unpopular opinion

So I see a lot of people talking about how Elliot is being disrespectful towards Kathy’s memory by moving on so quickly to Olivia and she deserved better. 

Might be an unpopular opinion…but I don’t see it that way. 

Olivia is not just some new love interest for Elliot. I truly believe that Elliot has had deep feelings for her for years, maybe even loved her for years. However, having those feelings for her would just be too complicated, for his marriage and their friendship. So any feelings he had for her were suppressed. If he loved her, he denied his love for her. 

I believe it’s possible that for a long time, Elliot was in love with both Olivia and Kathy. Of course he had to stay with Kathy, his wife and the Mother of his children. To some degree Kathy saw this. It’s a big reason as to why she made Elliot not speak to Olivia again (at least that’s what I gathered?) And Elliot wanted to be there for his family so obliged. I also wonder now that Kathy is gone, if she would have wanted Elliot to move on and be happy. 

Also, it’s not like they’re jumping straight into bed together. Elliot accidentally blurted out his feelings for her. Definitely did not want to do that. I feel like this doesn’t mean that we will get a lot of Bensler action straight away as there’s a lot to unpack there. But a girl can hope!

Why i am so excited that Elliot was the first to say I love you!

I notice how during the rare times Olivia lets down her walls and is intimate with Elliot, it never lasts long. She hugs him in this scene, pouring her grief into him, then she releases him. She reassures him that she’s fine. He doesn’t believe her. For so many of us, we would take that invitation to share our pain. 

Olivia changes the topic back to work. 

I feel like this is common for Olivia and understandable. She never gets too deep with Elliot. She opens up a little and shares just enough. But not too much for him to hurt her. 

Her walls are now sky high since he returned and Elliot has to rightfully so, earn her trust back again. 

Throughout SVU I always thought Olivia was the one who held the strongest feelings for him, which is why I had little hope of Bensler ever becoming canon, because Olivia would never share how he feels. 

Yet the writers surprised us all and had Elliot slip out the old I love you unintentionally. Elliot was the first one to make the move. Even unintentional, he was the one to be vulnerable and bare his heart to her. 

Now Liv gets to choose how she wants to respond, with less fear of getting hurt now that she knows how he feels. Maybe this time when Liv goes in for a hug or takes the opportunity to open up to him and be intimate with him, she won’t pull back so quickly. Maybe we can see them bloom!

i just think it's funny for people to argue that elliot and olivia wouldn't work in a romantic relationship bc they "work best as partners" when the fact that they cared about each other too much as partners to truly work well together was actually a constant issue.

I still can’t believe that OC actually WENT. THERE. Like for twelve years Benson x Stabler shippers lived off of lingering glances and emotional codependence and exactly two hugs and then we were left HIGH AND DRY for ten years, NO CLOSURE NO CONTACT NO NOTHING which is why my pairing tag has always been ‘the pairing that ruined my life.’ And even when it was announced Elliot was finally returning I feel like most people were just thrilled with the idea of having them on screen together and we were like they’re going to speak and maybe if we’re lucky they might accidentally brush hands??? And we will memorialize it in a thousand gifs and fanfics???  And instead we’re getting THIS DELUGE and ELLIOT TELLING OLIVIA HE LOVES HER, a thing I literally never thought would happen and is now CANON and I’m just like WHAT DO I DO WITH MY HANDS. I AM PACING CIRCLES AROUND MY LIVING ROOM JUST FLAILING MY LIMBS. WHAT DO I DO.
