M4TB’s Hall Of Fame: Morbid Angel - Altars Of Madness
You know that some characteristics of Death Metal are the brutal force it unleashes, and its character which is violent and proud. These characteristics are two of the hallmarks of Death Metal. Well, then came Morbid Angel with their debut album, the unholy but mighty “Altars Of Madness”, to take extreme music into a whole new level. Morbid Angel were blessed by the co-existence of a very talented guitarist (Tray Azagthoth) and an amazing drummer (Pete Sandoval) among their classes, and this gave them a huge advantage since their compositions were technically very demanding, but also Death Metal to their core and all these together helped setting up the foundations of what we called Tampa Bay Death Metal! Yes, Altars Of Madness is a milestone album not only for Death Metal but also for music in general since the album affected many bands of the genre, but also influenced other genres to evolve both technically and musically and not only in the US, but mainly in northern Europe. Let’s not forget that even we (who were lucky enough to witness Death Metal from its birth up to today) used “Atlars” as a golden standard for the American Death Metal when we talked about music and bands and albums, and truth be told this album was a “pacemaker” for the whole Death Metal scene worldwide!
Well Morbid Angel had a very special line up at the time: Tray Azagthoth – Guitars, Pete Sandoval – Drums, David Vincent – bass & Vocals, and Richard Brunelle – guitars. It is very easy to understand that these guys would play technical… Sometimes too technical, especially for the time that the album was released, when this music was at its pristine state. The complexity of Azagthoth’s compositions were demanding, and although this became more obvious in “Blessed Are The Sick” album, the founding characteristics of his songwriting are all here, expanding and affecting people though-out the whole world. So yes, another aspect that places “Altars” in the Hall Of Fame is the fact that it opened a new era for a more technical aspect/ view on the extreme sound, and this led to musical evolution not only for Death Metal (which at the time was really new, and well it was still evolving) but also for Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, and music in general.
I remember that when I bought the album I was really curious as to what I was about to hear! Don’t forget that at the time Death was the heaviest or more extreme you could possibly hear (ok Carcass & Napalm Death were also too extreme, but at the time it was difficult to find their music (I really miss the tape trading years!). So I remember there was a guy that had given me a tape with some demos and there were two songs from Morbid Angel‘s “abomination of desolation” demo/ recording. I think it was “Chapel Of Ghouls” and “Angel Of Disease” and I was amazed of how these songs sounded to my ears… So when I bought the album (2nd or 3rd day from its release) I was excited as to what I was about to hear. And well, I thought I had high expectations, but this blew my mind away. For months I was listening to the album, consumed to its force and nature, in various conversations with other metallheads and other friends listening to Metal I was busting their balls as to how amazing this album was, how nothing can compete with it at the time, and how it destroyed everything in its path… Well trust me very few albums had made this to me, really few, and such albums are very rare, especially in our times. I remember the two last times I got the same feeling from hearing an album of such caliber, ok the one is really recent with DSKNT’s “Phosphor Entropy”, and the other was back in 2010 when I heard “Paracletus” from Deathspell Omega!
The album opens with a classic Death Metal anthem, the infamous “Immortal Rites” and you soon get an idea of what is to follow. Mid-tempo and heavy rhythm sets the backbone of the song, Vincent’s vocals are haunting and I know everyone is familiar with the line “gathered for a sacred rite, subconscious minds allied, call upon immortals, call upon the oldest ones to intercede”! A Death Metal anthem and an instant classic. The song continues to a faster rhythm towards the chorus, and then it drowns us within the mist and into the pit of madness…
“Suffocation” takes over and the tempo gets faster, the true nature of what came to be known as “Tampa Bay Death Metal” is revealed in this masterpiece. The break towards the end and Vincent’s bass downward spiral is fucking amazing! The album is just getting warmed up, “Visions from the dark side” display what came to be the classic riffing in Death Metal, and the song just twist your mind around only for you to bow down to the next anthem, the mighty “Maze of torment”. Ok what can be said for this song, classic Death Metal at its best, performed by the best. Side A closes with another classic “Lord of all fevers & plagues”. So, just to clarify, up until now, we have an album that for side A has already given us pure Death Metal of the highest level, with 5 anthems following one another. Oh yes, there is more!
Side B opens with “Chapel of ghouls” and what gets in your mind is the atmosphere the keyboards create with the riffing of Azagthoth, and when the guitar solo falls onto them…. A M A Z I N G! Then the tempo falls even more, heavy rhythm all the way, until the song regains its initial tempo. “Bleed For The Devil”, an Armageddon that blasts your ears and of course your neck from the never ending head-banging. “Damnation” is just another classic anthem, which is how to say it…. Mesmerizing? Even in live performances “Damnation” is like a “hit” among the crowd! The truth is that the melody of its riff embeds in your mind and will torment you for days trying to stop whispering it, or trying to ignore it… “Blasphemy” follows. Classic Death Metal mayhem for 3 and a half minutes, and of course the structure of the song is an excellent example of Death Metal song writing at the time. “Altars Of Madness” closes with another anthem “Evil Spells”. Massive riffing, massive vocals, to be honest, everything is massive not only in the song, but also in the album. So… You get the point… An album that not only doesn’t have any fillers, but on the contrary every single one of its songs wrote its own history in Death Metal…
Honestly I believe that the destructive force of the album was not so obvious in the USA initially, but it was a game changer elsewhere, especially in Europe, where in Sweden “Altars Of Madness” changed the whole music scene. I have read that Swedish extreme music is categorized into two eras, the one before “Altars” and the other after the release. Now imagine that the driving force of a scene with tradition in Death Metal, a scene that gave us “Left Hand Path”, “Like An Ever Flowing Stream”, “Into the grave”, and many more Hall of Fame albums used “Altars Of Madness” as a torch, as an eye opener, so even to the naïve or even to those who do not listen to Death Metal, the impact factor of this album to the extreme sound is immense. Simple perfection, that set the bar too high, and almost made the thrash scene extinct in the north of Europe. Personally, one out of my top ten albums of all time.
I have to mention the cover from Mister Danny Seagrave, who made it, and represents a soul consuming disc. This was Danny’s first Death Metal album cover, with many more to follow. The album was recorded in what later came to be the “legendary” Morrisound Recording Studios, and the album was released on May 12 1989, by Earache.
What else is there to say about an album that took music into a whole new level, than just open your ears and listen to it!
Bow down to the Morbid one!
M4TB’s Hall Of Fame: Slayer - Reign In Blood
The year is 1986, and the Thrash Metal scene is gaining more and more popularity and is becoming known as it has opened its wings and now the attack is generalized as American bands are bombing our ears with their albums and their fellows and allies from Europe (e.g. Kreator, Sodom etc), commenced their offensive with amazing albums, making Thrash a recognizable genre of the extreme music, and at the time the most extreme genre known. And then came Slayer to change all things about Thrash, about Metal, and show the world what aggression, speed, and precision is all about. Their achievement? Probably the best Thrash album of all times, the album that redefined the sound of the extreme, the album that broadened the musical horizon, and open the gates for other genres to be born…. Ladies & Gentlemen, behold “Reign In Blood”!
On the 7th of October 1986 “Reign In Blood” was released, and everything changed. Slayer had achieved something unique. They managed to include the basic characteristics of Thrash Metal in 29 minutes of pure, thrash Armageddon. 29 minutes of aggression, speed, precision and head-banging. The artist? The Gods Of Thrash. Ladies & Gentlemen behold “Slayer”
The band consisting of Mister Jeff Hanneman, Mister Kerry King, Mister Dave Lombardo and Mister Tom Araya, had released their debut album “Show No Mercy”, the classic ep “Hunting the chapel”, and the mighty “Hell Awaits”, an album with such an amazing impact factor on the metal scene, that almost every band has “stole” from or “borrowed” characteristics to shape up their music/sound. What I believe is that Slayer gave birth to their Magnus Oppus without knowing what they are releasing. I mean sure, they knew that their songs were killers, but I am not so sure they knew at the time that this album was to be a Hall Of Fame album and the album the Redefined the structure and the sound of the extreme music for ages to come. Even today, 32 years later, if you play “Reign In Blood” it sounds so fresh, and so wild and so untamed that you immediately know that what you hear is something completely different than the other stuff you normally are listening to. Even today, the best albums cannot reach its qualities, and aggression, and to be honest, who is the fool to try and defy its reign supreme as the best thrash metal album of all times?
You easily understand that this album is beyond any critic. So I will just mention the tracks of album as it flows and streams from hell. You know it too: One anthem after another, and it all come together reaching the climax or the title track. Simple as that, 29 minute of the destructive power and riffing from the Gods Of Thrash: SLAYER!
The album opens with “Angel Of Death”. You all know it, you all have heard it, you all have sang its lyrics, and you all know that it is one of the songs responsible for the battle-cry on their live appearances “fucking SLAAAYYYEEEERRRR!”. The infamous lyrics of the song refer to Josef Mengele the sick and twisted “doctor” in Auswitch concentration camp in Poland during the 2nd World War, where he experimented on humans for his own twisted “research”. This led to the false belief that Slayer were fans of the Nazis, which of course is not true, and the interest on the 2nd World War was coming especially from Jeff Hanneman’s side whose father had fought during the war and had taken part on D-day in Normandy. The riffing and the speed of the song was something completely new to the world, even among thrash metal bands. The all new that something has changed, they all new that something wicked this way comes!
“Piece by piece” and “Necrophobic” follow the “Angel” and set the pace of the album on the right track, as it is clear for the listener that his/her neck will break from the almost involuntary head-banging. The riffs are devastating, and the drumming is so precise that Lombardo was compared to a metronome. Tom Araya sets the scene on fire as his vocals add the salt, to the wounds…
The march continues with another classic “Altars of sacrifice” and the starting riff is a classic Slayer riff, that is embedded on your brain and you just cannot let go. DEVASTATION. I have seen Slayer live many times. Hell, they are my favorite band, but, I got a taste of their destructive power live, when I heard “altars of sacrifice” in a medley-like combination following “Reign In Blood”… I have no words to describe the chaos among the crowd and the energy and the power that Slayer displayed on the scene.
Another classic follows “Jesus saves”, and when your think that pace is dropping a little, “Criminally Insane” takes over to put you in your position. Unrelenting head-banging until you drop! The very fucking definition of Thrash Metal!
“Epidemic” and “Reborn” stream as natural followers to the destructive power the album is diffusing to all its surroundings. Thrash, thrash and only thrash! You just cannot describe it, since even a presentation is not enough to describe the feeling you get, and the chills you get by the energy that flows around this album.
The time is here, to pay homage to another anthem of the band “Postmortem”. A song that you know when you hear is the opening for the end complete. An amazing song, with riffs that haunt your soul forever, and then the steady mid-pace rhythm, gives its place to an agonizing high speed ending, and then you hear it…. The rain… You feel death is in the air…. And all of the sudden the massive riffing of “Raining blood” hits you in the face, only to be completed by the cataclysmic drumming… You just cannot help it. You are just smashing things, breaking your neck by the head-banging, and shouting “Raining Blood, from a lacerated sky, bleeding its horror…” A masterpiece, a timeless masterpiece that is responsible for the birth of many musical genres, and not only that, but also a pacemaker, that set the whole extreme music scene on alert. I am sure that many “ kids” at the time started their own band trying to play like Slayer did on this diamond.
I cannot say something bad for this album, because honestly, and objectively there is nothing bad you can say for it. What you can do, is to open your ears and surrender to its rhythm, to its passion, to its spirit, and bow before an album that not only made music history, it also changed its course and future.
I will not talk about how Ricky Rubin showed his interest to producing this album, or how Def Jam Records signed Slayer as their first Metal band ever. This is history, and we shall talk about it on another chapter, in another story about “Reign In Blood”, I will just mention that the cover is the artwork of Mister Larry Carrol, and although it was made a classic through the album, it has been included in the top ten of the Heaviest Album Covers of Blender Magazine in 2006.
You just have to hear it, you just have to feel it and live it. I know it, you know it… “Reign In Blood” is the best Thrash Metal Album of all times!
Slayer thank you for the music!

This is by far THE best Death Metal Album I’ve heard since a long time! It is amazing, and this stuff is what make Death Metal great! Hall Of Fame quality!
The “Authority” Among Metalheads
During the last few months I have found myself reading about new bands, old bands, reviews, reviews on the reviews, and f course the untold “contest” of who has discovered the most unknown super underground underdogs that “rule”, and how “amazing” super duper hyper technical players are, the “new godz” of the underground Death Metal scene.... Well this band that not even their moms know they exist. Well I have news for you, who the fuck cares? Dude you need to realize that we are talking about music! Music that we love, all of us love! So I really don't give a shit if you discover a band first, second or third... I really don't. Between us we all know that every day 1000 bands are formed, but what most seem to not get is that very few, very very few have what it takes to make it in this very demanding scene! Another problem is that most of the Death Metal scene world wide is what I call partly underground. Why? That’s easy: because not many hear to Death Metal! Plus the new genres have really done great damage to the scene, not “grunge-like” damage to the metal scene, but still damage is damage. Personally I cannot stand more than 3 songs of a death core band, but hey... it is just music, there are people who really like what they are hearing and in the end who am I to judge?
Ok, I am listening to extreme music since 1983, and I have been there for Death Metal since its birth, and only me knows how much I love this music, but does this make me an “authority” on death metal music? Fuck no! Yes it makes me a historian of Death Metal, yes I have deep knowledge about it, but in no way this dedication to this kind of music makes me an “authority”, and the reason is really simple: we are talking about music, and everyone is free to say whatever he feels about it! So, where we draw the line and what are the standards that make an album great, or even better legendary, and place a band in the Death Metal Hall of Fame? Hm.... Personally I believe that the last album from Immolation “Atonement” really kicks ass! For me it is an amazing album, and a hellish release from a band which I would easily include to the Death Metal Hall of Fame! So, lets take Immolation as an example Legendary debut, and I know that all of you who are over the age of thirty five know exactly for what I am talking about: 1991′s Dawn Of Possession! An album stigmatizing Death Metal forever, and believe me for those who remember other metal release of this particular year what Immolation did with their debut is unbelievable. Lets see other releases of this year: Entombed - Clandestine, Death - Human, Dismember - Like an ever flowing stream, Autopsy - Mental Funeral, Morbid Angel - Blessed are the sick... and many more! So if anyone has any kind of conception about what a year 1991 was for Death Metal, easily understands why Immolation wrote their own blood history with their debut. And then as a very dedicated band that loves Death Metal not only from the artistic point of view, but also from the fan’s side, after 36 years they release ‘Atonement”! Fuck! Dude Immolation really are a kick ass band in general but especially for the Death Metal scene.... Well I don't know about you, they have earned their place among the best of the best!
So yes, concept of what you are doing, and respect for the kind of music you are serving is an element for making your presence heard. Dedication to your work also is another factor. Patience, ok, duration? Of course duration is a critical criterion for me, because how many times have we seen very promising bands, with amazing demos, or amazing debuts, and then came the silence.... How many new bands have ,what I have come to call the “Heart of steel” (check previous post), to make it and earn their place in the Death Metal Hall of Fame? Dude they are really very few...
So I don't get why you think you are an authority if you know some bands that only you, and probably them know they exist? What kind of knowledge is this? And above all what good is it for the scene we love? Yeah man, you and me love the same kind of shit, the same kind of music.... So please enlight me with your knowledge over Death Metal, and explain to me how did you come to believe you are a “metal-father”?
Few days ago, I read this from a guy who indeed listens to Death metal, and I know he loves our music: “Death is not even death metal! What about Origin?”!!! Now dude... WTF!?!?! It would be really easy to tell you that when Chuck Shuldiner was inventing Death Metal, Origin were.....lol, I don't know man, probably not even born, so take your blasphemy and keep it to yourself. NO, I am not defending Death, I am just saying that there are some lines that although you are free to say your own fragile little truth, make you a joke if you cross them. Another answer to this guy (who I am telling you he really loves Death metal) could be “ok dude, we get it you hate Death and love Origin, now tell us how many Hall Of Fame Albums do Origin have? Oooohhhh! Shit not even close yet huh”!
So, what I mean to say here is that we all have some bands we love more than others, yet we cannot put all the bands in a straight line. For example, I know Grave have not been the most technical, or the most brutal, band. And yes, they don't yet have made it to the Hall of Fame with an album, so does this mean they are not a good band? Personally I consider Grave on of the most dedicated underdogs of the Death Metal scene, and think of them as true death metal band, and true death metal soldiers, from who newer bands have a lot to learn if they study not only their music, but also their moves, their sound and what ultimately makes Grave one of the most respected Bands in the scene! So dude although you may love Origin, compared to Grave they are.... Little yet to reach their level, so for me it is impossible to put Death and Origin in the same sentence when talking about Death metal.
Still although you can know almost all the bands that play DM, you need to keep in mind some lines that refer to the “Unholy Monsters”. Who are these monsters? Come on, you all know them: Death, Entombed, Carcass, Bolt Thrower, Obituary, Morbid Angel, Immolation, Suffocation, Dismember, and many more...
Remember, NO MORE “AUTHORITIES”.... It is just music man! ANd believe me I love it as much as you do....
Just stay the fuck heavy!
