When Chrissy and Eddie get closer to toeing the line into actually dating but they’re still like “Omg do they like me like I like them🤪” Wayne sees right through them.
He’s constantly hassling Eddie about it “She’s not gonna wait around for you forever, get a move on!”, “She dumped that blonde jock weeks ago! Why else would she if it wasn’t cause she had her eye on someone else?”, “Eddie, girls don’t buy sentimental gifts for boys they don’t have sentimental feelings about”, “Eddie, you two’ve run up my damn phone bill arguing over who has to hang up first, of course she likes you!” But the whole time Eddie’s just like nah no she wouldn’t she’s chrissy cunningham she’s too good for me.
On the night of Eddie’s birthday, uncle Wayne bought a cake and Chrissy stopped by for dinner and to bring her present. They talk and laugh and play card games and the night is going great. Eventually it gets late enough that Wayne has to pack up and head to the plant. Eddie is in the restroom as the older man steps out about to leave. He looks back at Chrissy, so tiny on their already small couch, and says softly.
“You know, my boy is in love with you.” And she just squeaks and stares at him wide eyed. He sends her a warm smile and says, “He acts tough, peacocks around, but beneath all of that he’s…well he’s soft. His daddy, my brother, really did a number on him when he was young, and this town ain’t no help. He’s got some idea that you couldn’t possibly have those feelings back cause you’re too good for him. Now he’s probably right that you’re too good for him, but I see the way you look at him. And If the way you look at him has anything to do with how you feel about him, then maybe just give him some time.”
She’s blushing madly, but replies “He’s so silly. Any girl on this planet should be so lucky to have him, he’s very special.”
That makes Wayne smile even stronger and he’s about to head out again but stops on the top step and turns around one more time, “Chrissy,” she looks up from her fiddling fingers, “Thank you. For seeing him for what he is, for seeing him beyond what this town sees.”
“This town is stupid.” She’s only half teasing.
“You’re right there, girl” he responds right as Eddie comes down the hallway.
“You out of here, Wayne?” He asks.
“Yep. Happy birthday, boy. You two have fun, not too much though.” He gives the pair a faux stern look and as he’s on his way down the stairs he shouts behind him “Maybe you can stay up and tell each other some secrets!”
And he was happy to later find out they heeded his advice. Years from now he’ll be happy to gloat about it at their wedding.
