The work of poet Sappho has long been considered one of the earliest, finest examples of ancient Greek literature. She was born around 630 BC in Lesbos. Acclaimed during antiquity, her poetry was dedicated to her love for other women, and collections of her work were kept in libraries and schools all around the Mediterranean. Later, however, when morality changed, the poems of Sappho were banned and her books destroyed, and only a few fragments were preserved in ancient dumps and catacombs. One of these poems, dedicated to her female lover Atthis, has been reconstructed from six fragments. It is a beautiful love letter which ends with the phrase: "Someone, I tell you, will remember us, even in another time". More than two millennia after her death, we still remember Sappho and pay tribute to her in our daily life, as the name of her birthplace, Lesbos, is the origin of the word lesbian.
