Exclusive interview with Louie Austen
Ottersandweasel had the change to interview Louie Austen, one of the best voices from Austria with worldwide fame. In our opinion, he is one of the most enigmatic nightclub crooners and his performances are unique. They make the audience tremble and are the most exhilarating performances, especially in electronic music.
Louie Austen Photoshoot, Great Eastern Hotel, 25th November 2005
The exclusive interview was held in German, we publish a transcript here:
Ottersandweasels: Hi Louie! We are fans of yours since the early 2000s when part of our collective had the pleasure to see you live in concert in their hometown in the Soul Club in Amstetten. How do you prepare for your gigs to stay that powerful and fresh?
Louie Austen: Hi! It’s a pleasure to meet you and that was really a long time ago, but very nice that you remember. So there are two things I always do: First, I never play the same set, so each concert is different. I have compilations put together and then I decide which songs I want to sing and how I arrange them.
Second, I try to improve myself at every gig. Each concert has to be better than the last. Even after 10.000 gigs, the next one will be the most amazing and better than anything I’ve done before. This prevents it from being worn down and feeling swamped. I have to have the feeling that I’m at my personal high, everything I can, I will perform!
Ottersandweasels: We are happy that we could interview you, as we are a small music blog this is a big honor to us. How do you think about nowadays marketing and why don’t you perform at the Marriott Hotel in Vienna anymore?
“I always try to give more”, Louie Austen
Louie Austen: I have a great team and I am convinced that these days online marketing and especially bloggers have the biggest power in moving things. For instance, I did a gig at the Hilton Plaza, there was not a single poster promoting the gig but due to the bloggers, 500 people arrived. This was truly impressive to me and this kind of promotion will take over the classical media, it will change marketing completely. The concerts at the Marriott quite to budget cuts, which is still quite sad to me.
Ottersandweasels: It’s impressive with how many musicians you already worked together (Parov Stelar, Joyce Muniz, …), how do these collaborations start?
Louie Austen: People ask me if I wanna sing for them. Often their agents ask me or they contact me directly if I’m interested. I like this concept as I can offer my skills and we can try out if it works or not. This gives an easier access for the producers and I want to be approachable.
Ottersandweasels: What are your latest projects?
Louie Austen: There is the song Dream your Dream by Guiddo featuring me, released at luvshackrecords. I recommend you watch the video it is very beautiful, it’s a German-Chinese collaboration.
And there is my new live project that will premiere at the Waves Vienna Music Festival, September 30. This will be a world premiere, very groovy and funky and on top in a church. The compositions are from Karl Hudina and the drummer Andi Winkler is producing the whole thing. It has electronic and acoustic loops and simply sounds amazing. I was blown away when I heard it for the first time.
And as I am so excited about this collaboration I want as many people as possible to come and enjoy this groovy masterpiece.
Ottersandweasels: Thanks Louie for your time and patience and we cannot wait for your gig at the Changemaker Church at the Waves Vienna Music Festival!
Louie Austen: Thank you, guys! Ciao, ciao!
Win 2×2 tickets for Louie Austen at the Waves Vienna Music Festival!!

Ars Electronica Festival 2017 Linz
AI – The Other I
Ars Electronica Festival – an International Festival for Art, Technology and Society taking place from September 7 – 11, 2017 in Linz, Austria. For more than three decades, this world-renowned event has provided an annual setting for artistic and scientific encounters with social and cultural phenomena that are the upshot of technological change. In Ars Electronica’s inimitable fashion, elaborations in the form of symposia, exhibits, performances, and interventions will proliferate beyond the confines of conference halls and exhibition spaces, and take them out into the public sphere and throughout the cityscape.
The years topic AI – The Other I (Das andere Ich) deals with artificial intelligence as it has made it back to the top of the hit parade of hot topics. The Big Four of the Internet shift research from the military and elite universities into the private sector and establish it on a broad basis. Gerfried Stocker, the director of the festival addresses several interesting questions related to the topic:
How to deal with ethical principles for these super robots when we are unable to accomplish this among our fellow human beings?
Will we ever even be able to accept the fundamental otherness of such an artificial intelligence, considering how difficult this is for us in our interactions with other people with a different skin color or of another religion?
Perhaps we should resist obsession with the frisson of conceivable Terminator scenarios a century hence; maybe we should stay focused on how we want to configure technology’s upcoming quantum leap.
Looking with the eyes of future archaeologists our time can be called the CAMBRIAN EXPLOSION OF DIGITIZATION so let’s check out what it brings:
Day 1 at Ars Electronica Festival
Postcity
I arrive by train from Vienna at the main station in Linz and head right to the POSTCITY, the heart of the Ars Electronica Festival. The entrance of this space is always special to me, like a bit of a walk in space, I enter the property climb the ramp that used to deliver all the mail coming to Linz and enter the space ship.
The festival tries to combine a lot of different approaches and gives space to all kinds of visitor groups, from professional media arts collectors to first graders who want to engage in Minecraft. I like that.
I like the unpolishedness of the halls that open up space for the artist’s works and give freedom to try things out you usually cannot.
The first two works I see immediately struck my attention: Nyloïd by Cod.Act and Robot, Doing Nothing by Emanuel Gollob. The first one is a huge sound sculpture in the shape of a moveable tripod consisting of three six-meter-long nylon limbs moving through space.
https://www.ottersandweasels.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/IMG_5508.m4v
Nyloïd by Cod.Act (c: Christina Gruber)
The second deals with our constantly-being-busy attitude, pushing us into constant presence, which ultimately leads to nothing as studies show that doing nothing is way more productive. This meditative robot sculpture interacts with its viewer by mainly forming patterns. Doing nothing can be so beautiful.
Robot, Doing Nothing by Emanuel Gollob (c: Christina Gruber)
But there is a multitude of exhibits and installations to explore in the Postcity, so we can only give a short and ery personal insight:
Archive Dreaming by Refik Anadol (c: Christina Gruber)
Modular Rhythm Machine by Nicolas Kisic Aguirre (c: Christina Gruber)
Reading Plan by Lien-Cheng Wang (c: Christina Gruber)
Regenerative Reliquary by Amy Karle (c: Christina Gruber)
Sculpture of Time by Akinori Goto (c: Christina Gruber)
Gallery Spaces – Paketspeicher (c: Christina Gruber)

cellF by Guy Ben-Ary (c: Christina Gruber)
Feminist Climate Change
The exhibition Feminist Climate Change: beyond the binary is hosted by the UCLA Art / Sci Center & voidLab. The show addresses gender and environmental issues and shows innovative approaches to teach media art and media culture. As well the potential to shape the future is explored. The faculty driven research labs and centers enable students and faculty to work collaboratively across disciplinary and institutional boundaries. Besides artists also the work of female climate change scientists are featured.
Concerts
Other highlights of Day 1 were especially music wise was the Sempookin Quartette of Ai Wada with the fan (ventilator) band and the public festival opening in the Postcity.

Turnton Docklands by Time’s Up
Besides the Postcity there are numerous other venues spread over the whole city of Linz. One of my favorite shows this year was in the basement of the Lentos of the artist duo Time’s Up. The installation is called Turnton Docklands and travels with you into a small coastal village in the year 2047. This physical narrative imagines the future and lets you be part of it, I really encourage everyone to go there the show is running until October 22, 2017.
Gluon Session
Aside from all the events also conferences, lectures, and workshops take place. At this year’s Opening Symposium the Gluon Session was held, the curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, art historian Paul Dujardin and Gerfried Stocker were discussing the future role of art and science and active collaborations. In this case that scientists deliberately choose to collaborate with artists to make junctions. These can be between objects, non-objects, people and placement.
Manthia Diawara per Skype during the Gluon Session (c: Christina Gruber)
My day at the Ars Electronica ended after a short intermezzo in the Mariendom at L’Enfant with a collaboration between Breaking The Wall and Chris and Didi Bruckmayr in the Train Hall. And OFF.

Anderson .Paak joins Gospel Choir in new video
Watch Anderson .Paak joins Gospel Choir in “Come Down” Cover
As a prelude to his Grammy night performance with A Tribe Called Quest.
“Come Down” is one of my favorite songs on Anderson .Paak’s latest album Malibu. As it all started last August when I discovered the video from one of their live gigs for NPR Music. Since amazing Anderson .Paak and his alike great band The Free Nationals convey this unique groove that just makes you tap your toes and the whole room is filled with this special “ooooohhhhh”.
And being one of my favorite artists in 2016 the love goes on with the latest video for the song “Come Down” released February 8 as a perfect preview of this years Grammys on Sunday.
The drummer and singer is nominated for both Best New Artist and Best Urban Contemporary Album.
According to the description, the video features many of .Paak’s friends and family from his hometown of Oxnard, CA. Both his sister Camille and his 6-year-old son Soul make appearances.
The Grammys ceremony, which includes a performance from .Paak, will broadcast live from LA’s Staples Center at 8pm (EST) on February 12 via CBS.
“That’s love!” <3

Waves Vienna Music Festival 2016 is coming up
Like every year, for the last 3 years we give you the heads up for the upcoming Waves Vienna Music Festival 2016.
This years motto is „East meets West“, so numerous international alternative, electronic, rock, and club acts will be performing around Vienna’s 9th district. Additionally, local artists and sophisticated musicians from Eastern Europe form an essential part of the festival’s programme.
It has shrunk a bit but nevertheless the quality of music should be very good as usual.
The good part of making a festival a bit smaller is that also the ticket price decreases 🙂
So now you can watch a ton of concerts from 29.SEP.-1.OCT.2016 for just 56€ in Vienna, which is quite nice.
Also the venues are now super close together and all in walking distance in the 9th district, which is also a big advantage to the last year.
But now to the music acts of Waves Vienna music festival 2016
We got some kind of “Headliners” with
Zack Abel
Damn this guy is sooooo good, my favorite of the whole line up I guess
Robb,
We are Scientists
Gold Panda,
Holy Fuck,
mini concert from KEXP
And typical for a Showcase Festival a ton of acts nobody has ever heard of. But that is the beauty of it, you just pick some stuff and will be (mostly) surprised by their music.
Some of them we know and can recommend:
Lausch
homegrown superstar 🙂
Hella Comet
Monophobe
If you wanna know more about the years before, here are our reviews of 2015, 2014.
Here we have a YouTube Playlist with more Acts of the Waves Vienna Music Festival 2016, you can just skip through and then you know what will go on music-wise at the festival 🙂
So put on your dancing shoes and get out there

Hip Hop Open Austria 2016 review
So the first bigger festival version of the HIP HOP OPEN AUSTRIA 2016 is over. Instead of Arena Wien it took place at Austrias best festival location -> Wiesen in Burgenland last weekend.
We only could be there the first day -> Friday 22nd of July but already this one day was really really good 🙂
Oddisee & the good Compny
One of our favorite hip hop live acts of all time is Oddisee since the Waves Vienna festival last year. Unfortunately they were stuck in traffic and missed their slot on the main stage, so they had to perform later on the small stage. The quality of hip-hop he is bringing with his amazing live band called the good Compny is just mindblowing. Also in Wiesen they were outperforming easily all the other acts of this night. So I was a bit sad that not more people saw them because they played the smaller stage. But I am quite sure next year they will get a better slot on the main stage, cause everybody who had the chance to see them was cheering and screaming for more at the end of the show. So Hip Hop Open Austria 2017? get this man and his band on the main stage, haha.
If you ever get the chance to watch them somewhere just buy the tickets, watch the show and thanks us later 🙂

Beginner
Formerly known as Absolute Beginner the Beginners played as headliner of day 1 of the Hip Hop Open Austria 2016. They performed a very massive set packed with hits from the good old heydays of German Hip-Hop from the early 2000s combined with some tracks from the upcoming new records, which sounded just amazing. DJ Mad is just one of the best Hip-Hop producers in Germany.

Fünf Sterne Deluxe
The Fünf Sterne played a very fun set and had the very nice idea to put a full bar on stage. Even tough I was always a big Blumentopf fan this time I liked the concert of Fünf Sterne Deluxe even more than the Blumentopf gig.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Blumentopf
Back in the days when they released their fist album called “Kein Zufall” they were by far my favorite german hip-hop act, but over the years they somehow lost something which I really liked about them. I cannot put my finger on it exactely but I just lost interest in them somehow. Besides that they played a good set, with a few hits and most important they did some freestyle parts, which are always fun.

Hip Hop Open Austria 2016 is coming up
We are already superpsyched and cannot wait till next Friday the 22nd of July 2016 when the Hip Hop Open Austria is finally starting at one of the best festival locations in Austria, the Ottakringer Arena Wiesen. Hell yeah 🙂
As we are truly kind of fanboy and fangirl of Oddisee and his fabulous band Good Compny, which we covered extensively also at last years Waves Vienna Festival, that act alone would be enough for us to go there.
But the two day Hip Hop Festival offers way more than just Oddisee.
Check out the Line up:
So the first day, Friday 22nd of July is already crazy for all German Hip Hop Lovers:
Fünf Sterne Deluxe & Blumentopf & Beginner
playing in a row, will definitely not happen anytime soon anymore.
The Beginner just dropped a new single a few weeks ago which is very promising:
So we hope they will play a few other tracks too from the upcoming (long awaited) album.
Tickets are available via Oeticket.
Hopefully we can get a Photo Press pass so we can capture this outstanding Hip Hop Event this year 🙂
see you there peepz.
