airplaine pt 2 for @yellowdragonkat
They were stuck in Greece.
She had been the one responsible for booking their tickets, planning their flight. She had jumped the gun when she saw “Rhodes Airport”as their destination- assumed it was to Rhode Island, USA… That clearly wasn’t the case. Her husband hadn’t bothered questioning her beforehand, as he had trusted her to know what she was doing.
They were stuck in Greece.
Kaiba had a meeting scheduled for the following morning in New York.
They didn’t know anyone in Greece.
Correction- they didn’t know anyone in this section of Greece. If she had at least booked them on the mainland, they’d have somewhere to go. Makrinitsa was closer to Athens than to Rhodes, and even then it was a fair distance to travel.
It was still only 16:00 EST
Kat looked at her husband who was trying to fix her mistake. He wasn’t saying anything and that scared her. She knew the man she had married wasn’t someone to sugarcoat- she knew he was upset about this, and she knew it was her fault. She had been too excited and now they were in Greece.
“No matter what we do- any flight we take would be over 18 hours.. Most are 20.”
“So you couldn’t make it… no matter what?” She had been so silent for so long, her own words came out too quick and too loud, and they startled her. Kat felt her face heating up around her cheeks and eyes, her ears had been burning for the better half of an hour now. She was so embarrassed. How could he ever trust her again?
She hated this feeling of insecurity, and disappointment in herself. She was usually able to play these feelings off and mask them with confidence, but this was different- it had been so hard to get him to trust her like this and already she was destroying everything. His silence didn’t help at all.
“A flight to Athens would be an hour- and to Germany… no there aren’t any.”
She looked over his shoulder, if she could help in any way she wanted to help.
“I’ll get us tickets to Athens- call Isono and let him know to cancel our arrangements in America.”
He was calm about the situation, and she was thankful for that.
She didn’t know how that would change.
They collected their bags from the claim and re-checked them for their next flight. He didn’t say anything further about the situation, not to her. He was on the phone- speaking in some language she didn’t understand, but assumed must have been Greek- because everyone else around them seemed to be speaking the same.
Of course her husband had to speak every language under the sun. She didn’t know why he had ever bothered to learn. She was pretty sure he had never been to Greece before.
It wasn’t until just before their flight boarded that he finally finished that call, and every moment between then had her on edge. She still didn’t feel like anything had been fixed- in the end he still wouldn’t be in New York on time or at this rate, at all.
He hung up, glanced over to her.
“I had to book last minute, and couldn’t get our seats together. Are you fine to sit alone?” This wasn’t a question, so she didn’t know how she could have answered with a “no”.
He nodded, handed over her ticket. They were in first class and it was doubtful that any of those entitled passengers would want to switch with them for any reason. They could easily switch with economy passengers, but she knew Kaiba would never be able to sit in coach.
They were priority group 1, and quick to board.
It would only be an hour without company, maybe it was for the best. She might start to feel better if she could focus on something else- or so she had thought. Music wasn’t much. She calmed down some- but every time she looked over at him, busy at his laptop, she felt guilty. He would have to work harder just to make up for the work he’d be missing.
She huffed, leaned her face into her palm, this was going to be a very long flight.
They were landed, their luggage collected. Kaiba had pre-arranged a cab to come pick them up after their flight, but the trip to Makrinitsa would be another 3.5 hours should they take it immediately.
She had assumed they would.
Kaiba spoke again in Greek, and she settled into the back seat for their ride. She had expected him to sit up front with the driver, when he opened the back door on the passenger's side, she wasn’t expecting it.
He sat across from her with no attempts to avoid eye contact.
She stared out the window instead.
Athens in the night time it was gorgeous. She wished they could have been here under different circumstances. She knew they would be leaving in the morning, and it was likely already too late to convince her husband to do anything.
They were dropped off at a beach hotel, it seemed busy even at this hour.
She was content to collapse after she had dropped her bags at the door to their room. She was stressed and wanted to forget about everything.
She noticed, however, that rather than getting ready to shower, Kaiba was dressing up. He had washed his face already, and when he went to the bathroom she had expected him to be showering, but he came out with brushed hair and fresh clothing.
She knew her husband well and it was far past his bedtime.
“What are you doing..?” She hated the thought of it, but she had a suspicion that he intended to have a video conference in place of the meeting they would be missing.
“Going out- get dressed.”
He didn’t have to tell her twice. As travel weary as she was, she still had the heart of an adventurer. If now was her only chance to explore the city, she was taking it. Although it was so late, and any street in any country became dangerous at hours like these, she knew how to handle herself and so did Kaiba.
She was suddenly excited.
She nearly fell over in her rush to dig up the nice clothes she had in her suitcase.
If this was a date night, she had to be at least as well dressed as he was- any other night she would happily wear mismatching street apparel next to his designer suits.
He held her hand under the city lights, relaxed and more alright with this than she thought he would have been. He said nothing still, but she could feel a whisper of his heartbeat through the palm of his hand and she knew he wasn’t upset. She was elated.
All that worry was for nothing.
She watched the streets with wide eyes, excited for the new surroundings. She didn’t notice his eyes on her, but she rarely ever did. She wasn’t on her toes with him, didn’t fear letting her guard down, this made it easier for him to admire her without question.
There were many businesses still open, most restaurants or bars, nothing for souvenirs but they could always get something at the airport.
He led her in, off the streets, to a rooftop bar.
The sun had long since set, and they likely wouldn’t be there long enough to see it rise, but they could at least admire the scenery against the night sky.
He ordered for them, he knew what she liked, and she didn’t know the language it wasn’t difficult. He ordered a bottle of wine for their meal.
They sat at the edge of the rooftop and enjoyed their meal together. She didn’t miss her chance to apologise for her mistake, and he forgave her immediately.
“I think this was more important,” he spoke with a subtle smile- one she caught in a moment. She knew every bit of his face, they had been together for so long now, she knew exactly how the wrinkles on his face formed for his smile, exactly which order they appeared in. They were domestic, and she felt sappy. She couldn’t recall the face she had been making before, but she was beaming now.
As they finished their meals, his hand reached across the table to hers, his eyes were focused on the skyline of Athens. She took a sip of her wine and thought of kissing him. Not now, not yet. She knew those eyes, and she knew his mind was somewhere else. She was content to study his already familiar face until he came back.
They sat there in silence, her glass empty, his still filled halfway. The tables around them were loud, music played almost forgotten in the background and Kat felt this moment was peaceful.
He turned back to her, lifted her hand only to kiss the back of it.
Her smile couldn’t grow any larger, so she only leaned in to kiss him. He was glad to accept.
They paid their bill- walked back to their hotel.
Kaiba stopped them short of the lobby, he looked toward the beach, and again to his wife.
He pulled her toward the sand. The wind was gentle and the tide was calm. He was dressed too well for the water, and that might have stopped him if he was with anyone else. He shrugged his coat off and dumped it into the sand.
“Oh, but wasn’t that designer?”
He shook his head and laughed alongside her.
They took off their shoes, and Kaiba would have liked to say he had the intelligence to roll his pants up, but he didn’t.
The wet fabric clung to his ankles as they kicked up the water. Although he was feeling playful, watching her splash around- he didn’t want to miss his chance to dance with her under the moon and under the sunrise.
It was already early morning.
She turned away from him, bent over to pick up a broken shell. He splashed water at her back, and when she turned around for revenge, he had his arm around her. His other hand was free for her to accept. He wasn’t very good at the tango, but there was no music, and they could set their own pace.
She tried to stop her giggling, only to wind up with a snort.
It was difficult for her to keep him from tripping. He was better at the waltz, and he probably should have stuck with it.
By the time the sun rose at 6:07 they were both thoroughly soaked through to the bone, laughing and struggling to keep their balance. By 6:11 Kat finally let Kaiba fall for his missteps, only to be dragged along with him. She had let go of him, but he had not let go of her. Her hair had been at least a little dry before this, but not anymore.
She flung both of her arms around his neck, pushed his back into the sand, his head closer to shore. “Thank you for tonight, even if you did ruin my clothes.”
“I’m sorry.., we should get them off of you, shouldn’t we?”
She snorted and splashed water into his face.
He laughed warmly. “I was about to say the same- I love you.”
