Health District Urges Measles Vaccination as Other States Continue to Report Outbreaks of the Disease
As the state of Washington declares an emergency in response to an outbreak of measles, the Southern Nevada Health District is urging everyone to ensure they and their children are appropriately immunized.
In 2018, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 17 outbreaks of measles in the United States, and the Health District reported a confirmed case of measles in a patient with a history of international travel. Measles cases in the United States can occur for several reasons, including travel to a country where vaccination rates are low and where there is spread of measles in communities with pockets of unvaccinated people.
People are considered protected from the measles if they have at least one of the following:
One or more doses of a measles-containing vaccine administered on or after the first birthday for preschool-aged children and adults who are not at-risk.
Two doses of measles-containing vaccine for school-aged children and adults at high-risk, including college students, health care personnel, and international travelers.
Measles is a highly contagious disease that can cause serious health complications, especially in young children. Measles symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, and watery eyes, followed by a rash that typically spreads from the head to the rest of the body. Measles spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. A person can get measles just by being in a room where an infected person has been. According to the CDC, approximately one in four people in the United States who get measles will require hospitalization. The best protection against measles is the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. The MMR vaccine is given to children in two doses, at 12 months and between 4 and 6 years of age. One dose of the MMR vaccine is about 93 percent effective at preventing illness. Two doses are about 97 percent effective at preventing illness.
The Health District’s Immunization Clinics provide the MMR and additional childhood vaccines. For more information call (702) 759-0850.

Early Voting Starts in Clark County on Saturday
Early voting for the general election begins Saturday at dozens of locations throughout Clark County, including traditionally popular sites at the Meadows, Boulevard and Galleria at Sunset malls, Downtown Summerlin and Centennial Center.
More than 90 early voting polling places will be open at various times through Nov. 2. A complete list and schedule of early voting sites is available through the Election Department website at www.ClarkCountyNV.gov/vote.
Voters may cast their ballot at any early voting location during the 14 days of early voting, or they may vote on Election Day, Nov. 6, at a vote center. Election Day vote centers are similar to early voting polling places in that any Clark County registered voter can cast their ballot at any vote center. New this year, vote centers are expected to make voting more convenient for voters, as there are no more assigned polling places, and voters may choose to go to a vote center close to where they work, or shop, or live.
The switch to using vote centers also allowed the County to eliminate mail-ballot districts. In previous elections, voters living in some outlying precincts were automatically sent mail ballots because they did not have a designated polling place. Now those voters are able to cast their ballots at any vote center, just like every other voter in the County. Voters in those outlying precincts who still want to vote by mail ballot may request a mail ballot. The deadline to request a mail ballot for the election is Oct. 30.
Residents are encouraged to check their voter registration status to make sure they will be able to vote in the election. To check your registration status, enter your personal information in the Registered Voter Services box on the Election Department website at www.ClarkCountyNV.gov/vote. Residents who are eligible to vote but not yet registered are encouraged to register as soon as possible. Prospective voters have until midnight Thursday, Oct. 18, through the Nevada Secretary of State’s website at www.RegisterToVoteNV.gov.
Also, the Election Department is looking for more poll workers who are fluent in Spanish and/or Tagalog to staff voting locations during early voting and/or on Election Day. Anyone interested in working at a polling place is asked to sign up by Thursday, Oct. 19, through the Election Department website at www.ClarkCountyNV.gov/Vote. Once there, log-in to the site through “Registered Voter Services” and then select “Apply to be a Poll Worker” from the dropdown menu. Those interested may also call the Election Department at (702) 455-2815.
Poll workers are paid $175 for working Election Day, and $10 per hour during early voting. To qualify to serve as a poll worker an individual must be registered to vote in Clark County, able to work long hours (about 14 hours), perform all the duties required of them on Election Day, attend a training class, and pass an evaluation. Candidates and relatives of candidates are not allowed to serve as poll workers.
