In 2021, mentally ill teen girls and trans kids were becoming TikTok influencers by psychologically developing "cutesy" tics on videos, like meowing and saying beetroot. They did not have tourettes, and also couldn't control the tics (but they did choose to have them). Their viewers copied them, but it eventually stopped being popular and all the girls were undiagnosed.

I’m tired.

I’m tired of you using my disorder as a quirk. I am tired of you roleplaying as anime characters for TikTok clout. I am tired of my life being treated as a joke. I am tired of self-diagnosis and enabling communities. I am tired of the excuses and the shielding and the victim blaming.

If you have a dissociative disorder: I am so sorry. I’m sorry the world was cruel. I know it’s hard. Worse than hard. I know it’s painful, day to day. I know how awful it is that the only way to survive is to simply not be there.

Self-diagnosis is not valid.

-If you use a search engine, your diagnosis is not valid. Search engines do not reflect disease prevalence in the population. You do not understand the algorithms search engines use, and will mistakenly assume that the top results are what you are most likely to have.

Search engines tell you what you want to hear.

You may be led into thinking there is more wrong with you than there actually is.

Do you have amnesia? Or is prolonged stress affecting your ability to lay down memories, due to low serotonergic activity?

Do you have an unstable sense of self? Or are you just working out your identity in the world, and how everything relates to you?

Certain syndromes MAY NOT SEEM LIKE PROBLEMS TO YOU even if they are disruptive. People with delusional disorders SOMETIMES DO NOT RECOGNISE THEY ARE DELUSIONAL, and therefore would not REPORT A PARANOID DELUSION.

CONFIRMATION BIAS is the tendency to GIVE GREATER WEIGHT to data SUPPORTING YOUR PRELIMINARY DIAGNOSIS, FAILING TO SEEK OR DISMISS CONTRADICTORY EVIDENCE.

If you THINK you have something, you are more biased to SEEK OUT INFORMATION which confirms it.

If you are vulnerable and impressionable, and continue to seek out diagnostic advice and your new ‘community’ via Tumblr and TikTok, you will now be leaving yourself vulnerable to mimicking other people’s symptoms.

There is a reason diagnosis is left to professionals. They have studied these disorders for years. They are aware of comorbidities, confounding factors, alternative diagnoses.

They can also PROVIDE CARE AND SUPPORT once your diagnosis has been identified.

DID isn’t just “alter disorder” it comes with a huge amount of severe dissociation (detachment/depersonalization/derealization) on a regular hour to hour basis, c-ptsd (flashbacks, panic attacks, severe anxiety, depression, etc) a warped view of time (or time passing), as well as a loss of time / memory (amnesia), migraines or psychosomatic pain / feelings (pnes can be comorbid), can come with symptoms of psychosis due to severe trauma, can cause catatonic dissociation, etc etc. It’s also not uncommon for systems to have comorbid / other disorders like OCD, BPD, etc.  DID isn’t just “having alters” it’s so much fucking more than just that, and I’m sick of people only thinking of the “alters” aspect and not the parts that just as hard, if not sometimes harder, to deal with.

people should really read what it means to have DID or OSDD from actual sources other than Carrds and Online Users. sit down and read papers on it that are current. sit down and read the DSM or ICD. you most likely do not have OSDD or DID. and that's something a lot of you will accept within 5 years. to actual systems who are struggling or even ones who aren't right now. i see you and i care for you. having DID isn't fun. i don't mean that in the "this is boring" way. i mean i genuinely have ruined my life by forming this disorder to protect myself as a tot. if i could not have it, not need constant treatment my whole life for it, and recover i would. but its unrealistic for me. and anyone who is happy to have DID or OSDD, you do not have it. if you're glad its protected you, you're valid. but if you use OSDDID for internet social topics, dating, making friends, advertising yourself and your trauma, or anything. i genuinely hope you see how horrible you are. and if you claim to have alters without textbook DID or claim to have it from neurodivergency or nontrauma i wish you the worst. honest to god. i genuinely hope you step on pins. i hope you fall down a flight of stairs. i hope you meet someone who is actually strugging and they tell you everything and you realise faking makes you genuine scum.

HOT TAKE!

Unrestrained and radical acceptance of experiences (AKA inclusive spaces) is dangerous.

Especially when you're dealing with people that are already prone to dissociation.

Questioning experiences is healthy for EVERYONE when it's done in a respectful way-- it's not fakeclaiming to ask questions, point out inconsistencies in symptoms, and talk about what the presentation of different disorders can look like. Finding something more fitting of your experiences is A GOOD THING.

When you just accept anything and everything at face value, you further the misunderstanding of symptoms, deepen and strengthen unhealthy habits and ideas, and encourage people to puzzle out experiences alone and without guidance.

Radical acceptance allows people to attribute their experiences and symptoms to whatever cause they want (including things that have zero basis in reality and no scientific backing). This means that they're not going to get the help they truly need.

A perfect example is BPD-- it's a disorder that can very much FEEL like you're a system. The medications and therapeutic interventions are VERY different, though, and applying the wrong treatments can be dangerous.

When someone who's really experiencing BPD says, "I'm a system!" and your response is only, "Cool! Valid! Welcome! Tell me about your alters!" you are going to, intentionally or not, cause damage to that person. If they have BPD (and only BPD, I'm not dismissing the high comorbidity rate) and you welcome them with radical acceptance into a plural space, you are encouraging them to further dissociate parts of themselves that ARE themselves-- not alters, not headmates, but their own emotions and thoughts.

Guess what, your radical acceptance has suddenly become dangerous to someone else. Good job.

why do the majority of plurals without DID-PTSD refuse to see DID-PTSD as a legitimate mental disorder? they see it & treat it like it involves the same exact plurality that they experience, except it just happens to be a little “““disordered””” 🤪 disregarding the blatant ableism there…is it srsly THAT confronting to know that people have experiences that lay outside your own?

i honestly wonder if the reason that so many plurals without DID-PTSD cling to the offensive idea that DID-PTSD is a form of plurality is so that they can continue harassing people with trauma and dissociation with terms coopted from the trans-community like sysmed, traumascum, gatekeeper. 

the only reason they’d use transmed-adjacent language is if they don’t see DID-PTSD as a legitimate disorder separate from their own non-disordered experiences. we’re all the same plurals to them, and the mean nasty DID-PTSDers are excluding plurals from their own plural-community. how terrible!!! but we’re not. it’s the people without DID-PTSD who are speaking over us and trying to change our language, our resources, our treatment, and even society’s understanding of our mental disorder. they’re discriminating against us for not wanting them to force their faith onto us and for not turning our back on science and blindly believing in the flatearth-adjacent pseudoscience that most of them are pedaling. 

alternate universes? astral projecting into other people’s bodies? spiritual possession? “giving” headmates to people so they “catch” being plural like it’s contagious? developing DID-PTSD in the womb? DID-PTSD without trauma? holy fucking shit, stop comparing all of these internet-created ideas to a medical disorder that has research, studies, and science behind it. stop discriminating against people who have this disorder.

it’s not a hate crime for people clinically diagnosed with reality issues to prefer the word of thousands of trained professionals that say DID-PTSD is a normal fucking trauma disorder over some random 30 year-old fandom mom on tumblr without DID-PTSD who thinks it’s something out of the matrix.

something i see plurals without DID-PTSD shouting a lot is that “DID-PTSD is a form of plurality!” i just want to tell them to shut up. if you have the capacity to realize that it’s insensitive and minimalizing to say “schizophrenia is a form of hallucination” and “ADHD is a form of hyperfocus” then you have the capacity to realize that talking about DID-PTSD in this same way is just as horrible.

If you think that having DID is fun or cool in any way get the fuck off of my blog. There are people who actually have that and it makes every day of their lives a living hell. Having DID isn't a quirky little thing where you can cosplay as your favourite mcyt character and make some cute little tiktok where you show off all of your "alters". It's having gone through such extreme trauma in your early childhood that your personality literally splits into fragments in order to detach yourself from what you've been through. You forget entire parts of your life and entire parts of who you are as a person.

Dissociative episodes aren't just a thing where you stare off into the camera and suddenly a new alter is smiling and introducing themselves, it's a terrifying experience that so many people suffer through.

And you know what's worse? Some people are so attached to what they see on tiktok that I'm most likely going to be labelled as ableist for calling these people out, as if they're not treating a serious condition as a quirky personality trait, debilitating those who have it in the process.

70% of people with DID have stated that they have attempted suicide because if the impact the disorder has had on them, and that's just the ones who survived. And you're making tiktoks claiming to have it and acting as though it's cute.

And whilst I'm at it, nice to see that we've also managed to revitalize the anti-recovery movement again. Spoiler alert: alter integration is what people do in therapy. It's how they recover and it's a process they go to so they have a fighting chance at living a normal life. And now its being called ableist. I am so done with this shit istfg.
