Lily Kamper

After graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2012, Lily Kamper founded her London based jewellery label, creating pieces that reflect her love of unusual material combinations and designs that embody modern luxury.

Botanical Layers

Masha Reva is a young fashion designer from Ukrain. For her first collaboration with the ukrainian brand Syndicate, she designed a collection of printed sweatshirts, in limited edition, inspired from natural and technological graphic elements. Sandra Backlund

Sandra Backlund is a swedish fashion designer specialized in knitting. She founded her company in 2004, just after graduating from Beckman School of Design in Stockholm.

Sandra aims to find a perfect balance between tradition and modernism. She prefers to improvise, rather than sketching a plan or limiting herself to a set theme. Each piece is hand knitted with total freedom. With an approach very close to sculpture, she concentrates on the material and technical aspects of knitting and manages to elaborate   complex shapes, as beautiful as they are innovative.

KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE WALL

A little over ten years ago, the Israeli state began erecting the Separation Wall. Since then, Palestinians’ lives have vastly deteriorated, international border laws have been constantly violated and free movement has been refused to the whole population, intensifying suspicion, hatred and bitterness between Israelis and Palestinians, who were already profoundly isolated from one another.

Keep Your Eye on the Wall is iabout singling out the wall, but in unexpected ways. It wishes to decipher the wall, get round it, even shift it, imparting it with another presence in order to resist it. We are convinced that aesthetic actions can lead to new forms of political subjectivity.

In order to achieve this, we offer the gaze of seven photographers - six Palestinians and a German - who develop a new vision of the wall. This vision transcends the wall’s simple physical presence to explore the multiplicity of its meanings and to sharply question the economic, social and cultural consequences of its existence.

Each of the works presented here shows us the fierce stubbornness of people who are determined not to let the wall take over their lives."

Viktor & Rolf SS2010RTW

Famous for their high concept catwalk shows and extravagant collections, the Dutch designers Viktor & Rolf use fashion as a medium of art first. Here are a few of my favorite photos of their SS2010 Ready to Wear collection, "Cutting Edge Couture", designed in reference to 2009's harsh economy :

Jim Naughten

Conflict and Costume features Jim Naughten’s stunning portraits of Herero tribe members wearing colorful costumes. Against the pale Namibian desert, the result is striking. Under the influence of German missionaries and traders of the late 19th century, the Hereros of Namibia were bound to ad Victorian and paramilitary fashion in their traditional costumes, however managing to preserve their own identity.

« The style of dress was introduced during the German/Herero conflict in the early 20th century, when nearly 80 percent of the Herero population was wiped out. Though the attire was originally forced upon the Herero people, it has since become a tradition and point of pride. “If a warrior killed a German soldier he would take and wear their uniform as a badge of honor, and to ‘take’ or appropriate their power” (Jim Naughten). »
