i. The Mulciber name was a daunting one to live up to, with expectations set high from the moment he was conceived. His father was a few years Tom Riddleâs senior while they were in school, one of the original members of what they called the âKnights of Walpurgisâ. Older or not, Mulciber Senior knew greatness when he saw it, and vowed back then that they would follow him to power and beyond. His mother, a Fawley, was from an equally traditional line of wizards, and was arranged to marry his father shortly after their graduating from Hogwarts. Their marriage was not a particularly happy or affectionate one, though that mattered little as it was short lived. When Nicolai was just three years old his mother was going through some of his great-grandparents things after their passing, only to accidentally touch a cursed object. She spent a long year in St. Mungos with her condition only worsening before she finally passed.
ii. Mulciber Sr. had not been a very attentive father to begin with, and after his wifeâs passing he grew ever more distant. Nic was raised mostly by a nanny and an aunt, until it came to punishment where his father took over. Thus began the root of Nicolaiâs outbursts, his temper grew violent as he began to show magical ability, and while his father punished him, that was the clearest way to get his attention. Nicolai adopted a friendship with the Avery child before his motherâs passing, and the two were as inseparable as two could be at such a young age. Every event, every play date, the two would go off together fake dueling or throwing rocks or whatever they could do to pass time. On his tenth birthday, less than a year from the day heâd be boarding the Hogwarts Express for the first time, Mulciber Sr decided it was time to start tutoring his young son. The first lessons were the hardest, as Nicolai bore the brunt of many hexes and curses without any real ability to defend himself, but the hours he spent practicing wandwork and spells, studying for hours in his fatherâs study, were some of the best memories he had with the cold man. They continued over the summers until his 5th year, when Mulciber Sr took to travelling under the request of the Dark Lord. What exactly he did on these trips Nicolai could only guess.
iii. Hogwarts was both entertaining and annoying for the young man, as he already knew what it was heâd be doing after he graduated. There was never any question, any illusion of choice for him, and for the most part he actually found some kind of comfort in the inevitable. His future dictated his friends, his classes, what he deemed worthy of his time. He had a terrible temper simmering beneath the surface which kept most people at a distance, but he had a small circle of friends that heâd grown very loyal to. Not that he wouldnât mess with them for fun, on the contrary he was very amused by getting under their skin, but outsiders would have to deal with him if they picked on one of his people. if boiled down to a sports analogy, the best way to describe Nicolaiâs outlook on life was that âthe best defense was a good offenseâ.
iv. Keeping people at a comfortable distance was Nicolaiâs specialty, so when a muggleborn girl strolled through his atmosphere he was caught off guard. It was shortly after sorting that Nicâs eyes landed on Mary Macdonald for the first time, and while the 11 year old boy couldnât put his finger on it, there was something about her that drew him to her. He kept away, sticking to boyish teasing and mockery for the first few years, but puberty really took a toll on him. Nic could still clearly remember the first time he really saw her, (a sunny afternoon on the grounds in fourth year) when he noticed the curve of her lips, the sparkle in her eyes when she laughed at what he could only assume was a horrifically corny joke, how her hair caressed her shoulders. Once noticed, it couldnât be unseen. This attraction should sicken him- he knew with every fiber of his being that she was unclean, unworthy, and she shouldnât have even been there to torment him. However it festered within him for the next two years as he slowly grew bolder, louder, and more cruel. Sure, he bothered other mudbloods for fun as well, but it was a not so hidden secret within his small circle that his attention was mostly focused on her. Â Sixth year everything came to a head and he crossed a line, one he honestly couldnât feel remorse for crossing. He had proved that she didnât hold any power over him.
v. Seventh year flew by at breakneck speed and before he knew it, he had graduated. He split his time between his fatherâs estate and a flat he rented in London and joined the Ministry as a Hit Wizard. Of course his first priority would always be the Dark Lord and his Death Eaters, but the job was actually a very good tool to keep him busy.
