Laughing softly when he saw her reaction and heard the _Mhm _that left her, he shook his head. “I am one old man. Older than most. And that is fine. I don’t look four hundred which is a good thing as I wouldn’t be able to handle the wrinkles” he teased and shook his head. Just getting a grey hair during the small amount of time he was a mundane had caused a panic attack. “I am immortal. A warlock if I have to be more exact” he added and shrugged.

A warlock, Kamala knew of few of those. At least she thinks she does. She’d needed the help of Dr. Strange when her dad was sick. The sorcerer supreme had to use magic and science to save her dad. Finding out Magnus was immortal made the young adult if the doc was immortal.

“That’s kinda cool if you ask me.” She paused for a moment, debating on if she should ask the question. “Okay, so like, are warlocks and sorcerers the same and the word is used interchangeably? Or are warlocks and sorcerers different? Because I know a few sorcerers.”

Like me.  Kate was shocked at how blatant Kamala was about it.  It’s not like they knew each other well, and yet here she was telling Kate that she had powers.   That could go wrong very fast if she was anyone but herself.   People could try to use her, to manipulate her.  Worse, people could lash out and attack her if they didn’t know how to react to people with powers.  It’d happened enough in history.  It’d happened enough to people without powers throughout history.  

Kree, Mutants, Terrigen - Kate didn’t understand any of the words that Kamala was spewing out.  What should could piece together was that Inhumans were more … alien, she supposed?  Like if Clark or Kara passed their powers down to their kids.  “Yeah, I think - well, we just divide it up.  If you’re human with powers, whether through genetics or because you fell into a vat of Indian Hill sludge, you’re Meta.  Or as good as.  If you have alien blood, you’re alien.  Though the aliens are more of Metropolis issue.  We deal with the acid rogues and the Indian Hill rejects really.” 

She knew that Kamala probably didn’t understand what any of that meant.  But there was still … something else.  Something twinging the back of Kate’s mind.  “So you’re really telling me that you don’t know Gotham?  What about Metropolis? Blüdhaven?  Central City? Do any of them sound familiar?”

At this point Kamala felt like they were both talking different languages that were from the same base. Where you can sort of understand each other but the key words weren’t something you could totally get without more effort. The young adult wasn’t sure if she would get it without possibly having to draw out a mind map of some sort.

Kamala wondered if Kate would consider her an alien or human. Because Everyone in Kamala’s family grew up and lived on Earth. They might not be in the same country, but it’s all Earth. From what she knew about her own powers coming from the Kree, it’s genetics that date back to beginnings of human civilization. Almost prehistorical. She’d consider herself more related to a banana than the Kree.

However it seemed like Kate was asking the right kind of questions. Ones that Kamala had answers to. “Metropolis sounds like it comes from Megamind... Wait no that was Metro City.” She let out a small laugh, she hadn’t seen that movie in years. “But no. Where are they? Illinois? Upstate New York? California?”

Kamala looked up to her friend, she didn’t think much of the old report she was reading. It didn’t seem to add up and older reports tended to me a bit of nonsense to her. However she saw an opportunity to poke at her friend.

“Really?” She said faking her shock,“I would have never thought to take any of this with a grain of salt.” She couldn’t keep it up though, she chuckled and nodded, “I know, buddy.”

There aren’t many things that actually scare Kamala... well... the list would probably look long, but she felt like they were all reasonable fears that probably everyone had. But Merlin didn’t really set off her fight or flight.

“Afraid of you?” She let out a small laugh, “Merlin, I think the only time you could make me afraid of you is if you came at me sideways with a knife.”

Kamala thankfully was able to stop herself from rolling her eyes. Like, duh, who wouldn’t want to be adored. Especially a guy who was probably someone that was very hard to adore.

Of course Kamala didn’t even dream of saying that sort of thing aloud. So she gave a pressed smile. “I have no doubt, Mr. Nygma.”

Kamala somewhat knew that age was an illusion and after a curtain point just pointless. She’d met the Logan Howlett, the Wolverine, and she knew he was much older than he looked. Like how Magnus was.

However getting that number of 400 was much higher than she was expecting. She didn’t know what she was expecting honestly but it wasn’t that. “Mhm.” she said meekly, knowing full well she was doing exactly what he was talking about.

So she wasn’t a complete idiot then.  Well, the cockroach thing was an idiot response.  Anyone with a brain knew that cockroaches were only placed on Earth to be a hindrance to high caliber creatures.  But, she actually questioned being able to compare and contrast.  Most wouldn’t have thought of that, because they were idiots.  Bullock wouldn’t have thought of that.  Cluemaster (who stole HIS thing) wouldn’t have thought of that - because he was an idiot who could only COPY.  But Miss Khan here clearly had at least a handful of brain cells.

Ed’s eyes darted around the room until he found a spare table.  He snatched the duffel bag, heading over to it.  He pulled the gloves he’d had in his pocket out, snapping them on before diving into the bag.  “I have two incomplete skeletons,” he said.  “The odds of finding completely in tact skeletons, especially if the civilization has no preservation methods, are low.  Practicing on incomplete skeletons would only increase the capability of repeating the results in the field.” 

He barely looked up when he spoke, instead focusing on laying out the skeletal pieces.   He wished he had some of his own pieces - all legally obtained.  Well - legal obtained by the GCPD.  Then illegally taken by Ed.   But the point was, he wasn’t idiotic enough to keep souvenirs.  Not after the scare that had come with Miss Kringle’s glasses.  

“Obviously, if you have a skull, the teeth can tell a lot.  The way teeth can tell you a whole story - it’s fascinating.”

Being excited about understanding something about a civilization that is unknown to the greater amount of people wasn’t something to laugh at, it was understandable. It was something that Kamala felt when she was able to understand a dying language when studying linguistics. These things are important and should be documented. So Kamala could understand Ed’s seemingly frantic talk.

She pushed her ergonomic rolly chair next to the desk that Ed had chosen to put the incomplete skeletons. Watching him carefully as he did so, as to see why he was putting things where.

“Have any extra gloves?” She asked, wanting to pick up the skulls as he mentioned that you could tell a lot about something by it’s teeth. Was it weird Kamala knew a lot about the structure of the mouth? Some might say yes, but she was also well versed in how the shape of the mouth could effect how you talk.

Kate raised an eyebrow at that.  She was sure that other people called Metas - Metas.  She’d heard Flash use it, and Kara.  Though Kara also dealt with aliens in addition to Metas.  But it wasn’t just a Gotham term.  Others used it, everyone used it!  One news station had picked it up, and it spread like wild fire.  She sat back for a minute, trying to find the words.  How do you describe something that everyone knows?  It’s like trying to describe how water is wet or rainbows are gay.

“Metas - Metahumans,” she said, waiting a moment to see if that triggered any bells.  “They’re - how do I describe it?  They’re people with powers.”  It seemed too basic to just say they had powers, but she didn’t know how else to describe it without it getting too complicated.  Because it was constantly growing, and some people called Kara and Clark metas but they were aliens.  Hell people had called Bruce a meta before because they were idiots who didn’t realize he was using technology, not powers.  “Gotham - well, we have enough problems on our own most of the time Metas steer clear.  And if they don’t, Batman usually makes sure they leave and go bother some other city.”

Having a word to encompass all powered people was probably a good idea and it was shocking that it took Kamala this long to learn of such a term. Especially when she herself was considered a Metahuman under the definition Kate just gave her.

Kamala frown a bit as she thought of what they called people with powers. “Well... it kind of depends how they got their powers I guess. Because there are Mutants, which are as they sound. People with genetic mutations that give them powers. Then there are Inhumans, like me, who inherited them from the Kree generations ago and it was activated by Terrigen mist. Then there are people who get powers from accidents or experiments and we just call those people with powers or powered people.” She paused to think if she missed anything, “I guess I never really had an all encompassing word.”

She took another bite of food before continuing. “Powered people, or Metas, are a bit of a mixed bag in Jersey City. Some of them just don’t bother anyone, some of them become heroes, and some use their abilities for harm. As is most things humans get when given something unique.”

Not a complete idiot, though anyone outside of the likes of Harvey Bullock could figure out that whatever he’d brought with him was to do with his proposal.  Bullock had always been one battery too short though.  Ed smirked and plopped the bag onto her work table, not minding the papers that he may have scattered because of it.

“Think dinosaurs but bigger.  Scientists have been able to figure out that dinosaurs had feathers just by their bones.  Imagine if we can decipher a whole culture just based off of bones.  Diet, size, outer layers of protective.  If they’re scaled or feathered or something else entirely.  If they have human level sentience or are as worthless as a cockroach.  The benefit that’d have to this mission.”    The awards he could win - though he wouldn’t say that aloud.  No, he needed some help before he could take the base research and run off.  Perhaps he could finally get the recognition he deserved.  

Ed didn’t notice the look the passed her eyes.  Or perhaps he did and his mind decided it wasn’t important now.  Something to revisit at a later date.  Perhaps if he had, he’d wonder where she’d heard his name before.  If it was something he should worry about.

It didn’t take her long to notice that Ed didn’t have much respect for people’s personal items as he disgracefully dropped the bag over her notes and knocking over a small photo her family. It didn’t irritate or dishearten Kamala, it was just a mental note she took.

“Don’t ever knock a cockroach, they’re much smarter than you’d imagine.” she said with a small smile before looking in the bag.

Oh this dude actually brought me a bag of bones like some freakin’ archaeologist. She thought very clearly before mentally apologizing to any possible telepathes on the ship.

Kamala wasn’t sure how qualified she was for this sort of thing. He did say he was biology researcher, and she kind of guessed that she could have some sort of say in how species interacted with each other based off size, diet, and clothes.

“Is there more than one being in this bag?” she asked looking up at him, keeping a calm demeanor. “You can’t really get too far without something to contrast it to, Mr. Nygma.”

Kamala knew it was somewhat rude to ask someone how old they are, especially when that number is probably much higher than her own. But Magnus mentioned being around for a long time, kind of making him sound like her Abu. She finished off her side before asking, “Magnus, if you don’t mind me asking, how old are you?”

Kamala sat up quickly before the dizziness caught up with her, causing her to lay right back down. She looked around to see a young man looking at her, he looked kind of scruffy but she wouldn’t say that. It’s not polite. He said something to her and she nodded in acknowledgment before actually properly comprehending what he said.

She didn’t remember what caused her to pass out and she only faintly remember what she dreamed about when she was out. Something about being back on earth with her friends, they were going to get Korean Barbecue. It was a memory more than a dream.

“Aw... Merlin... Have you ever craved Korean BBQ so much that you could almost smell it?” She asked as she more cautiously sat back.

Asgardi-what?  Asgardian. She’d never heard of that in her life.  Was it a type of Meta?  Or maybe they were an alien.  If Kara was here she might know (so would Clark, but Kate had a closer relationship with Kara - perhaps coming from the fact that they were both related to one of the “big” ones).    Whatever they were, they clearly seemed like they could be a threat.  Something to watch out for.  Maybe she could poke at the minds of some of her fellow security officers, see if they had ever heard of them.  The fact that their age seemed odd only added to the fact that these Asgardians were likely otherworldly.  

“Good to know.  Not that I want to deal with a shapeshifter.  That was never my job back at home.  I mean, we had a couple.  Basil, primarily.  But - well metas just don’t show up in Gotham.  I had friends who would be better equipped…”  But they weren’t here.  She had a Stephanie that didn’t even remember her.  Hell, even if Abbott was here he might be of help.  But she could make it work.  Stephanie remembered being a Bat at least, and some of the security officers she worked with were competent.  

The young researcher tried not to give away that she had no idea what metas are. The only context she’d heard the word meta was when her friends back in Jersey City were like ‘woah dude, that’s pretty meta.’ which always made her roll here eyes. Maybe Metas were just Gotham talk for powered people? Kamala didn’t want to be rude but not knowing the answer to ‘what was a meta’ was going to bother her until she got the answer.

“I’m sure there are people in your department that are equip to handle people like Loki, or uhh... Metas? Okay but like, what is a Meta? Because what I know is meta is a prefix or something self referencing itself. I got a hunch that what you’re talking about isn’t either of those.” She put her spoon down as she spoke wanting to give full attention to Kate.
