The Defenders
Luke Cage: From now on, we are using codenames. You can address me as eagle one. Jessica is been there, done that
Jessica: ...
Luke Cage: Claire is currently doing that
Claire Temple: *high fives Luke*
Luke Cage: Misty is it happened once, in a dream
Misty: *winks*
Luke Cage: Danny is if I had to pick a dude
Danny: *smiles*
Luke Cage: and Matt is. . . eagle two.
Matt: Oh thank god.
Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter and Finn Jones in Entertainment Weeklyās first look at THE DEFENDERS
Matt scolded himself internally for wondering where today was going to go wrong earlier, as spectacularly it has been going before. It was one thing to have a bad client, or a rude prosecutor, or any number of other things so wrong, scalding coffee was pretty terrible. It seeped into his shirt and warmed his skin, and it was uncomfortable and dripping down his front. Heād have to run the few blocks home before his meeting with yet another client. Maybe he should start leaving spare suits at the office, now that he didnāt have anyone to run out to get coffee. It was a thought.
āItās⦠itās fine. Really.ā Matt almost laughed, though he was a bit relieved to find the manās apology was genuine. He didnāt even so much mind him shoving him inside and away from the door, and he hobbled towards the condiment table to dab at his shirt with napkins. And his now-sticky cane. And he just threw the remnants of his coffee and Danish away. Sadly. āItās fine, really. I think Iāll live. Iām not doctor, but the prognosis is pretty positive. And the face is still in tact, which means my charm still works. That's the important part.ā
His cane folded up easily, and Matt slipped it into the inside front pocket of his jacket, the weight comfortable against his shirt. āGood kidā might have been an understatement, and humble to boot. He smiled a little, genuine and soft, inviting.
āIām sure he does. Itās as much the quality of the food as it is Stan, and there arenāt many vendors as generous as he is, if youāre the right kind of person. Heāll either give you the shirt off his back, or a kick in the ass.ā He tried not to laugh at the sound of the superās shrug, even though the habit was a bit hilarious to him. It took Foggy years to realize all the little things.
āThatās good. I mean, Iām sure you felt it was only right, but⦠too many people in this city turn cheek. Itās always good to see someone doing some real good here.ā Matt cocked his head towards the window, listening to Stan cook. āHave you already paid?ā He hadnāt met much as far as the other heroes looking out for New York. He could always repay their hard work, even if it wasnāt in costume.

A dear friend had once told Steve that when being undercover, you walk and donāt run. Steve was currently running, ignoring that dear friendās advice but then again he had never been very good at following orders. Plus he had a reason to run, a damned good reason. Good enough that he was willing to risk being caught out in the open.
āGet away from her,ā Steve yelled at the gang that were circling a young girl. The girl curled up, her arms over her head in an effort to protect herself from the gang. A couple of the gang broke away and ran off but three of them stayed. One looked directly at Steve while the others continued to kick and punch at the girl.
Steve reached them and grabbed one of the kids by the shoulder. He pulled the kid away from the girl and threw him to the ground. The girl remained where she was, frozen with fear. Steve shoved the other kicking kid away from her and confronted the one who stared at him.Ā āI said get away from her.ā Steve stood between the remaining gang member and the girl, shielding her with his own body.Ā āDonāt make me repeat myself again, kid. Walk away. Now.ā
Patrolling the outskirts of Hellās Kitchen yielded him to sounds that extended beyond the piece of New York he claimed under his own protection. It afforded him a nice bit of cardio, however, and he skirted across rooftops and whipped his way over roadways to approach the sounds of a fight. One that didnāt seem to be in favor of one particular victim.
He heard the voice before he made his way down into an adjacent alley, heading off the young men running from the scene. Some sprinted passed him, one raised his fist and was unconscious on the ground in the same breath, and the devil headed towards the scene of the crime. He was not surprised to find the frightened heartbeat of the girl, whimpering on the ground, or her assailant a few feet away, a chord of terror striking his own heart. He was, however, surprised by a third heartbeat, a more defiant sound, coupled with a strength that was foreign. There were very few people this could be.
āI donāt think that was a suggestion.ā The devil sneered, extending his billy club to a staff height. He twirled it, showing off just a bit. āBased on the number of buddies of yours I passed, Iād say two on one is fair play. So please, by all means, stick around and see how you fair. It wonāt be a cheap hospital ticket, thatās for sure.ā
āA hello doesnāt stop someone from trying to kill you, and I donāt know if you want to kill me yet. So, consider me suspicious.ā Jessica crossed her arms loosely. She was wearing her new costume, a great upgrade from her cringe-worthy old one. She walked closer to the hero, and inspected him for a moment.Ā
āExcellent deduction, Watson. I donāt kill people, though, so⦠a bit flawed.ā The devil quipped back, sliding up from his seated position. She smelled new as she slipped closer, and he recognized the smell of new fabric, clean and free from debris. āNot that you donāt have reason to be. Still, must not be hip on all the New York gossip. Devil only in name.ā He cocked a smirk at that.
It was the smell and the stale taste of metal hit his senses before he had a chance to speak again, strong enough that he almost gagged. Heād forgotten about the cybernetics that plagued the mutant, though being a defining characteristic, he couldnāt think of why he had. Particularly with such a strong reaction on his part.
āAs many seem to be these days.ā He concentrated on the manās calming heartbeat, aware of how he was working to steady himself. āPunctuality is still important. Good to know Iām not the only one holding that thought.ā The devil sighed, his own arms moving to cross over his chest. It was hard to know who to trust, and the Accords only made it harder. āIām making sure neither of us is wasting his time. The X-men claimed neutrality, that doesnāt mean mutants outside their group havenāt.ā He pointed out, his arms dropping from their crossed position over his chest. Neither might he forthcoming about who they were, but individuals had their own thoughts on the Accords. Including Cable. āIf thatās not what this is aboutā¦ā
