Behind-the-Scenes: The Muted Trailer

This trailer captures EVERYTHING that we love about this book: Denver’s performance, her dream, and most of all - the power she has to mute the monsters who have hurt her.
But how did we get to this point? Come with us behind the curtain as we show you just how a trailer gets made!
When you only have around 30 seconds to capture someone’s attention and tell them why they HAVE to read this book, it can be pretty daunting!
So when we were at the script-writing stage of this process, we really thought about it like Tami Charles’ poetry. The script itself reads like a poem from the book: short, powerful lines that build in momentum until they reach a final call to action at the end.
All I ever wanted was for the world to hear my voice.
Once I was on stage...everyone would know my song.
And he told me I could have it all.
The music. The parties. The perks.
My name in lights.
He wanted to break me. Mute me.
But the world hasn’t heard the last of me yet.
We pulled some of the trailer script directly from the description of the book itself, and made sure that this trailer was focused on the most important person in the book: Denver herself.
Once the script was finalized, we discussed what this trailer would actually look like. Based on our ideas, our video team created this stunning storyboard. Check out some of these initial concepts right next to the final shots!
Once we had the storyboard and the script finalized, it was time to find the perfect actress to play Denver. We looked at plenty of incredible actresses, but Taylor Brightman was instantly the perfect fit.
In addition to looking exactly like Tami Charles imagined Denver, Taylor also expressed a lot of enthusiasm for the role and made sure we knew how excited she was for it. We knew she was the right choice!
We knew we needed some music to set the mood of the trailer...and luckily, Tami Charles wrote and performed FOUR original songs for the Muted audiobook! We decided to use the instrumental track from her song Once In Your Life, and it fit perfectly.

Due to Covid-19 and quarantine restrictions, we had to be sure to take every possible precaution while filming. We kept the crew small and filmed over the course of two days. Here are some behind-the-scenes shots!
STEP SIX: THE FINISHED PRODUCT!
Once filming was done, the team got to editing the footage, adding text, and overlaying the music and voice-over tracks. With a few tweaks, we were DONE and ready to reveal the trailer to the world!
