I'm Russia at the HRC, and our agenda is "Internal Displacement is the Middle East" What should I speak in the GSL speech? It's my first MUN, I just want a basic idea. Thank you!

Policy and what Russia's position on it and what you, Russia, have don on tis matter. You can mention an idea or two but mainly get policy out there first.

I'm going to be the first at my school next year to start a Model United Nations club, do you have any tips for getting started and if it's not too much, getting people interested?

Getting people interested is simple, just be honest about how fun MUN can be. Literally it was the best part of high school for me personally. But when setting up your club i would recommend a strong leadership team. That is supper important. It is also important the your team is not inwardly competitive because that does not unify you guys and can actually hurts you more that you think.

Speaking in Model UN: Some Basic Guidelines

OK, so every one has done speaking, so we decided we would…do that too. (Haha) We wanted to go over some general speaking rules for MUN.

Don’t speak in 1st person. You are no you, you are your county or whatever position you are representing. Start with (this is an example) “The delegation of France believes …”

Keep your placard up until you are called THEN PUT IT DOWN!!!!!! We can’t stress how important this is. If you have spoken once in this moderated, the Chair wont call on you again! It also looks really obnoxious when you do that

Be a little relaxed when you are speaking. NEVER memorize anything. (Ok for your 1st speakers list it a good idea to go up with a set of points you want to address and its always nice when you go up for a moderated to have a few key points you want to get across written down) Also, don’t read off a piece of paper.

Keep your body language in check. Don’t slump over the podium if there is one. Stand up tall and proud. Hey! You own the room, act like it!

Speak loudly and clearly. Attempt to wake up the people sitting in the back. Sometimes there is a mike sometimes there isn't so be prepared for there not to be one

Always say something substantive and think it over for a moment before speaking. You don’t always have to be the first person to speak.

Unless you haven’t spoken in the moderated caucus, it’s never a good idea to extend it. The Chair won’t call on you if you have spoken already

When you speak, try to be friendly. Yes, we all understand very well that every one is secretly plotting the demise of ever other person, but people will like you better if you’re more genuine

Speaking in a Regional Body

Since every one else here is doing speaking, we through we would to! To be quite honest, in a regional, since it’s an intermediate committee, the speaking is a mix between a GA and a JCC. You have more speaking opportunities than in a GA, but not as many in a JCC. You still have to be careful about what you say, because in a Regional, most counties/ delegates/ people will think in a similar fashion and will have similar ideas. This is good and bad. It’s good if you have done your research because you will have an easier time finding an alliance and getting with a good group of people. Its bad if you haven’t done your research and out make stuff up because people will call you out on it. But we know any one reading this will always do their research. What’s more important here then speaking in the front is working in the back to get people on your side and working with them. We’re going to go more into that next week.

Speaking in a JCC

 Hey guys, because I’ve been busy this week I’ve decided to copy what the USA and Czech did their series on for this week, speaking. JCCs are less people than in a GA, (munch less), getting an opportunity to speak is a lot easier. Always have your placard up, unless you just speak, then pout it down. You can raise it again after that. JCCs require more on your feet thinking, so try to think of ideas thoroughly before you share them. To be quite honest though, JCCs are all about speaking. The more you talk the better you will do because of the amount of people. There are less blocs here than in a GA, so its easier to collaborate on ideas, and you can build off what other people are saying here.

Speaking in GAs

We decided to go over one of the most important things in a GA, SPEAKING!!!! For the love of god, always have your placard up, unless you have just spoken. This is considered rude and is just inviting the chair to hate you. When they are taking names for a moderated, keep your placard up. Also, don’t extend a moderated if you have speaking in it because the char will definitely not call on you during the extending if you spoke earlier in the same moderated. It’s a good practice to always get a new one and try to be the first speaker so you can lead the debate into an area that’s favorable for you. One thing that helps in this case is if you are a smaller country. Smaller countries tend to be less opinionated in real life, so by speaking up, it gives a good impression yo your chair.

            When you do go up to the front of the room, try to say something substantive. Don’t waist one of your precious speaking opportunities. Don’t just say to agree with some one and leave it at that. Try to contribute your own ideas and thoughts in the matter to the debate. This shows you aren’t just memorizing stuff or not consciously thinking. Don’t be that delegate that memorizes things; try to be a bit freer and relaxed about it. Mini-UN, a model for Ukraine

Seperate Ukraine into Major decisions.

-Western Ukraine -Eastern Ukraine Etc.

Run it like the UN Each region gets VETO power for pan-Ukrainian policies.

Regions can determine regional policy, such as Western Ukraine joining the EU, and Eastern joining an Eastern European Union of sorts, etc.

Get rid of the executive branch. The Representative mini-UN becomes the Executive branch.

The PEOPLE become the Legislative branch.

This is a really good JCC idea. You could have a 4 way JCC with Eastern Ukraine, Western Ukraine, an EU, and Russia as separate committees or something like that.
