Dean Winchester and “Carry On”

Ok I have ranted about this on twitter already but I need to get it out of my system:

I think part of why I’m so extremely thrown off by this finale is that of all the people I had imagined they would screw over, I never thought it would be Dean.

For years I’ve unconsciously prepared for a shitty end for Cas, for Eileen, for Charlie and the whole Wayward gang. Because, no matter how sad it might sound, that’s my experience with Supernatural. Everyone who is not Sam or Dean is to some extent disposable, and at any time we should be prepared to lose them without a proper goodbye or a satisfying ending. I just never imagined they’d get Dean too.

Dean Winchester in my mind has always been one of the two people I was certain would get to enjoy his life once everything was over. Because that’s where the show has been hinting at for years, when it’s all over they can retire and enjoy the peaceful ending they worked so hard for. I figured that, in the worst case scenario where Cas would not make it, at least Dean would get out. And I found some comfort in that.

But last night I watched his entire character arc, everything he fought for in the past 15 years, go up in smoke. Dean, who had just started to accept himself as more than just a weapon, died in the exact way he wasn’t ever supposed to. On the job, having experienced 1 or 2 weeks of true freedom at most. Dean, who by all means was supposed to grow old and have a peaceful retirement. Dean, who sacrificed everything for so many years, died in the first 20 minutes of a MOTW episode as a plot device to launch Sam into a (quite miserable) retirement. I never want to watch that scene again, I’ve been feeling sick because of it all day.

Dean Winchester, more than anyone, deserved the whole world. And I cannot believe that small chance at peace was so heartlessly taken from him.
