have to impart upon them that, well, some adults want to hurt children. And thats kind of difficult to do, because you have to beat around the bush, both because you dont want to scare them (while still making them understand how serious it is) and because you might lose your job if you explain it too straight forward.
Luckily, for some reason, the villain of one of the most popular franchises with children for the last 10 years happens to be a serial child murderer. So when a kid asks why they shouldnt trust strangers, instead of hand wringing and humhawing my answer out, I can just say "we dont always know when a strange adult has good intentions with children, or when they are William Afton."
from what i've observed, i do think there is some pressure for women in not explicitly feminist leftist circles to affect a kind of "cool girl" posture for the benefit of the men in the movement
someone mentioned neil gaiman in one of the replies to this and i think this is a good opportunity to remind people that there are certain kinds of predatory men (like neil gaiman) who insinuate themselves into progressive spaces by learning the “appropriate” language and social codes primarily in order to put themselves in proximity to women and other vulnerable people who view them as “safe.” i think misogyny/sexism/rape apologia in leftist spaces is much larger of an issue than just this (as there are men in those spaces who are not actively malicious but who have unexamined patriarchal outlooks that bleed into their beliefs and behavior) but i do think it’s important to point this out and to remind people to be on their guard.
Long ago, in the 80s, when everyone not watching The Cosby Show on Thursday nights was recording it and watching Magnum, P.I., they aired an episode in which the oldest girl was seeing two guys, one ordinary guy and one who went out of his way to express feminist sentiments. She was favoring the ordinary guy and Cliff was pulling for the guy with the feminist sentiments, as he was very ambitious for his oldest daughter, until Clair pulled him aside to tell him to back off and stop meddling in his daughter's life: "Did you ever stop to think that he might be a bushwhacker?" She defined a bushwhacker as someone who said all the proper feminist things until he nailed you down and then pulled the rug out from under you and started demanding his dinner and ten children.
The point was that a guy who screwed up but had honest conversations and was willing to work with you on making things work for both of you was likely to be more trustworthy than someone who talked too good a game because he'd studied up in order to manipulate; and that they needed to trust their daughter's judgement and let her live her own life, standing ready to help her if she did make a mistake in choosing a relationship.
When Cosby's crimes came to light, I couldn't help wondering whether someone in the writer's room was trying to slip a warning past the network and all the forces in the industry conniving to cover things up.
