Are there any game genres throughout history that were never truly recognised, or were tied to a game that simply didn't have enough steam or was too flawed that the genre never gained the traction it might have otherwise?

Or perhaps genres which once had a rich representation that were almost forgotten or abandoned. Until crowdfunding, arguably space shooters were scorched earth for a long time although there always seemed to be an underlying desire to bring it back, and now look at it. 6DOF (Descent) games seem to be making a comeback too that just a year or 2 ago might have been non-existent in the memories of many younger gamers.

When Ginny Kissed Harry (Harry Potter) - by Nicholas Hopper

This is a short theme composed by Nicholas Hopper, who did the soundtrack for two of the Harry Potter Movies, and got a Grammy nomination for his work in the Half-Blood Prince. The song has a soft melody but also builds up some tension, which is a nice contrast.

Scotty Doesn't Know - Lustra (Eurotrip)

The legendary song from Eurotrip, performed by Matt Damon, has become part of rock history. The song is pretty self-explanatory, the message is simple, Scotty doesn't know.

"The Pirate That Should Not Be" - Pirates of the Caribbean

Rodrigo y Gabriela teamed up with Hans Zimmer to record the soundtrack to The Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. This song features rhythmic and aggressive guitars, making the song intense and fast paced. At the same time, you can hear the classic Hans Zimmer pirate theme that we all associate with the movies.

"Nyah"- Mission Impossible 2

There’s a lot of great music in movies, composed specifically for certain scenes, and as general themes. There’s a lot of amazing film music composers out there.

This week the song is Nyah, from Mission Impossible 2, composed by the legendary Hans Zimmer and featuring Heitor Pereira. The song is actually not flamenco, but definitely flamenco inspired, and has great rhythm.

Political refugee from Nigeria, Nelly moved to Maryland when he was young, and is now living the American dream. He was recently on The Voice, and made it to the second round.

This song is If I were the King, and this video is him on the guitar and his friend  beat-boxing the percussion, and he also sneaks in a Fresh Prince verse.

Laid to Rest

Since it's Halloween, I'm going to skip the Acoustic Soul genre this week, and post a song more fitting for the occasion.

This is Laid to Rest, by Molotov Jukebox. They are a British band, and you might recognize their lead singer Natalia Tena, also known as Tonks in the Harry Potter movies. Tena is actually a very good musician, she even plays the accordion, which is a nightmare to learn. They have a really unique style, not sure they fit under one genre.

Sittin' In the Middle

Raul Midon is a singer-songwriter based out of New York. He and his twin brother were blinded in a hospital accident when they were babies. He’s an awesome guitar player who combines a lot of percussion in his guitar style. He’s like a mix of Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway.

This is a live performance of his song, Sittin’ In the Middle, where does his classic trumpet sound using only his mouth.

Each week I'll write a little bit about the artist and why I picked the song.
