Kanye West - All Falls Down

Kanye speaks here on the concept of money being the root of all evil. How society pushes us all to idolise riches and the things that come with them, so much so that we end up losing ourselves trying to obtain lifestyles that don’t really exist. He then goes deeper and begins to speak on why it is he believes a lot of black males and females feel a need to “floss” and stand out from the crowd. Black people have been put down and degraded in society for years, Kanye believes that now is his time to regain black people’s pride and show society how great the culture is. But in his last bars he continues the internal conflict as he says, “even if you in a Benz you still a nigga, in a coop.” This is how Kanye believes the majority of society still sees black people in this world and the reason for Kanye’s conflict is that he believes no matter how far he goes, no matter how great he is, he will still be looked down on for being a black male. Truly amazing passion shown here, Kanye is a true artist and his music has always been an inspiration for my soul and many others.

L’orange is a hip-hop producer that every purist of the genre should stand up and pay attention to. A true artist who portrays his shadow like image on to every track he touches, coming equipped with 1950′s jazz and soul samples which will throw you years back to the vinyl ages of hip-hop. When I first came across L’orange the first thing I noted was his rare taste for great samples, from eerie female vocals to psychedelic radio cuts, he uses in a way which adds to the cinematic effect of his projects. One of his projects that really touched me was “Old Soul”, in which he uses Billie Holiday as his muse and looks to portray significant parts of her life through every track. He is a truly amazing producer and the level of passion and inspiration that he has is rare, I highly recommend giving his discography a listen. An artist that will ignite a fire in your soul for sure.

A truly sad but beautiful verse from the UK Hip Hop Heavyweight Loyle Carner. His lyricism is amazing and he has a storytelling ability on the level of some of hip-hop’s greatest, a true gem. The track is from Rejjie Snow’s EP “Rejovich” so go check that out, some great music for the soul.

Monsta Island Czars

A little throwback for the underground hip hop fans here. The Monsta Island Czars were a hip hop collective consisting of the artists: MF Doom, MF Grimm, King Caesar, Megalon, Rodan, KD, Raylong and Kong. Based in New York City the group released their first album “Escape from Monsta Island!” in 2003 and it is one of the most understated hip hop classics of our generation. The whole album is definitely worth a listen, it uses an experimental sample style that creates an almost, overwhelming, but entrancing super hero versus super villain atmosphere to the album. My personal favourite track from the album is called M.I.N.Y.A, the group rides the gritty urban instrumental with wizardry and it BUMPS. Go check that out, some great music for the soul.

Tiny Desk Concert

NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert delivers intimate showcases of live performances by many different talented artists such as: Anderson Paak, Lianne La Havas, The Internet, Adele, The Robert Glasper Experiment, Gucci Mane, Rafael Saadiq, Leon Bridges and many more. Regardless of what genre of music you are in to there is always a level of appreciation that must be given for the talent it takes to pull off a live performance, but the artists on Tiny Desk always go well and truly beyond just pulling it off. Imagine the artists are placed in a small office setting with a realistic aesthetic and they then perform, COMPLETELY LIVE, behind a desk. As the current wave of electronic music and digital production continues to trend and takeover it is amazing to see artists who are still committed to keeping the soul of live performance alive. I would highly recommend listening to the performance that Tank and The Bangas did for Tiny Desk, if you did not already know they are a funk and soul music group from New Orleans who aim to portray a lot of powerful messages in their songs through the beautiful songwriting (and also spoken word) of lead vocalist Tarriona “Tank” Ball. The performance that they did for the Tiny Desk Contest 2017 was unbelievable and led to them winning the contest via a unanimous decision. Definitely worth checking out, some great music for the soul.
