Lilly James

Click, clack, click, clack.
The only sound that Lilly J could hear as she sat in the opening of the train car as it moved down the tracks. The crisp spring air hit her face, stinging her skin as she watched the once barren trees now blossoming with green leaves pass her by. She figured she was somewhere around Boston or perhaps Pennsylvania. She honestly didn't care. She didn't care much these days where she went as long as it was away from people and alone. Her once-long black hair was now short, with a soft purple streak through it, and the old headphones she'd had for years were around her neck. The old leather jacket that has seen better days clung to her form, smaller now. Food was hard to come by, people were a lot less kind to share anything, and the last time she'd tried to make any money, she got the shit beat out of her. It's been at least 2 days since she last ate. And the pain in her stomach was unmatched to the black eye she was now sporting.
This was life, and she was alone once again, having been abandoned by someone she'd let herself catch feelings for. First, it had been Morgan, or pretty boy as she called him. Some rich shit head who couldn't stand Mommy and Daddy for whatever reason and figured selling himself was better than going to school, and then Vinnie. God, even thinking about that blonde-haired shit made Lilly's blood boil. Waking up to find out he'd not only left but had taken any money they'd made and left no trace of himself. Lilly cursed his name and hoped he was living in a gutter somewhere with his throat cut. That fucker had caused her more heartache and a medical procedure that Lilly never imagined she'd ever get, but what life could a baby have out on the streets? That shit was irresponsible; abortion was the solution.
"Never Again," Lilly thought. And she meant it; she was done catching feelings, she was done being nice, she was done helping anyone, and from here on out, it was just survival for herself. Fuck everyone. Lying her head back against the doorway, she sighed to herself. She hated to admit how nice it was to really be traveling with someone, to have someone to watch her back, keep each other warm, and to just talk to, but no more. No more ever again. But she would miss Mister Donovan and his wife. It was warm in their home, the food was good, and it was nice to have a warm bed and hot food. But they were rock stars, what would they want with a twenty-year-old degenerate with no education and who could barely read a poster board advertisement, let alone a fucking book. Lilly hadn't felt this hopeless since Jimmy was dead. God, Jimmy, he would hate what her life had become, he'd hate what she'd done and how she stole to survive, not selling herself because that will never happen, but stealing to survive, like she stole the jacket she wore and the headphones around her neck and her walkman in her bag with the single mix tape still inside that her brother had made when she was just a little kid.
Sucking in some of the cold air to keep the tears from her eyes, she closed her eyes and just let the sound of the train lull her to a comfortable place. Lilly wasn't sure why she kept going, why she kept moving, why she even bothered trying. Maybe deep down she was stupidly hopeful she'd find a real life, a place in this world where she could find a future that didn't involve running hustles and getting her ass kicked, starving and stealing what she couldn't afford. That was no way to live. Fuck everyone and everything, she'd make her own way, she'd find a future herself, and she didn't need anyone to do it for her. Lilly knew she'd survive; she wanted a life, perhaps in Florida? It was warm there, and there were a lot of stupid tourists to relieve of their vacation money before they made their way to Disney World. Hell, perhaps she'd even go to Disney World herself; she always wanted to meet Mickey Mouse. Maybe she could work as a Disney Princess....
The thought made Lilly laugh out loud, her a Disney Princess... yeah, that will be the day when Hell freezes over. It was cold enough; maybe hell was freezing over. Shivering Lilly pulled her thin leather coat around her small body and moved out of the open doorway not shutting it, she liked seeing where she was but she moved further in to avoid the cold and just leaned against a couple of crates her head resting against a big one that said 'SONY' on it. She was thinking of popping a couple of these suckers open and selling what she found inside; maybe she'd be able to get a hotel room for the night, maybe a meal. Besides, these rich ass companies could claim them on their insurance and wouldn't be fazed by it at all. "Later," She thought, yawning and settling back against the crates, and continued to watch the train move past the scenery. It was getting darker now; soon it would be night. In the morning, she'd disembark and figure out what to do from there.
Sleep was the only solution to the hunger knawing at her stomach anyway. So she was going to try to sleep now. Not deeply because if she got caught, she'd be fucked, but just enough so she wouldn't feel the hunger and not be exhausted in case she did have to dash. She always had a plan, and she'd always survive.
"I miss you, Jimmy," Lilly thought as sleep began to take hold. "I'm sorry I didn't become what you wanted for me..."
