One of my coworkers has created an open letter to JK Rowling. She has asked me to post it here in hopes that it will reach JKR.

An Open Letter To J.K Rowling: I have just finished reading the script for Harry Potter and the Curse Child. I want to start off by saying, this is not hate mail. In fact it is the exact opposite. I want to thank you for everything you’ve taught me while growing up. I am almost 25 now, and most of the life lessons I have learned can all be found in your absolutely wonderful books. But tonight, after reading the adaptation of The Cursed Child, I sit here in amazement. Amazement that after all these years you have taught me one more valuable lesson that might me the most important lesson of all.

I am someone who has suffered many counts of loss, in the form of untimely death of many young friends and acquaintances, all under the age of 30, in the short span of 4 years. Some of them to illness, some of them to suicides, but mostly to drug overdoses. I am also someone who suffers from Bipolar depression, diagnosed at the age of 17. I have seen my fair share of dark days. But as you once wrote (and is currently written on the wall in my bedroom) "Happiness can be found in even the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light.” And so I continue to fight on a daily basis to look for the light.

I have gone through the many textbook stages of grief. Bouncing through all of them over the years like a ping pong ball. But I have never been able to reach the last stage: acceptance. And tonight, after finishing the script, I think you have finally helped me reach it.

The emotional turmoil this story has put me through in the past hours is a lot, a whole 4 years worth. But without giving any of the story away, I will share with you what I have learned from the story. For past 4 years i have been asking myself and the universe “Why am I still here while my friends are not?” Tonight, you have made me realize the answer. I know and understand that pain is temporary. And sadly, my fallen friends were not as fortunate as I to understand that. But you, J.K are helping people EVERYWHERE understand that. and for that, I just want to say thank you. You’ve given me the gift of acceptance, and are giving the world the tools they need to cope with any struggle. Sincerely, Kelsey #fromKelseytoJK
