Note: Shaba is an adopt; I adopted him from @fledercanons ! All credit for any and all icons goes to my friend.

Verse One- Cub. Shaba (meaning copper) is an only-cub with no littermates; he lives in a small pride outside of the Pridelands, but not in the Outlands. (He does have two older sisters, however.) Here, he’s about young!Simba’s age in the film!

Verse Two- Teen. Shaba is now an adolescent lion, and he is always at odds with his perfectionist father, who dislikes his only son because he’s clumsy and uncoordinated at times.

Verse Three- Adult. Now an adult, he is living independently as a rogue in the Pridelands, staying as far away as possible from his father.

Verse Four- AU. Shaba is in some sort of AU here! Maybe it’s a Zootopia verse, maybe it’s just another TLK AU- who knows!

The cub startled, alarmed at the unfamiliar voice. His ears angled forward, and, trying to be brave, he puffed his chest out and blinked the tears from his copper-colored eyes.

“Y-… yeah!” Shaba called back, shakily stepping forward a few times. “Um… who are you…?”

He finally emerged from the tall grass close to Kanti, flattening his ears in fear. What if this cub’s mother was around and saw him as a threat?

Kanti's eyes roamed over Shaba, staying silent for just a beat too long before finally answering. "I'm Kanti, why were you crying?" It was a relief he didn't have to wander off, mother would have been disappointed with him.

The lion cub was, privately, really surprised to see that Kanti seemed to have a rather different-looking face, but he wasn’t going to say as much. That would’ve been really rude.

“I, um…” Shaba hesitated. “I… don’t know where I am. I got too far away from my family, a-and now I don’t know how I’m gonna get home…”

He shuddered. “My father’s gonna be super mad at me…”

(🤎) Shaba would be a mix of freeze and fawn, I think! He knows that because of his weak legs that he couldn’t flee far from danger as a cub, nor fight, but he would try to talk himself out of a scary situation if he needed to! He’s not super socially confident, but he would try his best!

Shaba was, quite frankly, horrified. He’d never seen anyone get stuck by a porcupine- let alone this badly!

He gaped in shock, then hurried towards the other cub. “Diku! Wh-what happened?! I mean- I- did you-” he stuttered, shaking his head rapidly to try and tamper down the panic that made his neck fur bristle.

“Do- do you… want us ‘ta take ‘em out…?”

"It hurts!" Diku wailed, not providing much in the way of a clear reply. Tears were rolling down her cheeks hotly, eyes shut tight as she pawed at the quills embedded deeply in her face.

"It hurrrts!! I want mom!! I ... I can't open my eyes! I want mom!"

"Stop pawing at them! You'll make it worse!" Sarabi ordered, smacking her sister's paw down.

"This is bad," Dwala frowned, ducking her head. "Mother is going to be furious."

"Listen, we don't have a choice," Sarabi insisted. "Mother will know best how to take them out. I don't want to make it worse — I think it's time to go home."

"But we just started playing!" Naanda whimpered. "Can we take Shaba with us? Please??? Pleaaaaase?"

Dwala looked skeptically at Shaba. "You wanna come? You'd have to help guide Diku."

The little male flattened his ears. His father wouldn’t be happy knowing he’d helped another pride’s cub, but his heart told him to do it. Plus, he couldn’t refuse Dwala’s offer. He did want to help Diku.

“Yeah,” Shaba agreed, nodding and slowly moving to Diku’s side. “I’ll help you. Don’t worry, Diku- we’ll get you back to your mom, ok?”

He stuck close to the female cub’s side as the group began to move along, feeling bad that she was in so much pain.

He murmured to her in a gesture of comfort, “it’s alright. W-we’ll be back to your home soon.”

Once they did arrive, Shaba became very nervous about being in the girls’ mother’s presence. What if she attacked him? He couldn’t run away fast enough to escape a fully-grown lioness, especially with his weak legs.

He was already struggling to stop himself from trembling when he saw a big lioness that he assumed was Sarabi and her sisters’ mother; Shaba gulped.

The jungle had grown quieter, lately, no more twittering birds or the hoots of distant monkeys. Mother's catches grew scarcer by the day. Kanti blinked, still somewhat groggy from being woken so suddenly. Mother still insisted on carrying him everywhere. Even to the goldenlands for a hunting trip, His noses twitched, picking up unfamiliar scents on the air. Yet the cub sat still and quiet, just as instructed. He snuggled up to the side of a large boulder, slightly comforted by the shade it provided.

Shaba had wandered too far from home this time.

He hadn’t a clue where he was anymore, and he was scared.

The cub’s already-weakened legs began to tremble as tears built up in his eyes; he kept walking, but he seemed to be doing in circles at this point, because he swore he’d been in this exact spot before…

Finally, Shaba sat down and began to cry, hanging his head.

Having been prepared to settle in for an afternoon nap as he awaited his mother's return. Kanti let out a squeak, ears perking at the sound of.. somebody crying?

He'd been told to stay put but..it could be someone scared and alone. Kanti weighed his options, noses scrunching as he stood up to follow the sound.

"Is somebody there?"

“Wait… where’s Diku?” he wondered aloud. “I thought I should’ve found her by now.”

He looked around. “Diku? You can come out! You win- I can’t find you!”

A bit concerned, Shaba lowered one ear. “Does she normally like ‘ta hide for a long time?” he asked the remaining sisters, raising an eyebrow.

The cubs looked at one another, none very sure of what to think.

"Spread out," Sarabi ordered, her expression becoming serious. "She couldn't have gone very far."

As the sisters split up, Dwala called out, "Diku!! Come out already, you furball! This isn't funny!"

A shriek came from the nearby den in the ground, unmistakable. It was Diku. Sarabi's fur stood on end.

"Diku!" Naanda cried out, rushing toward the den in a panic.

Diku was already rapidly backing out, pawing at her face in a frenzy while squalling in pain. When she turned, it revealed that she'd gotten an entire faceful of porcupine quills — So many that it was hard to see just what all was injured.
